Ons het Fanie du Preez se nuwe museum besoek, en wat n ervaring was dit nie, daarna na Louis Coetzer se versameling waar ons weereens in ekstase oor was, en ons het die hoofmaal by Pierre en Lydia geniet en baie lekker gekuier! Vriendelike ou kar groete, Theo THE ARGYLL FACTORY Inspired by a trip to the world s most modern motor car plant in America, Alexander Goven, who supervised the first Argyll car built in 1898, decided to build something better is the West of Scotland. He was determined that his factory would rival Clydesides world famous railway locomotive and shipbuilding works. The 24 acres of land and buildings at Alexandria cost in Today s restoration of the remaining structure has cost almost 6 million. The statue of a woman, above the entrance to the building (cover photo), with flowing drapes, standing on the bonnet of a car, was typical of the factory s lavish detail and design. Behind the building were the production facilities. These included a 4.5 acre machine shop, a powerhouse, forge, plus the erecting, coachbuilding, painting and upholstery departments. As well as all the offices, the building also housed a lecture theatre and dining rooms, plus facilities for workers. The company went into liquidations soon after Govan s death in Although the Argyll model range had steadily grown, the company s production methods did not allow it to manufacture cars in numbers that provided a sufficient return on investment.

4 Page 4 SAVVA Technical Tip volt petrol cut-off valves Gaslamp We don t often hear about collector cars being stolen however it has happened. Recently, I fitted a 12 volt petrol cut-off valve to a car and thought it may be worth mentioning that such things are available. Originally they were designed to be part of elaborate security systems and were fitted in-line on the petrol pipe from the petrol tank to the carburettor. They operate on 12 volt and require 12 volts to open them to allow the petrol to flow and no voltage means no petrol flows. To protect our collector cars they can be operated by a hidden switch under the dash or where ever you wish it to be. They can also be used for other purposes. For example, I recently fitted one to the tank of a little BMW Isetta. These cunning little vehicles had a mechanical tap which fed the carburettor by gravity. However, after 50 years these mechanical taps tended to corrode and leak and are extremely difficult to replace or repair. In this case, the solution was to replace the original tap with one of these electrically operated devices. Nobody in their right minds would think of stealing an Isetta so security wasn t an issue. To operate, I simply connected it to the wire from the ignition switch going to the coil. When the ignition is switched on the valve opens and the petrol flows, when the ignition is switched off no petrol. The car security shops keep them in stock and they cost about R150 each. Not much to pay for excellent security.

This is the largest single event held annually in the Goldfields. Our motor club has grown exceptionally and the motor show has gained invaluable exposure nationwide. We have between 300 to 400 cars on show yearly which ranges between the years 1904 to present. Our aim for this year is to have 600 cars on show. Our show will present vintage-, classic-, projects in progress, rods, muscle-, new cars and many more. Our guests for the day are the DATSUN SSS CLUB R.S.A who will be hosting their NATIONAL DATSUN DAY. There will be more that 150 Datsun vehicles at the show. It promises to be an exciting day with entertainment for the entire family. There will be live entertainment, kid s entertainment, beer tent, flea market, food stalls and many more. The event will take place on Saturday 6 OCTOBER 2018 at the Welkom Technical High School in Volks Road Welkom. 9 Volume 2 Page 9 Under the BONNET 1965 Scamp This little car is not an invalid carriage, it was developed by Scottish Aviation, with finance from the Electricity Council. It was designed when the small car was at the height of popularity and was meant for shoppers. It has a top speed of 35 mph and a 20 mile range between charge. About 12 were made and Stirling Moss demonstrated it with great success. Unfortunately the batteries were insufficiently long lasting and the Electricity Council insisted it went for tests by the Motor Industry Research Association tests it would certainly fail. The Scamp could not match the conventional commuter car, the suspension collapsed under testing and the car was claimed unroadworthy and unsuitable for showrooms. It was withdrawn from development and the project was abandoned. 11 Volume 2 Page 11 EXTREMELY RARE CARS : Part 9 ARGYLL a story of supreme success and dismal failure ( ) One of the "three As" of Scottish motor manufacturing (Argyll, Albion and Arrol-Johnston) Argyll grew into a business which was second only to Ford of Detroit in terms of production. But the story of the Argyll is not a straightforward success story. It is the story of supreme success and dismal failure. It was while Alex Govan was working as a foreman with the Eadie Manufacturing Company (a bicycle manufacturer which more recently produced the Ariel motor cycles) that he developed his fascination for cars. The firm had taken delivery of several light cars for experimental purposes and Govan spent much of his time working on them. He determined that he was going to set up in the Scottish car business. Alex Govan returned to his native Glasgow and started selling, servicing and, latterly, assembling French cars - De Dions, Renaults and Darracqs. However, Govan had plans for his own light car and started to look around for backers. Mr W A Smith, who was already familiar with Govan's technical ability, came forward and set up the Hozier Engineering Co Ltd with 15,000 capital in the very factory in Hozier Street, Glasgow in which Govan had started his bicycle career. He and his brotherin-law, John Worton, had designed the Worvan, a bicycle produced by the Scottish Manufacturing Company which at that time owned the factory. Production of the Argyll began in The first production model was described in Scottish motoring magazine "The Motor World" of June It was a two-and-threequarters horsepower voiturette with a De Dion engine. The whole design bore a strong resemblance to the current Renaults (which Govan had so recently been assembling). The chassis was made of tubular steel shaped on the old bicycle formers in the factory. About 90 such models were produced at the rate of around six per week before the new MMC engine became available. Both engines were coupled to Govan's own threespeed gearbox. In a five-day reliability trial run by the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (now the RAC) in 1901, the Argyll was the only car to finish without penalty. From this point on, Argyll's competition successes increased until they truly devastated the opposition in 1903 and In 1905 two Argylls entered the Tourist Trophy races in the Isle of Man and one finished eighth with another Scottish car, the Arrol-Johnston, winning. The next year Argylls were back with George of George and Jobling, the Newcastle Argyll dealers, driving to second place only to be disqualified for loosing his ballast (the weight equivalent to a full complement of passengers)! For 1902, the Simms 8 hp engine was offered with magneto ignition. An alternative 100 x 130 MMC engine, also of 8 hp was offered, this engine being capable of an alarming 1,500 rpm! In 1903, a 12/14 hp three-cylinder Argyll-engined car was on the market and selling well. Factory output at this time was about seven cars per week. Late 1903 saw the Introduction of 10, 12 and 16 hp models. Thus the range was built up Argyll 8HP Rear-entrance tonneau

12 Page 12 Gaslamp By 1904, the Hozier Street factory was working nightshifts to produce between 20 and 25 cars per week. Despite this large output demand exceeded supply and the company claimed to have 100,000 worth of orders outstanding. Obviously larger premises must be found. Now named Argyll Motors Ltd, the company moved to Bridgeton, Glasgow to a grand, purpose-built factory in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire (right). It had its own railway line. However, the new factory was never used to capacity, and the company began to decline after Govan s death in It went into liquidation in Nota: Dis tragies om hierdie indrukwekkende Art Nouveau-gebou te sien agteruit gaan. The 12/14 was widely sold as a taxi even being exported to New York. Fourwheel brakes designed by J.M. Rubury of Argyll and patented on 18 March 1910 were available Front of a 1908 Argyll from 1911 on, and in 1912 the single Sleeve valve engine designed by company director Baillie P. Burt and J. P. McCollum began production; the entire range featured Burt-McCollum engines by Cutaway drawings of the Burt-McCollum single sleeve valve engine, originally developed by Archie Niven. Later transferred to Continental Motors in Detroit when they bought the rights. Argyll changed hands in 1914 and the Alexandria factory was sold to the Royal Navy for torpedo production. Car production was resumed on a small scale in the original Bridgeton works under the control of John Brimlow who had previously run the repair department. The first product from the new company was a revival of the pre-war 15 9 hp model, now with electric starter but few were sold. In 1922 it was joined by a 1½-litre sleeve valve model and in 1926 by the 12/40 sports. The company made a final appearance at the London Motor Show (below) in 1927 and the last cars were probably made in 1928 though still advertised until Argyll closed in Argyll 15/30 hp - HENNIE VAN DER WALT

17 Volume 2 Page 17 N BLIK OP DIE OVS VETERAANMOTORKLUB: Met ou motorklubs wat die afgelope tyd taan, stagneer en selfs van die radar skerm verdwyn, kyk ons na wat met ons klub gebeur. Die Bestuur het op n stadium besluit om by tye fondse in lede terug te ploeg om sodoende betrokkenheid en entoesiasme aan te wakker asook om uit te reik na ons plattelandse lede wat nie altyd funksies kan bywoon nie. Dit het sover n positiewe uitwerking gehad. Ons doelstelling bly die behoud en restourasie van motors om die beweging uit te bou en ook aan die gang te hou. Ons kyk na wat tans in die klub gebeur. Ons jaarprogram weerspieel ons aktiwiteite en ons hou daarby. Wat die restourasie van motors betref, kyk ons na wat tans in ons klub gebeur: Verskye motors is tans in aanbou en/of restourasie, onder andere, Mike Spencer se Morris 8 wat in sy finale stadium van restourasie is. Hennie van der Walt is besig met n MG TC en n Armstrong Siddeley is nou kort aangeskaf en wag sy beurt af. Fanie van Rensburg is stil stil besig met n 1932 Ford bakkie. Jimmy Macdonald is besig met sy 1933 Plymouth en het ook met n DKW nou kort begin. Johan Ackerman is besig met sy 1934 Plymouth. In die platteland is Oom Flip Henning besig met sy Ford Model A Roadster en met sy Model A bakkie. Sy Studebaker Starliner is reeds geverf. Gerrit Jacobs se 1958 Plymouth is ook al vêr gevorder. Eeste lae verf is besig om droog te word. Laat weet van ander projekte wat in wording is asseblief. Ons kyk ook na voltooide restourasies soos Bill James se Studebaker en Fanie du Preez se Mercedese. Daar is ook van tyd tot tyd lede wat gerestoureerde motors aanskaf. Die aanwins was die afgelope jaar of twee groter as die verliese. Ons nuusbrief is die spreekbuis van die klub wat goeie kwaliteit inligting aan lede deurgee. Ons ontvang groot lof oor die interresante artikels oor motors waarvan baie van ons nie eens van geweet het nie. Ons benodig egter meer deelname vernaam van klublede waarvan ons selde hoor. Bydraes tot die nuusbrief wat met ander lede gedeel kan word kan net lei tot n beter samehorigheid tussen lede. Uit bovermelde kan u aflei dat ons klub redelik aktief is en dat daar vooruitgang is. Bloemfontein en omgewing het egter nog baie ou motor entoesiaste, met of sonder n ou motor. Dit is elkeen van ons se plig om die klub te promoveer om sodoende nuwe lede te werf wat die voortbestaan van die klub kan waarborg. Ons motorskou in Augustus is op hande. Ons vra elke lid se ondersteuning en om ook die klub aktiwiteite in die toekoms by te woon en te ondersteun. Hoop om julle almal daar te sien. Oumotor Groete. Johan Ackerman

19 Volume 2 Page 19 The DJ rally 2018 started in misty weather from Hillcrest on 9 March Darker clouds hung over the Natal motorcycling fraternity as one of their well known members, Stuart Anderson was unfortunately run over by a lorry while taking his 1918 Harley Davidson for a pre DJ test run. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family and friends on this terrible loss. 82 riders and their machines set off with the threat of a cold and wet run. Rain gear was put on with some ingenious ideas for keeping water out of the electrics. From carefully manufactured, tight fitting plastic covers to good old duct tape and checkers packets over the mags were the order of the day. After my break down last year I could not ride the 1928 Sunbeam as we have still not fixed the gearbox but was fortunate to be able to use Mike Ward s 1935 Velocette 350 MAC. It is amazing the development in 7 years. The Velo has foot shift gears as opposed to hand, 4 gears not 3, a mechanical self circulating lubrication system not spy glass, pump and displace onto road and a far more comfortable ride. I was also very honoured to be asked to join Team Velo which won the team prize, consisting of Mike Ward (winner 2004), Alan Cunninghame (winner 2014) and myself. After the initial weather scare the weather gods were kind to us and we enjoyed 1935 Velocette 350 MAC a clear run to the overnight stop in Newcastle. A new route from Camperdown to Pietermaritzburg created mayhem with a good few riders (including me) heading on the usual route. Rule number 1 Read the route schedule. This new section through Thornville is so much easier (no speed bumps) than the Comrades route via Ashburton and the infamous Polly Shorts. Speed bumps are hell on old machines and riders with gammy knees. The lunch stop in Estcourt at the Round Table clubhouse was a delicious cold variety of Eskort products and very good salads. Thank you again to Eskort for their continued support. Escourt to Ladysmith is always a tricky section with very few visable milestones as well as stray cattle and pedestrians. Ladysmith to Newcatle is well marked with regular (0.2 km boards) but has a number of heavy trucks competing for a small piece of tar. Electronic loggers meant that we had results within a few minutes of completing the day. Keegan Ward and Geoff Johnson in full wet weather gear Day 2 took us up Joubert s pass via Memel, Vrede and on to Standerton, again preferable to the usual route via Volksrust. This is a lovely quiet road with fields of cosmos adding to the beauty of the countryside. 10 km outside Newcatle I nearly lost my clocks as they bounced off my rally box but luckily managed to catch them mid air and keep going. With clocks in my left hand and throttle in my right hand I was restricted to only using my master clock and concentrating properly for nearly 60 km. I got to the fuel stop in Vrede with my throttle hand in spasm but having rallied better than any section on day 1. Road works on the road from Standerton to Greylingstad meant irregular milestones again as well as competing with heavy trucks. Only having 2 wheels means that when a 22 wheeler comes alongside you forget about the next clue and concentrating on staying upright even if it means a trip onto the dirt. Lunch in Heidelberg was again sponsored by Eskort at their factory, this time delicious pork steaks. After lunch the final section to the finish at the Classic Motorcycle Club in Germiston was a fast route with a lot of open section along the Gauteng freeways. Again results were available almost immediately. This year the gremlins experienced with the loggers were almost non- existent. Congratulations to Leon Stander and his team of scorers on a very professionally scored event. 23 different motorcycle brands were entered with the most being BSA (19), Sunbeam (13) and Velocette (10). Other interesting makes were Motosacoche, NSU, Humber ( 1909), Levis, Chater Lea, OK Supreme and Zenith. Of the original 82 starters there were 72 finishers, an astounding finishing rate considering the newest bike is now 82 years old winner,gavin Walton was once again the worthy winner and in a class of his own with 256 penalties, with his brother Kevin second (460) and Martin Davis third (482). 20 Page 20 Gaslamp Considering there were 70 controls over the 2 days these are remarkable results. I ended 24 th on 1605 penalties proving that rallying only once a year and appreciating the countryside does not allow you to rally well, nor missing controls by not reading the route schedule. Congratulating Gavin afterwards I asked him for some tips. His reply you need to concentrate more. He added that he had heard me commenting on the cosmos and the crops I had seen and suggested that I was not concentrating hard enough and that I am distracted by the looking around so much. Instead of looking at the cosmos look for milestones and clues was the sage advice from a master rallyist who has also won Fairest Cape, Magnum (motorcycles)and Natal Classic in the last year. Larina McGreggor had to step in as Clerk of the Course in late January and did a sterling job in such a short time. Thanks to her and her team for all their efforts to make the DJ the premier motorcycle rally in SA. Different rally boxes on the bikes have interested me.
