1 Towing Information A Receiver Hitch bolts to the vehicle and has a square tube opening which receives a ball mount, cargo carrier, bike rack, or a host of other accessories. Receiver hitches are generally categorized into 5 classes, with each class having a different weight rating. GTW is the weight of the trailer fully loaded in its towing condition. GTW can be found by placing the fully loaded trailer on a vehicle scales. Tongue Weight (TW) is the weight exerted down on the hitch ball by the trailer coupler. In most cases it is about 10-15% of the GTW. TW can be found by using a household scale and a brick that is as thick as the scale set three feet apart. (see the figure below) Re-zero the scale after setting a length of pipe on each and resting a beam across the pipes. Method for Measuring Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) Method for Measuring Trailer Tongue Weight (TW) Multiply the reading on the scale by 3. Notes and Tips Match the tow vehicle and the trailer. For safety make sure your vehicle is capable of towing your loaded trailer. In no case should the GTW exceed the vehicle maximum towing capacity. Check your vehicle s owner s manual for towing capacity ratings and other special warnings or advice. Air springs, air shocks, and overload springs help the tow vehicles rear suspension support TW as well as the weight of passengers and luggage. They are especially helpful on soft sprung vehicles or those whose springs have settled. THEY ARE NOT SUBSTITUTES FOR WEIGHT DISTRIBUTING HITCHES, since they do not redistribute the load to the front axles of the vehicle or the rear axles of the trailer, therefore you do not gain the increased steering and braking control that you gain with the weight distributing hitch.
