Public Transportation SPEAKING
Content In this lesson you will learn to compare public transportation in your area with other places. Learning Outcomes Learn various words about The London Tube Express comparisons using more/less and -er Express interest using That sounds
1) Underground 2) Metro 3) Transportation 4) Lines 5) Tickets 11) Commuting 12) Stations 13) Gap 14) Railways 15) Public 6) Extensive 7) Network 8) Train system 9) Subway 10) The Tube 2
Speaking Match the words to the pictures. Describe the images to explain your answer. 1) Taxi 2) Bicycle 3) Station 4) Bus 5) Underground 3
Please note For giving simple comparisons that are greater than another, you can use more (adj.) than or the comparative (adj.)-er than Example The London Tube is one of the most extensive underground metro systems in the world. It is used by millions of commuters and serves over 270 stations. The London Tube is much larger than the Buenos Aires metro. The metro in Tokyo is much cleaner than Chicago. Public transportation in England is more convenient than in Italy 4
Please note To compare how something is smaller or not as much as something else, it s common to say less than Example The metro is less crowded in Sydney than it is in Beijing. The London Tube is less dangerous than the São Paulo Metro. 5
That sounds... That sounds... could be used to express how you perceive something that somebody says. Example A) The metro in Santiago is clean and cheap! B) That sounds great! My city doesn t have a metro. 6
Public Transportation Adjectives Expensive Dangerous Convenient Extensive Comfortable Affordable Fast Trustworthy Unreliable 7
Speaking Insert the correct adjective to make the sentence true about public transportation. 1) The London Tube is more expensive than the Shanghai metro. It s over double the cost! 2) Public transportation in the suburbs is than it is in the city. It s about half the price! 3) The subway is more than buses. They are easier to get around town. 4) The London Tube is less than the Seoul metro but perhaps it s because Seoul has more people. 5) Milan s public transportation is than Miami s. Miami doesn t even 8 have a subway!
Speaking Insert the correct adjective to make the sentence true about public transportation. 1) Melbourne s public transportation isn t very convenient. You still have to walk a lot. 2) Public transportation here is so that I don t use it. I just take taxis everywhere. Then I can t get robbed. 3) The metro in Prague isn t very. There are just three lines and a handful of stations. 4) Even though Rio de Janeiro is expensive the public transportation is pretty. 5) The public transportation in my town is very. It s always late so I just use my car. 9
Speaking Fill in the blanks using the correct word comfortable fast trustworthy extensive convenient The London Tube is a huge metro system! It s also quite good too. It s very and stops at hundreds of stations all over the city. I ll admit even though it s a bit pricey, it s the most way to travel the city. You don t need to take cabs or drive! It s usually and rarely breaks down so that s good. I highly recommend it if you need to get somewhere and you want a ride. That s if you can get a seat. It gets pretty crowded. 10
1. More than / adj-er than Used to make greater comparisons The metro in Washington DC is smaller than New York s metro 2. Less (adj) than Used to make fewer/smaller comparisons The metro in Venezuela is less reliable than in France You could also use That sounds... to express what you think about something That sounds great! I wish I lived somewhere with a subway 11
Speaking Compare the public transportation in your city with London Ex) Public transportation in Miami is cheaper than London. 1) 2) 3) 12
Speaking Make comparisons with two the transportation of two cities you ve visited using Less (adj.) than Ex) The buses in Cancun come less frequently than the buses in Auckland 1) 2) 3) 13
Speaking Ask a partner what transportation is like in his/her city. Use the adjectives 14
Writing Write two sentences using more than or less than on any topic Example: She is friendlier than her friends. 15
Writing Write two sentences using the public transportation adjectives Example: The bus in Ecuador is always very crowded! 16
Speaking Talk with a partner about public transportation in your city then make comparisons together. Example: Person A - Tell me about public transportation in your city. - Wow! That sounds awesome! My city is more inconvenient. We only have buses. Person B - We have a metro, buses, tram and bicycle lanes! -Bummer! I m sure it s cheaper than here though. 17
Speaking Look at the image. Create any 3 sentences comparing this metro system to another one
Writing Write a short text about how much you rely on your city s public transportation Ex) I live in a suburb of Miami and public transportation is basically non-existent. If you don t have a car, you re out of luck! There s a bus but it is not very reliable. The public transportation isn t very good and I m sure is better in other cities. 19
Speaking Make comparisons with your partner on other city topics Example: A) It s about 20 degrees here in winter. B) That sounds great! My city is usually much colder than your city. 20
Speaking Discuss the pros and cons of having a car instead of using public transportation Pro You don t have to wait for buses or the metro. Con You have to pay for parking almost everywhere. 21
