3 I. Description of Equipment: An Autotransformer type pump control panel for one (1) pump-motor. Selectric, Inc manufactures these control panels. This control panel uses a UL Type 3R enclosure, which contains: 1. Main circuit breaker type pump-disconnect, with external operating handle. 2. Three (3) Magnetic contactors. 3. Motor starting Autotransformer. 4. Overload relay, with external reset pushbutton. 5. Selector switch (SS), HAND-OFF-AUTO. 6. Pushbutton (PB), START AND BYPASS. 7. Transition timer (SEQ). 8. Master control relay (MCR). 9. Control terminals, for connection to the Remote Control Devices (by others). II. Description of Operation: The panel controls power to the pump motor through the circuit breaker, three (3) magnetic contactors, the autotransformer, and the overload relay. The magnetic contactors are controlled by both the transition timer and the selector switch ( HAND-OFF-AUTO ). The selector switch determines: 1. HAND: Hand operation once PB has been pushed. 2. OFF: Motor off. 3. AUTO: Operation from the Remote Control Device (RCD). This Autotransformer type motor starter operates under a two- (2) step starting sequence. Each time the motor is started, the motor is initially connected through the Autotransformer, with contactors S and Y. Once the transition timer (SEQ) times out, the motor will be reconnected for full voltage operation with contactor M. Three (3) safety circuits are included. Upon the following faults, the respective circuit will stop pump motor operation. 1. Pump motor overload. 2. Circuit Breaker (CB). 3. Control Power Fusing. Last Revised
4 III. Installation Instructions: The control panel should be located so that it is protected from unnecessary exposure to adverse environments and mechanical damage. There should be adequate clearance to allow safe access for operation and maintenance. Panel mounting and the structure to which it is attached must be capable of rigidly sustaining all forces without deformation of the panel or the structure. Install conduit and wiring to: 1. Connect the line side of the Circuit Breaker to the 3-phase supply power. 2. Connect the pump motor to the load side of the Overload Relay. 3. Connect wiring for the remote control device to the respective control terminal points. Precautions should be taken to prevent metal chips from falling onto the electrical components (within the panel) when cutting holes for conduit and such. Remove all debris from the control panel when the mechanical installation is complete. IV. Controls and Indicators: A. Circuit Breaker: When this circuit breaker is in the OFF position, power is removed from the entire control panel except at the line side of the Circuit Breaker. B. Selector switch (SS), HAND-OFF-AUTO : 1. HAND Operation: When the SS is in this position and PB has been pressed, the pump motor will start and continue operating. 2. OFF: When the SS is in this position, the pump motor will be stopped. 3. AUTO Operation: When the SS is in this position, the pump motor will be stopped (and possibly started) in response to the Remote Control Device (RCD). C. Safety Circuits: 1. Motor Branch Circuit Protection: The Circuit Breaker provides branch circuit protection for the pump motor. 1. Pump Motor Overload Protection: When a motor overload condition is sensed, the overload relay will trip, and stop pump operation. Once this relay has cooled, it may be manually reset. 2. Control Fuses: Protect the control wiring from excessively high currents. Last Revised
5 V. Initial Start-Up: Once the control panel is mounted and the supply power, motor, and control connections are complete, the panel is ready for testing. Confirm correct rotation of the pump: Bump the motor by setting the selector switch (SS) briefly to HAND, pressing the start pushbutton (PB) and then return SS to OFF. Allow motor operation for a brief moment (one-second maximum), just long enough to observe the direction of pump rotation. Then return the SS to the OFF position. If the pump s rotation direction is incorrect, turn off the supply power and (at the overload relay) exchange any two (2), of the three (3) power leads to the pump motor. Now listen to the motor as it is started. The motor should accelerate for about three (3) seconds, then be reconnected to the Run mode. The transition timer may be set for less than three (3) seconds ONLY if the motor comes to a constant speed before three (3) seconds have elapsed. VI. Normal Operation: A. Set the Main Circuit Breaker to ON. B. Ensure fuses (F1 F2) are good. C. Selector switch (SS), HAND-OFF-AUTO : 1. HAND Operation: When the SS is in this position and PB has been pressed, the pump motor will start and continue operating. 2. OFF: When the SS is in this position, the pump motor will be stopped. 3. AUTO Operation: When SS is in this position, the pump motor will be stopped (and possibly started) in response to the Remote Control Device (RCD). NOTE: Many applications use a Low Pressure Switch (LPS). The Pump should then be started in HAND and allowed to operate for a short time. Once the water system is pressurized (closing LPS), the PB is held down while the SS is switched to AUTO. Operation in AUTO will allow pump shutdown due to Low System Pressure. Last Revised
6 VII. Fault Protection: A. The Circuit Breaker: This device provides motor branch circuit protection for the pump motor. Should this circuit breaker trip, determine and correct the fault before reapplying power to the system. The circuit breaker may be reset, by setting the handle past OFF and then back to ON. B. Motor Overload: If the overload relay trips, determine and correct the reason for the overload or overheating before resetting the relay. Once the motor and overload relay have cooled, the overload relay may be reset by pressing the panel mounted reset pushbutton. C. Control Circuit Fuses: These devices provide high current protection for the control circuit wiring. Replacement fuses must be of the same type and capacity. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. VIII.
