2 INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION: The following document outlines the installation of the ARC Skid Tube Step and the ARC-500UH-1 Utility Handles onto the MDHI 369D, 369E, 369FF, & 500N series helicopters. The Step mounts onto the LH or RH landing gear skid tube and enables passengers and crew to stand on the skid tube with greater ease and stability. The installation allows for weights to be mounted directly to the step for use in counterweight on the opposite skid tube. The Utility Handles mount onto the fuselage and provide a secure hand hold for passengers and crew when entering and exiting the helicopter. The Skid Step mounts to the landing gear skid tube between the cross tubes. Two Brackets are bolted to skid tube using the existing mount provisions for the landing gear abrasion strips. The Skid Step is then installed onto the brackets using pins. The Utility Handles mount onto the exterior fuselage at the existing hoist mounting locations. The handles can be mounted on both the left and/or right hand side of the fuselage in the forward and/or aft configuration. 1.0 SKID STEP INSTALLATION TOOLS AND MATERIALS: 1. ARC Skid Step Assembly (QTY 1 or 2) 2. 3/8 Wrench and/or Ratchet 3. 7/16 Wrench and/or Ratchet 4. 5/16 Wrench and/or Ratchet 5. Plastic scraper 6. Primer MIL-PRF (or Equivalent) 7. 3 ARC-500 SKID TUBE STEP INSTALLATION (LH and RH installation are similar) 1. Remove the aft bolts from inboard and outboard sides of each Abrasion Strip shown in Figures 1 & 2. Discard removed hardware. LH and RH installation are similar. 4 2. This step is applicable to the locations of the removed bolts from step 1 (4 places). Drill out existing rivnuts installed in skid tube using a ¼ (max dia.) drill bit. Deburr all holes. Discard the rivnuts, all waste, and metal shavings (FOD) left over from drilling. CAUTION Do not damage Skid Tube or Abrasion Strip during drilling. Do not oversize the existing ¼ hole in Skid Tube. To prepare the skid tube surface for the step brackets, remove existing antiskid (wingwalk or equivalent) finish from the skid tube using plastic scraper (or equivalent nondamaging means of removal). Figure 4 outlines the typical area to remove aft of the removed bolt holes. Use supplied brackets to check fitment and removal area as needed. 5 4. Dry fit forward and aft step mounting brackets and verify the AN4-40 cross bolt install through the bracket and skid tube. Do not tighten hardware at this step. Dry fit Skid Step to verify the pin holes align. Adjust aft bracket as needed for pin alignment. Dry fit Pins. 5. Remove Skid Step Assembly by removing the AN4-40 bolts (leave the Pins installed and the Skid Step assembled to the Brackets). Apply a generous amount of sealant (PS870 or equiv.) to all faying surfaces (Ref Figure 5). Prime any exposed metallic surfaces using MIL-PRF (or equiv.) Apply sealant on faying surface indicated Figure 5 Tube Bracket Sealant Application Locations 6. Install forward and aft step mounting brackets wet with sealant on all faying surfaces of the brackets and skid tube. Install all bracket hardware (1X AN4-40 Bolt, 2X NAS1149F0332P Washer, 1X MS21042L4 Locking Nut) loosely. Wipe off any excess sealant. 6 7. Ensure pins move freely in and out, adjust brackets to achieve appropriate fit. 8. Hold AN4-40 Bolt heads and torque MS21042L Locknut to In-lbs. Figure 7 Skid Step Installed 9. Ensure pins move freely in and out. If pins do not move freely, ream holes with a 25/64 (MAX) reamer. 10. Ensure that all pin handles and AN4 fastener threads (screw-tails) are faced inboard of the aircraft after installation is complete. 11. Update the Aircraft Weight and Balance as shown: Table 1 Weight and Balance WARNING Do Not Oversize Pin Holes in Skid Step. 7 12. Create and attach the following Placard on the instrument panel in full view of the pilot. Optional Counter Weight Installation: Counterweight can be installed onto the skid step using the (optional) mounting provisions included with the Skid Step (Figure 8). Installation of counterweight is only applicable for helicopter is being used for external load operations. Maximum Counterweight 150 lbs. No more than 90 lbs installed under any single Hand Screw (location). Evenly distribute counterweigh over length of Skid Step. WARNING ENSURE ALL COUNTERWEIGHTS ARE SECURED TO PREVENT LOAD SHIFTING DURING FLIGHT. 9 2.0 UTILITY HANDLE INSTALLATION TOOLS AND MATERIALS: 1. ARC-500UH-1 Aft LH Utility Handle Assembly (QTY 1 Optional) 2. ARC-500UH-2 Aft RH Utility Handle Assembly (QTY 1 Optional) 3. ARC-500UH-3 Fwd Utility Handle Assembly (QTY 2 Optional) 4. Flat-Head Screwdriver 5. Phillips Head Screwdriver INSTALLATION LOCATIONS: Figures 1 and 2 show the installation locations for the ARC-500UH utility handles. Figure 1 shows the general installation area on the right-hand side of the helicopter (LH side similar). Figures 2 and 3 display the mounting locations in detail on the side of the helicopter. ARC-500UH-1 and ARC-500UH-2 mount to the AFT LH or RH mounting locations, respectively. ARC-500UH-3 mounts to the FWD LH and/or RH mounting locations. Figure 1. Remove nylon screws from existing hoist mount provision on the LH and RH side of the fuselage using a flat-head screwdriver or appropriate tool. Figure 3. 11 2. Attach utility handles using 3X MS24694S53 Countersunk Screws using a phillipshead screwdriver. Place gasket between the handle mounting surface and fuselage. Tighten and torque hardware to in-lbs. Figure 9 Picture of Utility Handles Installed Note Weight of each utility handle is less than 1 lb. Change is aircraft weight and balance from Utility Handle installation is negligible. UTILITY HANDLE REMOVAL (LH and RH installation are similar) Utility handle removal is opposite of installation. 1. Remove 3 mounting screws on each handle. 2. Remove Utility Handle and Gasket 3.
