5 A World Class Manufacturer Isuzu has had a good name in the diesel engine field for a long time and has built over 26 million diesels since its predecessor developed Japan's first air-cooled automotive diesel engine in The company's history is highly respected because of not only its length but also its abundant fruits in responding to ever-changing demands of the market as well as of society. With its technological edge, Isuzu has kept setting the pace for the industry in developing fuelefficient, low-emission and powerful diesels. As a result, Isuzu excelled over other companies in the introduction of a direct-injection system and turbocharger incorporated with an intercooler and electronically controlled common-rail high pressure fuel injection system. If it were not for their excellent reliability and durability, Isuzu diesels could not be used at the Japanese base for the national expedition program in Antarctica, nor could OEM-basis supply of automotive and industrial models to other companies have increased. 5 Recently, diesel engines are attracting attention globally for their fuel efficiency and durability. 8 8 The First Car Builders of Japan The First Passenger Car Produced in Japan Isuzu's history can be traced back to its earliest antecedent company, Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Ltd., which was established in In 1916, this company diversified into car making and in 1918 started a passenger vehicle production venture in a tie-up with the British automaker Wolseley Motor Ltd. In 1922, Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding & Engineering succeeded in localizing production of the Wolseley A9 - the first passenger car ever made in Japan. This achievement was followed in 1924 by the completion of the first Japanese-built Wolseley CP 1.5-ton payload truck qualified as an official military truck by the Japanese government. In 1927, Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding & Engineering ended its tie-up with Wolseley and began manufacturing the 100% localized vehicles of its own design. 9 The Origin of the Isuzu Vehicle In the same year that the "Sumida" appeared, the Car Department of Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding & Engineering was established as an independent company named Ishikawa Automotive Works Co., Ltd. In 1933, Ishikawa Automotive Works responded to growing demand for motor vehicles by launching the "Isuzu", a car named after the Isuzu River. The Roots of Isuzu Diesel In 1933, Ishikawa Automotive Works merged with DAT Automobile Manufacturing Inc. to establish a new company called Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. This company poured its energies into the development of diesel engines, a technology that had not yet been commercially established even in Europe and North America, and by 1936 the company had succeeded in developing two air-cooled diesel engine models. These early diesels were to serve as the foundation of all later generations of Isuzu diesel engines. 10 The Establishment of Isuzu Motors On April 9, 1937, Automobile Industries merged with Tokyo Gas & Electric Co. to establish Tokyo Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. Isuzu regards this date as the foundation day of the present Isuzu Motors Ltd. In 1941, Tokyo Automobile Industries obtained authorization as an exclusively approved company for diesel vehicle production and changed its name to Diesel Automobile Industry Co., Ltd. The company then played the core role in the development of diesel engines in Japan. After the end of World War II, the water-cooled DA engine series developed during the war years were equipped in trucks for civil use in the postwar reconstruction effort. As a result of the widespread use of these vehicles, Isuzu became solidified in the public mind as a top diesel engine manufacturer in Japan. In 1949, Diesel Automobile Industry underwent a final name change to become Isuzu Motors Ltd.
