At least 4.93 billion worth of contracts have been signed by officials of the United Arab Emirates to equip their armed forces with modern systems during the show. Over 105,000 visitors have been attending and 1,235 companies have been exhibiting. Therefore IDEX has increased all important areas. Contracts were awarded to national and international companies equally. The local company NIMR was contracted to supply 1,500 JAIS 4x4 vehicles and other types to the UAE Armed Forces. The Russian state-owned agency Rosoboronexport won a contract to supply the UAE with 5,000 anti-armour missiles worth several million Euro, but also the U.S. company Raytheon and the European company MBDA Systems each won a several million Euro contract to deliver missiles. The shown technologies came from all over the world and every single continent hat companies present. From assault rifles to communication, tanks, vehicles, missiles, fighter jets, robots, helicopters and even cyber defence and cyber security the world moved a little bit closer during the four days in Abu Dhabi, when the major defence companies showed their solutions for fighting off the bad guys. Since the region has not become safer within the last years, the UAE need these systems to keep their country a safe place to live. 2 2 Oryx multi purpose operations vehicle (df) An interesting showcase at IDEX was the Oryx that has been developed closely with the requirements made by British soldiers. First it was just a testbed for brakes, reliable components and such, then some soldiers said, if we add this and improve that, we could have a very reliable useful vehicle for certain missions. One of the core missions of the Oryx could be medical evacuation of an injured person at high speed in rough terrain. The loadbay behind the drivers seats was designed just to meet these requirements, but due to modular structure different seat and/or payload configurations could be set up as well. The Oryx Concept Multi Purpose Operations Vehicle (MPOV) has due to being a testbed for components before a low maintenance together with high durability and strength together with a very good off-road ability. Some of the specials are Teflon-lined suspension components, the tubular spaceframe occupant safety cell and a high torque turbo diesel engine. Length of the vehicle is 4 metre, width 2.2 metre, height 1.86 metre, ground clearance 368 mm with kerb weight 1,300 kg. Top speed is 150 km/h and maximum range 700 km. oryx@mswarmoured.com Siad Overcomer for challenging terrain (df) Siad Overcomer was the system shown by the companies Overcomer and Tornado GT on their booth at IDEX. Considering complience with a wide range of tasks, the predecessor of Siad Overcomer Hunta has already proven itself as a reliable vehicle for geologists or hunters as well as security agencies and special divisions. Siad Overcomer has very low pressure tires together with the design and tire characteristics this provides high maneuverability and buoyancy. According to the company such tires do not damage topsoil due to low ground pressure (0.15 kg/cm3). Flotation is carried out by the wheels and screw propeller rotation. Maximum speed is 70 km/h. Clearance is 660 mm, wheelbase 3,100 mm. The tank might carry 100 liter. Panthera at Minerva Special Purpose Vehicles (df) Minerva Special Purpose Vehicles (MSPV) showed a broad selection of their Panthera wheeled tactical vehicles. The Panthera range comprises vehicles from 4 tons to 23 tons gross vehicle weight with many different applications and modules to meet the needs in several missions. In this variety of vehicles the LPV-T and LPV-J offer long range off-road capability. The T2, J3 and T4 are suited to fast reaction and pursuit in border control situations or to urban in confined streets thanks to their compact design. The medium-sized Panthera such as the T6, N6 or F10 allow the safe transport of troops while the heavier vehicles, such as K10 or AL8, provide the higher levels of protection against kinetic and blast threats to allow mobility in higher risk areas. The armoured personnel carrier MSPV Panthera F9 (shown on the photo) has certified ballistic steel and glass, runflats, mine protection (STANAG ) and a ballistic protection level of up to B7/STANAG The vehicle has in the standard version 2+9 seats, but other seating layoutsand even an ambulance configuration with up to four stretchers are also available. Among other interior features are a front cabin roof hatch, side and rear facing gunports and an optional 360 ring mount with or without cupola.

3 3 120mm mobile mortar system AGRAB Mk2 (df) International Golden Group presented the new AGRAB Mk2 120mm mobile mortar system at IDEX, the newest initiative of the company, officials said. This system is an armoured utility vehicle featuring dedicated ammunition magazines for the storage of mortar bombs. The crew cabin is sufficiently protected against small arms fire, anti-tank mine detonations and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). The vehicle is fitted with a 120mm smoothborne mortar system with an integrated mortal management and control system featuring accurate navigation, auto laying, semi-automatic loading and autonomous deployment capabilities. In-action time is 30 seconds report ready to fire after stopping in Centre-Of-Arc (COA). Maximum continuous permissible speed is 90 km/h. With these capabilities AGRAB Mk2 is able to deploy rapidly and deliver fire power wherever needed. The empty mass of the system is 16 tons with a possible payload of 2 tons. Combat mass fully fueled is 18 tons with a total of 52 bombs. MRAP by Navistar Defense (df) Navistar Defense showed the MaxxPro LWB DXM variant of their MaxxPro Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle family. The DXM suspension allows off-road mobility along with increased troop capacity at a high protection level. The MaxxPro LWB DXM has the full range of ballistic IED and mine blast protection solutions. Seating is for up to 8 soldiers and a gunner. The vehicle is in service and battle tested. Due to the modular setup of this vehicle family various body styles and multiple compabible weapon systems are available to meet all the customer needs. Special operations training centre (df) Jordan showed the capabilities and facilities of their training ground the King Abdullah II Special Operations Training Center (KASOTC) at IDEX, promoting it as an example and possible training facility to their neighbour countries. We have to understand that it is called international terrorism, however we as special operations units all over the world are not yet international, was the preliminary of His Majesty King Abdullah II when building up the KA- SOTC. The bad guys always work together, have always been coordinating and have always been international. The good guys have never been. The 25 square kilometre site boasts over 200 million dollars worth of cutting-edge training facilities and support structures. KASOTC is a quite unique location with its fiber optic network serving as the nerve centre that connects the Range Operations Control (ROC) to the hundreds of cameras, microphones, target systems, battlefield effects and simulators through the numerous training structures. The KASOTC also has an Urban Area containing a wide range of urban and village facilities, in total 52, to simulate realistic neighbourhoods. Included are an embassy, residential areas, commercial and industrial facilities, governmental buildings, a public square, villas, apartment complexes, servants quarters, shops and much more that is always found in typical villages of the Middle East. The Urban Area therefore simulates a variety of typical urban environments, enabling live fire training, scoring and safety. In addition, the entire area is outfitted with concussion wave cannons, machine gin simulators, speakers, battlefield smell, smoke simulators and hundreds of day and nicht cameras and microphones to capture the training. Logging is there for up to 1,100 personnel with a full service dining facility, headquarters, classrooms and even entertainment areas with lounges and a cinema.

4 4 Unmanned demining with the MV-10 (df) Demining is one of the tasks where unmanned systems can provide a real advantage. DOK-ING presented at IDEX the MV- 10, that is designed for demining and other associated tasks. While the vast majority of demining machines in medium and heavy class include both a flail and a tiller, which are interchangeable, the MV-10 is the only robotic system so far with double tool, a front-positioned flail tool following a rear tiller. The MV-10 also has very good crosscountry performance. Its robust structure and low silhouette in combination with the kw engine enables the MV-10 to operate in steep slopes and overcome various obstacles up to 2 metres wide and 0.6 metre high and to pass through 0.8 metre deep water. This remote controlled system is easy to be operated by a single soldier from a safe distance of up to 1,500 metres. The operating speed in clearing mode is 0.1 to 0.8 km/h with a clearance depth of around 40 cm. Military robots at Endeavor Robotics (df) With over 6,000 robots delivered worldwide so far Endeavor Robotics is one of the main players in this field. At IDEX the company showed their broad portfolio of robots for military use. On the left of the photo there is the heavy-payload robot 710 Kobra. This robot was designed to provide strength, power and payload support in an easy to operate robot package. Kobra has a lift capacity of 150 kg and integrates numerous payloads to expand the operational area of the user. Kobra can reach over 3.5 metres, climb stairs and fits through doorways. With a payload of 70 kg the robot can still achieve sustained speeds of 12.9 km/h. Also of interest was the battle-tested Pack- Bot. This modular, adaptable and expandable robot can perform bomb disposal, surveillance, reconnaissance, CBRNe/HazMat detection and mapping. It is deployable in less than two minutes and can reach speeds of up to 9.3 km/h. More than 4,000 PackBots have been delivered worldwide so far. MineWolf at IDEX (df) At IDEX the company MineWolf showed their range of manned and unmanned platforms for the clearance of explosive threats together with their partner companies in the region. Interchangeable front end attachments provide tools for counter-ied tasks, explosive ordnance disposal, obstacle reduction and de-mining. Milrem s unmanned vehicle (df) Milrem has shown its THeMIS hybrid unmanned multimission tracked vehicle at IDEX. Compared to other UGV platforms, the innovation lies in the track system where all the necessary components are placed inside the track system, leaving the middle platform free for different applications. This enables using the platform for multimission superstructures. Weighing only 750 kg with a payload of 500 kg, the UGV can be used as a remote weapon station, remote observation and sensor vehicle, transport platform for the wounded and many other functions that can pass through any terrain imaginable, be it snow, sand or swamp. The vehicle might be operated remotely or autonomously, with a maximum speed of 50 km/h. The efficient work period is 8 hours with fully charged batteries and topped up gas tank.

5 5 Colt s weapons for military and law enforcement (df) Colt showed at IDEX several types of its new Monolithic Upper family. Today s battlefields demand the accuracy, reliability and performance of our new M4 Advanced Colt Carbine Monolithic ACC-M receiver system, the company said. This one-piece upper receiver provides a true free-floating barrel for increased precision. All variants of the AC- C-M have ambidextrous magazine releases and bolt catches as well as repeatable zero retention for optics and other accessories. From semi-only to 3-round burst to automatic modes of fire and fixed or folding front sights, the M4 ACC-M is available in an array of configurations. These options, combined with the Colt Monolithic receiver system, provide unmatched zero retention and repeatability not found with other systems. Also quite new was the shown automatic rifle family. Based on the battle-proven M16/M4 series of rifles the Colt IAR features a special heat-sink system, which significantly reduces the risk of cook-offs during extended periods of firing. It also provides extended barrel life. Another interesting weapon at Colt s booth was the 901 family. Initially developed to exceed the original SCAR requirements of a multi-calibre, single serial number modular weapon system, the Colt CM x51 mm NATO has proven very modular and versatile performance. The lower receiver and bolt carrier design enable the upper receiver group to be easily swapped out for any other Colt MilSpec upper receiver chambered in 5.56x45 mm NATO without tools in less than one minute. With this feature the soldier might reconfigure the weapon to any situation within seconds. Assault rifles at Kalashnikov (df) Kalashnikov showed their wide range of weapons for military and police forces during IDEX. Of special interest were the assault rifles, especially the AK74M that was developed to replace older 5.45 mm AK74 and AKS74 assault rifles. It is chambered for the Russian standard 5.45x39 mm ammunition. Handguard, magazine, buttstock and pistol grip are made of durable, impact-resistant polymer. Protective coatings ensure very good corrosion resistance of the metal parts. The polymer folding buttstock allows comfortable handling of the weapon during transportation inside the vehicle as well as during all types of airborne operations. The weapon can be fired with buttstock folded. There is a side mount rail for optical, red dot or night scopes. The also new muzzle brake flash hider reduces recoil and minimizes flash. The AK74M also features a base to mount a 40 mm underbarrel grenade launcher or bayonet. Other assault rifles on display were the AK101 (middle and bottom) and AK103 (top) with the photo showing them with the possible accessories Kalashnikov is providing for their assault rifles. Kit to change old rifles to new (df) Jordan Armament & Weapon Systems (JAWS) showed some quite interesting concepts at IDEX, among them a conversion kit. The M16/M4 conversion kit is the most effective method to extend the service life of the M16A1, one of the most widely-available rifles in the world, the company stated. Once converted, the M16A1 becomes equal in quality to the advanced M4 carbine. The conversion kit was produced by JAWS to facilitate the updating of the M16A1 rifles in service by the Jordan Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies in Jordan. Among others the JAR-556 also was in the focus of the visitors. JAWS Assault rifle JAR is a 5.56x45 mm calibre assault rifle produced for high-performance, reliability and accuracy. The company added: After proper evaluation JAWS has selected two standard barrel lengths for this rifle to be in 11.5 and 14.5 to meet different military applications.
