7 MILKING STAGES The milking cycle is divided into four phases that usually take place over an interval of one second: PHASE A VACUUM INCREASING PHASE B MILKING is an intermediate stage in which the liner begins to open up as a result of the vacuum created between the liner and the shell. is the phase in which the liner is fully opened, the teat, which is subject to the action of the vacuum. 19 TEAT CUP SHELL The teat cup shell supports the liner and performs an essential function regarding both the efficacy of vacuum shut-off during attachment and the performance of a correct pulsation cycle. Between the liner and the shell, there is a space called the pulsation chamber. The pulsator alternatively connects the pulsation chamber to a vacuum or to air, thereby determining the succession of massage and milking phases. Each type of liner must match a specific shell in terms of shape, inner and outer diameter, volume, weight and length. The length of the shell should be able to provide the liner with tension equal to the tension for which the liner has been designed.
