5 Service Classification of EM tyres There are four different commonly used standards: ISO: International Standard Organisation ETRTO: European Tyre and Organisation : Tire and Association JATMA: Japan Automobile Tyre Manufacturers Association Within these four categories the tread options for new tyres are divided into specific use requirements (indicated by a number). This classification is internationally recognised: C Compactor G E Earthmover L Loader Machine C1 less C = Compactor Compressor rollers E1 E2 E3 E4 E7 G1 G2 Ripped Traction Rock, normal tread Rock, deep tread Flotation Ribbed Traction E = Earthmover Transportation equipment Skips, articulated dump trucks Within these four categories a difference is made of the new tyre s corresponding tread s depending on specific operational use (marked by a digit). G3 G4 Rock, normal tread Rock, deep tread G = When choosing a tyre, soil quality and operating conditions must both be taken into account. The label S for smooth indicates a treadless surface. SI (SPEED INDEX) The speed index indicates the tyre s top speed when the load index and operational conditions are taken into account. Earthmover tyres are divided into four large core groups, which are distinguished by their nominal aspect ratios. Standard Tyre series The nominal aspect ratio is around 100. B H H = 90% B In order to choose the right tyre, the following criteria must be considered: The vehicle Current tyres Tyre load when vehicle is loaded and unloaded The site Soil condition, road surface and routing Nature and condition of loading and unloading points Operating conditions Length of journey (loaded out and unloaded return) Maximum number of trips per work shift Length of work shift and number of shifts per day Any difficulties How the equipment handles when using the tyres (e.g. adhesion problems) Tyre behaviour What signs of wear are visible? What are the main reasons for dismounting? Are there problems with the sidewalls or the tyre surface? Choosing the tyre Please bear in mind the following: The manufacturer s tyre recommendations The equipment s operating conditions at the site (load, speed, soil condition, etc.) 11
