3 Motor Mike I INTRODUCTION These operating procedures cover the Motor Mikes listed in Table 1. These actuators incorporate a DC motor with integral gear head in a compact cylindrical casing. Fig. 1 below and Table 1 on the following page list the dimensions and models. Fig. 2 on page 5 shows the components. 5 Motor Mike RETRACTION STOP Fig. 2 Motor Mike Components You can operate any Motor Mike with one of the following Oriel Controllers, or build your own controller: Hand held controller for pinpoint positioning of a single Motor Mike Hand held controller for scanning and positioning of a single Motor Mike Joystick controller for three Motor Mikes Controller for scanning and positioning two Motor Mikes. For information on Oriel Motor Mike actuators operated by these controllers, refer to the Controller Operation Manual. If you want to build your own controller, contact the Oriel Sales Department for further technical details on Motor Mikes. " 5

6 Motor Mike Oriel controllers drive these actuators by applying a voltage to the integral 12V DC motor. (Normally the speed of the actuator will then depend on the load, and if the load changes the speed will also change.) Oriel controllers ensure that the actuator runs at a constant speed, independent of the load, by sensing the speed dependent back EMF of the motor and regulating the drive voltage for constant back EMF. Fig. 3 shows the maximum regulated speed against the load for Controllers. If, for example, your load is 8 kgf, then the maximum regulated speed will be mm/s. Load, what do we mean? The foad cited in the limiting speed vs. load curve, Fig. 3, is the load directed against the forward movement of the actuator. This is not the same as the mass on a horizontal translator driven by the actuator. The maximum recommended load is 15 kgf, while the translator could carry several hundred kg. 6

7 Motor Mike The actual load presented by a horizontal translator (or rotator) depends on the translator springs and the bearing design. Ideal bearings with low rolling friction, produce only a small additional load. Ball bearings become slightly distorted and if the translator is heavily loaded, the balls make small plastic and sometimes permanent indentations in the bearing surfaces. (Roller bearings are better for heavy loads as the load is distributed over a larger area.) Usually the stationary load is higher than the dynamic load. The load presented by a stationary, heavily loaded horizontal translator should be measured to determine whether these actuators are suitable. With a vertical translator, the 15 kgf maximum means that the maximum mass on the translator (including the translator stage) should be 13.5 kgf. Translator springs typically produce 1.5 kgf.. i 7

9 Motor Mike III MOTOR MIKE OPERATION The perfonnance of any precision positioner depends on proper design and integration of the Controller Actuator Driven System Ensure that these actuators are not side loaded, and that the bearing surface is chosen correctly, i.e. spherical Motor Mike tip on hardened flat or flat Motor Mike tip onto hardened sphere. 1. Check that the Motor MikanA hub matches the micrometer being replaced or the mating part into which it is being installed. Check that the proper tip, flat or spherical, is being used. 2 Install the Motor Mike in the mating part using appropriate hardware. Check the mechanical configuration for sturdiness. Where a set screw is used to secure the Motor Mike, check that the set screw is tight enough to prevent the motor from being forced out of its mount under load, but do not overtighten. 3 Connection to Oriel Controllers: a b Connect the Motor Mike cable to the Controller cable. Make sure the connections are properly seated before applying power. We supply 2.0 foot (61 0 mm) long cables with Motor Mikes, and 6.0 foot (1.8 m) long cables with controllers. You can use cables up to 100 feet (30.5 m) in length with some loss in performance. Turn on the switch. If the actuator runs in the opposite direction, the cables are connected upside down. Turn the switch off, disconnect the cables, and reconnect correctly... 9

10 Motor MlkeTM IV DO'S AND DON'TS 1 Highest Resolution Operation To reach a precise position with an Oriel Controller, run the actuator close to the position, turn off the drive, and set the speed control for low speed. Using the jog button (i.e., short voltage pulses) move the actuator to the final position. 2 Backlash Like all mechanical assemblies, Motor Mikes exhibit backlash. This can be as much as 6 J.Lm (but is usually 2 to 4 J.Lm). This means that after you have driven to a point and reversed the motor, the motor turns but the spindle does not move until the gear backlash is taken out. High resolution is best achieved by approaching the desired point from one direction. If you overshoot the set point, back up at least 10 J.Lffi, and re-approach from the original direction. The backlash is repeatable to 0. 1 J.Lm under constant loac:l/drive conditions. 3 These Motor Mikes have hard stops at the end of travel, in either direction. They can be driven against these internal or external stops for extended periods without damage when operated by an Oriel Controller (provided the appropriate input voltage level is not exceeded). 4 Do not rotate the spindle manually against the motor. This will destroy the mechanism. 5 Fig. 4 shows the recommended technique for driving a translator. The tip should push against a hard, smooth, bearing surface to prevent brinelling. (The tips are interchangeable.) 10

12 WARRANTY AND RETURNS WARRANTY Oriel Instruments warrants that all goods described in this manual (except consumables such as lamps, bulbs, filters, ellipses, etc.) shall be free from defects in material and workmanship. Such defects must become apparent within the following period: 1. All products described here, except spare parts: one (1) year or 3000 hours of operation, whichever comes first, after delivery of the goods to buyer. 2. Spare parts: ninety (90) days after delivery of goods to buyer. Oriel Instruments' liability under this warranty is limited to the adjustment, repair and/or replacement of the defective part(s). During the above listed warranty period, Oriel Instruments shall provide all materials to accomplish the repaired adjustment, repair or replacement. Oriel Instruments shall provide the labor required during the above listed warranty period to adjust, repair and/or replace the defective goods at no cost to the buyer ONLY IF the defective goods are returned, freight prepaid, to an Oriel Instruments designated facility. If goods are not returned to Oriel Instruments, and user chooses to have repairs made at their premises, Oriel Instruments shall provide labor for field adjustment, repair and/or replacement at prevailing rates for field service, on a portal-to-portal basis. Oriel Instruments shall be relieved of all obligations and liability under this warranty if: 1. The user operates the device with any accessory, equipment or part not specifically approved or manufactured or specified by Oriel Instruments unless buyer furnishes reasonable evidence that such installations were not a cause of the defect. This provision shall not apply to any accessory, equipment or part which does not affect the safe operation of the device. 2. The goods are not operated or maintained in accordance with Oriel's instructions and specifications. 3. The goods have been repaired, altered or modified by other than Oriel authorized personnel. 4. Buyer does not return the defective goods, freight prepaid, to Oriel repair facility within the applicable warranty period... IT IS EXPRESSLY AGREED THAT THIS WARRANTY SHALL REPLACE ALL WARRANTIES OF FITNESS AND MERCHANTABILITY. BUYER HEREBY WAIVES ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, GUARANTIES, CONDITIONS OR LIABILITIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, ARISING BY LAW OR OTHERWISE, WHETHER OR NOT OCCASIONED BY ORIEL'S NEGLIGENCE. This warranty shall not be extended, altered or varied except by a written document signed by both parties. If any portion of this agreement is invalidated, the remainder of the agreement shall remain in full force and effect. CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES - Oriel Instruments shall not be responsible for consequential damages resulting from misfunctions or malfunctions of the goods described in this manual. Oriel's total responsibility is limited to repairing or replacing the misfunctioning or malfunctioning goods under the terms and conditions of the above described warranty. INSURANCE- Persons receiving goods for demonstrations, demo loan, temporary use or in any manner in which title is not transferred from Oriel, shall assume full responsibility for any and all damage while in their care, custody and control. If damage occurs, unrelated to the proper and warranted use and performance of the goods, recipient of the goods accepts full responsibility for restoring the goods to their condition upon original delivery, and for assuming all costs and charges. RETURNS Before returning equipment to Oriel for repair, please call the Customer Service Department at (203) Have your purchase order number available before calling Oriel. The Customer Service Representative will give you a Return Material Authorization number (RMA). Having an RMA will shorten the time required for the repair, because it ensures that your equipment will be properly processed. Write the RMA on the returned equipment's box. Equipment returned without a RMA may be rejected by the Oriel Receiving Department. Equipment returned under warranty will be returned with no charge for the repair or shipping. Oriel will notify you of repairs not covered by warranty, with the cost of the repair, before starting the work. Please return equipment in the original (or equivalent) packaging. You will be responsible for damage incurred from inadequate packaging, if the original packaging is not used. Include the cables, connector caps and antistatic materials sent and/or used with the equipment, so that Oriel can verify correct operation of these accessories.
