3 (Consolidated up to 213/2017) ALBERTA REGULATION 17/2013 Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act CATHODIC PROTECTION TECHNICIAN OCCUPATION REGULATION Definitions 1 In this Regulation, (a) cathodic protection system means a system that reduces the corrosion of a metal surface by making the metal surface into the cathode of an electrochemical cell; (b) external electrical circuit means the components of an impressed current cathodic protection system that are down line of the rectifier; (c) galvanic anode cathodic protection system means a cathodic protection system in which a metal provides cathodic protection to another metal that is more noble, when the metals are electrically coupled in an electrolyte; (d) impressed current cathodic protection system means a cathodic protection system in which a direct current is supplied by a power source; (e) installed means a state of being physically connected to a power source; (f) occupation means the occupation of cathodic protection technician that is designated as a designated occupation pursuant to the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act; (g) rectifier means the component of an impressed current cathodic protection system that starts with the input terminal of the internal breaker and includes all wiring, connections and components up to and including the output terminals, and the enclosure. Constitution of the occupation 2(1) The undertakings that constitute the occupation are (a) installing, commissioning, monitoring, evaluating, maintaining, repairing and decommissioning the external
4 CATHODIC PROTECTION TECHNICIAN Section 3 OCCUPATION REGULATION AR 17/2013 electrical circuit portion of an impressed current cathodic protection system, (b) installing, commissioning, monitoring, evaluating, maintaining, repairing and decommissioning a galvanic anode cathodic protection system, and (c) maintaining and repairing a rectifier that is not installed. (2) For greater certainty, the maintenance and repair of a rectifier that is installed are matters that do not constitute undertakings that are within the occupation. Tasks, activities and functions 3(1) When practising or otherwise carrying out the work in the cathodic protection technician occupation level one, the following tasks, activities and functions come within that level of the occupation: (a) preparing for planned cathodic protection projects; (b) complying with all applicable regulations, codes and standards; (c) understanding the use and operation of testing equipment; (d) performing basic troubleshooting on cathodic protection systems; (e) conducting function tests; (f) gathering data; (g) preparing reports and records; (h) troubleshooting and replacing components of a rectifier that is not installed. (2) When practising or otherwise carrying out the work in the cathodic protection technician occupation level two, the following tasks, activities and functions come within that level of the occupation: (a) the tasks, activities and functions within cathodic protection technician level one, as set out in subsection (1); (b) overall responsibility for planning and completing cathodic protection projects; (c) ensuring safe practices and procedures; 2
5 CATHODIC PROTECTION TECHNICIAN Section 3 OCCUPATION REGULATION AR 17/2013 (d) conducting, verifying and evaluating the accuracy of test results; (e) preparing assignments and supervising a crew in cathodic protection system work; (f) managing inspection reports and log books; (g) performing advanced troubleshooting on cathodic protection systems and components; (h) educating stakeholders regarding cathodic protection systems; (i) co-ordinating the work of qualified tradespersons; (j) preparing and submitting cathodic protection system project estimates and bids; (k) providing assistance in the design and installation of cathodic protection systems; (l) performing commissioning and decommissioning checks. 4 Repealed AR 213/2017 s2. 3
