9 Over 125 Years of Technology Innovation In 1892, H. Ward Leonard invented the electronic motor control also known as the Ward Leonard Drive System and launched the radical transformation of how electrical distribution systems operated. A graduate of M.I.T. and member of Thomas Edison s engineering staff, he is credited with over 100 patents, and founding the Ward Leonard Electric Company. The electronic motor control was a revolutionary success, and quickly adopted by the US Navy; used in passenger lifts for industrial mining; powered the first moving sidewalk at the Paris Exposition of 1900 and in subsequent elevator systems; was applied to railway locomotives during World War I, and used in ground-breaking anti-aircraft radar systems in World War II among many other applications.
