3 Hints for operation The EDER Capstan winch ESW500 has to be fastened by a belt which is feeded through the fastening eye together with the appropriate accessories (at least 3000 dan) at a fixed object (eg tree). The object to be drawn is to be fastend to a rope of any length. While the engine is running, the rope is to be feeded at least 3 times around the pulley. While the throttle is briefly drawn, the rope is ducted through the rope clamp and over the guiding roller (See also Figure in the spare parts list). It is important to make sure that the rope between the capstan and the guiding roller is always kept in tension. Otherwise it could be rolled up on the capstan and screwed up. Now the haulage can be started. For this the operator positions himself in an angle of 90 degrees to the tensile direction with a sufficient safety margin to the side of the Capstan winch and pulls the rope with not to much effort. The effort should only be so strong that the throttle arm is pulled so far until the desired speed is reached. If the rope slips on the capstan one or two more wraps around the capstan may be required. Hint: The pulling force of the capstan will not increase by particularly strong pull. When lifting suspended loads or when dragging objects on downhill terrain, there is no danger that the load may slip back as the rope at the zero position of the throttle arm is safely kept by the rope clamp. Nevertheless, the presence of persons under suspended or sloping loads is prohibited and must be avoided. EDER Capstan Winch ESW500,

4 As an optional accessory to the EDER capstan winch, a tree fixing plate is available, by which the device can be fixed to a tree with a strap. In this case, the winch is positionned in an upright position. So to pull a load into horizontal direction a deviation roller is required, which has to be arranged as shown in the following picture. Increasing the pulling force The EDER capstan winch should always be fixed above the fixing point at the load. So it could be avoided that the load pushes itself into the duff. Loads with more than 500 kg and less than 1000 kg can be pulled via a deflection roller. The roller has to be arranged in the rope way as shown in the following picture EDER Capstan Winch ESW500,

5 Safety instructions The capstan winch must only operated by people who are familiar with the handling of capstan winches and making of safe cable knots. The fail-safe condition of the device has always to tested before starting the work. This is especially true for the tightness of the nuts and bolts. The device must not be used if any damage at the device and / or at the fixing media are being detected. The pull rope must accord to the requirements mentioned in the technical data (see above) and must not have any damage. For maintenance and adjusting only dedicated tools have to be used. The device must not be operated in potentially explosive atmospheres or confined spaces with no air exchange. Protective or safety attachments must not made unoperative. The presence of persons under suspended or sloping loads as well as in the rope angle is forbidden. The rope must not be fixed on sharpe-edged fixing points. The breaking of a loaded rope may be a very heavy danger. The operator must wear body protective equipment particularly for eyes and face, helmet, protecting gloves and safety shoes. Before starting to work obstacles in the working area are to be removed. Die Eder Spillwinde ist an einem geeigneten Gegenstand sicher zu befestigen. 6 The capstan winch has to be fastended securely on a suitable object. If the subject of mounting is a tree, it is important to make sure that it is not damaged. To attach the winch a broad belt or a tree protector should be used. The operator must have a complete view over the whole working area. Hints for maintenance The fail-safe condition of the device must be checked each time before starting the work. For replacement of defective parts only genuine spare parts of EDER Maschinenbau GmbH have to be used.
