3 First Edition Y & F Body Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacement for Bosch Hot Wire Installation Instructions for the HPX Thin Film RTD MAF Sensor BATTERY 1 ) IMPORTANT Disconnect the battery ECM (Engine Control Module) 2 ) Expose the vehicle ECM. See Figure 1. In the case of the 1985 thru 1989 Y Body Corvette the ECM is located behind the dash on the passenger side of the vehicle. Access is gained by first dropping the passenger side kick panel. Three 7mm screws will usually do it. Then get on your back with your head looking up under the dash and using a 10mm nut driver remove the 2 bolts that hold the ECM in place. Carefully drop down the ECM. Consult your Helm s workshop manual. 3 ) Referring to Illustration 1, remove the MemCal Pack cover (use a ¼ nut driver). 4 ) Remove the Mem-Cal Pack. See Illustration 2. 5 ) Unplug both vehicle harness connectors from the ECM. 1 2 Access Cover Mem-Cal illustration 1 ECM connectors illustration 2 Mem-Cal Removal Using two fingers, push both retaining clips back away from the Mem-Cal. At the same time, grasp it at both ends and lift it up out of the socket. Do not remove the cover of the Mem-Cal. Use of unapproved Mem-Cal removal methods may cause damage to the Mem-Cal or socket. 2 blowerworks Fall / Winter 2009 Online at blowerworks.net
5 First Edition Y & F Body Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacement for Bosch Hot Wire Installation Instructions for the HPX Thin Film RTD MAF Sensor / ECM / cont d 6 ) Remove the big colored plastic wire retainer for the appropriate row of pins on each connector. 7 ) At the ECM the MAF signal wire terminal (dark green) must be pushed out of the ECM B12 and relocated to the open D8. See Footnote #1. 8 ) On the ECM connector there is an opening above each wire/terminal. By inserting a flattened paper clip (take a large style paper clip and hammer one end flat see Figures 2A & 2B) into the opening, the terminal can be unlocked and removed by gently pulling on the wire. 6 Y & F Body Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacement for Bosch Hot Wire First Edition Installation Instructions for the HPX Thin Film RTD MAF Sensor / ECM / cont d You insert the paper clip (pin extraction tool) into the opening above the appropriate pin/wire from the ECM side of the connector as shown in Figure 3. To unlock the pin first push the wire forward, then insert the tool (pushing pin tab to side) to unlock the pin. Gently pull the wire and terminal out from the back side of the connector. The wire and pin will EASILY come out unless you have not released the lock tab properly. 9 ) The paper clip in this picture has been flattened down on the end. Insert the paper clip and pull out the wire and terminal from B12. Insert the terminal into the new location D8. See Figure 4 and Illustrations 4, 5 & 6. This terminal has been sitting for 20 years with no mating pin and may have some corrosion. 12 ) Refer back to Figure 1 and reconnect both connectors to the ECM. 13 ) Install the new E-Prom (vehicle will not run w/o the new E-prom which reconfigures the input signal from B12 to D8. See Illustration 3. Do not reinstall the ECM until after all testing is complete. 10 Y & F Body Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacement for Bosch Hot Wire First Edition Engine Compartment Splicing Wires Overview The Bosch MAF sensor utilizes 5 wires. The old Bosch sensor is a hot wire style sensor and the fifth wire is used for cleaning the sensor. You will use 4 wires and cap the fifth wire. We supply the new HPX sensor with a 36 pigtail wires and connector. You will cut off the Bosch connector in a stagger cut fashion starting about 6 from the connector and then cutting each wire 3 from the last cut. This method allows for a beautiful harness with no bulges from stacked up splices. 1 ) Peel back the black tape that covers the wires to the GM Bosch MAF sensor connector. Start at about 6 from the connector and cut the purple wire from position E on the connector. 2 ) Next move on up the GM harness about 3 and cut the Dark Blue wire from position D. This wire will not be used. You will slip some shrink tube over it to insulate. 3 ) Move on up the harness another 3 and cut the Dark Green wire from position C. 4 ) Move another 3 and cut the Black wire from position B. 5 ) Finally move another 3 or 4 and cut the Black with White tracer from position A. Now you can remove the Bosch connector with its pigtails from the vehicle. Save it. 8 blowerworks Fall / Winter 2009 Online at blowerworks.net

Cut the remaining wires at assorted lengths to match their corresponding wires as shown in Illustration 7. Solder splice the wires as shown and be sure to slip the shrink tube on FIRST. Cover the wires with the supplied split loom. Install the new MAF sensor (sensor is directional so be sure to observe the airflow arrow), connect to harness, hook up battery and test drive. 13 First Edition Y & F Body Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacement for Bosch Hot Wire Footnotes 1 ) Alternately we have supplied you with a new pin and pigtail wire. You can insert this pin into D8 and then solder splice the green wire from B12 (cut the wire at least 6 back so you have plenty of wire to work with). Or you can practice on this pin first before removing B12 if you are nervous about damaging the pin. 2 ) Should you set a Code 34 it is most likely a result of an open connector, or a sensor signal short to ground, or a bad MAF power relay or finally a bad fuel pump relay, which would leave the new MAF sensor un-powered. The minimum allowable airflow is set for 4 gm/sec (which is really set internally set as 2 in internal 2 gm/sec units). The minimum setting in the MAF table 1 is 7.05 gm/sec or 3.5 in the internal 2 gm/sec units. Code 34 is set based on the MAF signal A/D counts after they are multiplied by 7 and then comparing with a value of 49. It is not dependent on the gm/sec scaling, only the dc voltage after A/D conversion. To set Code 34 you must have very low voltage on the MAF signal pin to the ECM (now D8). Low means approximately 0 -> 0.13 volts dc. Normal operation you should be seeing about 0.7 volts dc from the sensor at idle. Check with a volt-meter if in doubt. 3 ) Referring to the enclosed wiring diagrams you can eliminate the MAF Burn Off Relay and the MAF Power Relay by splicing the purple wire 993 (terminal E) to the orange wire 340 (terminal C).
