1 1 Background Description The layout is based on the CB&Q mainline at Buda Illinois 1.1 What went on at Buda Buda was at the top of a 3 mile.8 percent grade which also had an S curve in it. This was the ruling grade on the Main Line (Aurora to Galesburg) and there for the reason for the westward siding (a place to double to if needed) One problem with the westward siding was it was not straight. It had a small curve near the west end to get by the supports for one of the overhead bridges. This small curve brought it nearer Main 1. Not a problem unless a train on Main 1 had a wide load and often this was the case the loads coming out of Cat in Montgomery (on an Eola Pickup) or a car had to be set out after getting stopped by the Detector. Often the Dispatcher had to tell the train setting out the car to shove it back far enough to clear that location so wide loads would pass. This was also one of the only locations on the Main Line where you could get water. Yes I know diesels did not have to stop for water like steam engines but once in a while it had to be done and in order to get the water you had to cut the power off and back thru the westward siding down to the depot and get the hose out the window of the Depot. This depot was one of the remodelled wooden depots where the eaves were cut back and all the gingerbread covered up or taken off and stuccoed 1.2 Layout The layout is a representation of the area from just up from the junction with the branch line to Elmwood to the bridge over the main line on the Burlington side of the depot. The track plan is based on the early 60 s, with a small yard on the Elmwood branch. The connection from the relief road to the main line on the Burlington side of the depot, which was lifted between 1960 & 1965, has been included. The two signal bridges in town on either side of the Buda station were 3 track. They were changed to 2 track bridges in 1966, and the west bridge moved closer to the station. There were two other signal bridges prior to 1966 near the outer ends of the passing tracks on both ends of town, and they were 2 track ( these are not modelled.). View of the area modeled. A model of Buda Feed & Seed, which was constructed (on the left) some time in the 60s, has been included on the layout. The dairy, which is on the far side of the Elmwood branch has been modeled as set of low relief building. The concrete bridge at the Burlington end of the layout is relatively new. A wooden over-bridge was there in mid 1980 s. i

2 The depot, which was demolished in 2007 has been scratch-built. The model is based on the photographs that are available on the web (by Manon) and the detailed floor plan which was obtained through the CBQ yahoo group.. Buda is privately owned (by a member of the NMRA BR), and will be exhibited under the banner of Colchester & District Model Railway Club. 2 Layout Details 2.1 Scale & Gauge Prototype : CB&Q / BN / BNSF prototype. 3 2.3 Size and Access The overall dimensions of Buda layout is 3.5m * 2.5m. The main viewing area is from the front and the left hand side and is shown in blue. Access is required to the rear of the layout. The layout was designed to fit into 1 estate car, which has 1m between the wheel arches. It is made up of 6 rectangular boards of 980* 500mm and 4 trapezoidal where the long edge is 980mm and having a depth of 380mm. This means that the layout has very generous curves. Ideally, access to the operating well is from the rear of the layout.

4 2.4 Requirements 240VAC 3 amp including lighting. 1 small table 2 chairs. 3 Details (Eurotrack 2012). 4 Operation Loco control is by Lenz DCC and the point control uses Conrad point motors with an AC supply. There is an 8 road fiddle yard which can feed the double track main line, the line behind the depot serving what little industry there was and the branch line to Elmwood. Up to the 60s there was a coal mine 9 miles further down the branch-line. For intensive operation, and to interact with the public a minimum of two operators are required at any one time (i.e a second car load of operators)..

5 5 Costs Insurance value : 5000 Only the buildings have been scratch-built. Buda is designed to be transportable in 1 car with a minimum of 2 operators 5.1 Small 1 day show For non- intensive operation the cost would be based on 1 car with 2 operators, 5.2 Larger shows For a larger show where it is desirable to have a high intensity of operation and for 2 day shows then the cost would be based on 2 cars and 3-4 operators.
