More to Love A Look All Its Own Although a number of its features are derived from the redesigned 2016 Prius Liftback, the new Prius Prime model is truly the first of its kind. Not only does it offer outstanding fuel economy and performance, it will now be available for the first time in all 50 states. While it retains the general iconic shape of the Prius family, the Prius Prime has a persona all its own. Though based on the Prius Liftback s redesigned platform, Prius Prime is easily distinguished from its sibling as well as the competition. Hybrid Technology The new Prius Prime is designed to maximize the benefits and advantages of both electric and hybrid performance. Equipped with a larger battery and a dual motor drivetrain, it can operate longer in EV mode. With the new Prius Prime, drivers can enjoy an EPA-estimated EV mode driving range¹ of up to 25 miles with an EPA-estimated MPGe 2 of 133. Or take advantage of its hybrid mode, which offers an EPA-estimated MPG 3 of 55 city/53 hwy/54 combined. The active grille shutter automatically opens and closes to control the volume of cooling air directed to the engine, reducing wind resistance when closed and the amount of time it takes to warm up the engine when open. Newly designed and compact Quad LED projector headlamps are standard and feature an ultra-thin lens for a modern, high-tech look. Combined with the lower front face, they help provide excellent downward visibility; LED turn signals are integrated into the assembly, and LED accent and fog lights are available. Bumper sides feature a more aerodynamic shape that integrates and accentuates the new ultra-thin, compact headlamps while the corners protrude to emphasize the Prius Prime s wide stance. 7

16 Performance TOYOTA S AMAZING PLUG-IN HYBRID DRIVETRAIN The Prius Prime s advanced plug-in hybrid system enables the driver to enjoy the added economy of pure EV mode driving or the enhanced capability of HV driving. Select the play button for a demonstration of how Prius Prime works in both EV and HV modes. The plug-in hybrid system in the new Prius Prime uses a dual drivetrain that consists of the same 1.8-liter aluminum DOHC 16-valve engine with VVT-i found in the Prius Liftback and two motor generators: MG1 and MG2. However, unlike the Prius Liftback which can only use MG2 to deliver drive force, the Prius Prime s system can use both MG1 and MG2 to deliver power. This results in smoother EV mode acceleration and is the main reason the Prius Prime can be driven up to a maximum speed of 84 MPH in EV mode (under certain conditions). 15

17 Performance ADVANCED HYBRID POWERTRAIN COMPONENTS A variety of advanced powertrain components and technologies contribute to the Prius Prime s enhanced performance capabilities, exceptional efficiency and emissions control. DRIVE MODES The Prius Prime s advanced powertrain utilizes three drive modes: EV, HV, and EV Auto to provide the driver with flexible options to help maximize fuel economy and performance based on driving needs and conditions. DRIVE MODES All three modes work together with the vehicle s driver-selectable ECO, Normal and Power modes, which monitor throttle response sensitivity to support specific driving needs: ECO for more efficient lower-speed driving, Normal for most everyday driving situations, and Power when added drive force is required for highway driving, merging, passing, etc. HV MODE HV mode efficiently combines the drive force from the gasoline engine with electric power from the hybrid battery when needed. (This mode is the same as the Prius Liftback default mode.) EV MODE EV mode delivers power based on the hybrid battery s output range, enabling the vehicle to operate without starting the engine, up to a maximum speed of 84 MPH under certain conditions. EV AUTO MODE EV Auto mode switches between the EV and HV modes to maximize efficiency. 16

18 Performance LITHIUM-ION BATTERY The Prius Prime has a high-capacity lithium-ion battery and a high-efficiency charging system, which delivers dynamic performance and exceptional fuel economy. The number of lithium-ion cells has been increased from 56 to 95 with battery capacity now double that of the previous plug-in model (8.8 kwh vs. 4.4 kwh). In addition, a battery warming system has been added to help ensure the vehicle can start in EV mode in freezing temperatures. Compact and lightweight, the lithium-ion battery is located in the cargo area. By optimizing the density of the cell stacks, Toyota has minimized the impact on cargo space while allowing for a flat floor. ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (ECVT) The hybrid drivetrain is paired with an Electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT). Unlike a conventional gear-driven transmission found in most vehicles, the ECVT features an infinite number of gears that enable the engine to operate in the optimal rpm range regardless of vehicle speed. Consequently, the ECVT plays a key role in promoting excellent fuel efficiency. The ECVT in the Prius Prime has been further refined with a one-way clutch that allows the dual-motor drive system to transfer more power for smoother EV acceleration. REGENERATIVE BRAKING During regenerative braking, the electric motor serves as a generator to produce electricity to help recharge the hybrid battery. This allows the driver to save close to 30% of the energy that would be changed to heat and lost to the atmosphere. 19 Performance SUPERB RIDE, HANDLING AND CONTROL Extra attention was paid to Prius Prime s suspension, steering and brake systems for optimum ride, handling and performance characteristics. A FINE-TUNED SUSPENSION SYSTEM The MacPherson Strut front suspension and trailing arm double-wishbone suspension has been refined specifically for the Prius Prime for enhanced handling, control and ride comfort. JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF ASSIST Electric Power Steering (EPS) combines instant feedback and just the right amount of steering assist, based on driving conditions. Equipped with a brushless motor with an integrated ECU, it promotes quiet, efficient operation. BRAKES ARE LIGHTWEIGHT AND POWERFUL Prius Prime s electronically-controlled brake system consists of power-assisted ventilated front disc brakes and solid rear disc brakes. Both feature aluminum calipers that deliver optimum low-vehicle weight efficiency. The system also includes a built-in parking brake with foot pedal operation for added convenience. 18

21 Efficiency CUSTOMERS CAN EASILY CALCULATE THE SAVINGS Although individual savings will vary depending on various factors (length of commute, driving conditions, etc.), the Prius Prime can offer significant benefits and cost savings. 22 Efficiency DRIVING TIPS TO INCREASE FUEL EFFICIENCY Prius Prime drivers can do their part to maximize fuel savings by adopting more efficient driving habits and practices. Avoid speeds in excess of 60 MPH when possible (fuel efficiency declines at speeds above 60 MPH and drops sharply at speeds in excess of 70 MPH). Monitor traffic ahead to avoid heavy braking (light braking leverages fuel economy of regenerative braking function). Utilize pulse and glide technique by accelerating briskly from a start for strong torque output, then gliding to leverage EV capability whenever possible. Maintain recommended tire pressure. 26 Safety PASSIVE SAFETY FEATURES JUST IN CASE Prius Prime s Active Safety Features work together to help protect the driver and occupants in the event of certain collisions. From a rigidly reinforced safety design to a comprehensive system of eight standard airbags, these systems help prevent or reduce the risk of injury. 8 Standard Airbags Included are driver and front passenger advanced front airbags, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags, front passenger seat cushion airbag, driver s knee airbag, and front and rear side curtain airbags. 1 Seatbelts To help protect occupants in the event of certain severe collisions, the driver s seat features Emergency Locking Retractors (ELR) while the passenger seats include Automatic Locking Retractors and Emergency Locking Retractors (ALR/ELR). TPMS This four-sensor system 2 alerts the driver via a warning light when the pressure in one or more of the vehicle s tires is critically low. LATCH This feature enables both rear seats to accommodate compatible child safety seats. 25

PASSIVE SAFETY 1 All the airbag systems are Supplemental Restraint Systems. All airbags (if installed) are designed to inflate only under certain conditions and in certain types of severe collisions: typically, frontal and knee airbags inflate in frontal collisions, side torso and side curtain airbags inflate in side collisions and roll-sensing curtain airbags inflate at a severe roll angle or roll rate. To decrease the risk of injury from an inflating airbag, always wear seatbelts, sit upright in the middle of the seat as far back as possible and do not lean against the door. Do not put objects in front of an airbag or around the seatback. Do not use a rearward-facing child seat in any front passenger seat. The force of an inflating airbag may cause serious injury or death. See Owner s Manual for details. 2 The Tire Pressure Monitor System alerts the driver when tire pressure is critically low. Level 1 (120-volt standard household outlet) charging time: Under 5 hours; 30 minutes Level 2 (240-volt charger station) charging time: Approximately 2 hours; 10 minutes The charging system 1 in the new Prius Prime has been considerably enhanced over the previous generation plug-in hybrid. There s a new improved charge lid and connector lock and the function of the charger timer has also been improved. Designed for greater functionality and convenience, the charge management system allows for weekly charging with up to 15 different settings. Prius Prime also includes the added comfort of a pre-climate setting which can be turned on 10 minutes prior to departure. MORE POWERFUL; MORE COMPACT In addition to increased charge output, the size of the charger unit has been reduced from 8.0 L to 3.8 L, enabling it to be placed under the rear seat and preserving cargo space. 28

Its expansive network allows Prius Prime drivers to drive in EV mode more often and helps maximize efficiency. Approximately 60% of ChargePoint stations can be used free of charge. THERE S SOMETHING EXTRA IN EVERY PRIUS PRIME GLOVE BOX. Every new Prius Prime comes with a standard ChargePoint Driver Kit that gives the driver access to all public ChargePoint stations.
