4 Running your locomotive in the analog Running your locomotive with an HO transformer We recommend using the MRC Control Master 20, MRC Tech 4 Series, or the Bridgewerks Magnum Series transformers. These transformers will best complement your locomotive s operation. If you are using other transformers, you may need to change some CV s to obtain optimal performance. 1. Set the direction switch on the transformer so that your locomotive will move in your desired direction. 2. With track power off, place your locomotive and tender on the track. Insert the two pins on the leads from the tender into the receptacles on the locomotive. Couple the tender to the locomotive Be sure to insert the two pins if you are operating with the tender. The Veranda will operate without the tender. No damage will result if the pins are plugged into the wrong receptical, but tender lighting will only operate when the pins are inserted into the correct receptacles. While your locomotive requires curves with a minimum radius of 18, we recommend a minimum radius of 22. Pin Couplers Locomotive Figure 1. Coupler and tether connections Pin Tender 3. Slowly turn the throttle up until you hear the Quantum system sounds activate. The Mars light will illuminate. 4. Continue to turn up the throttle and move the locomotive out. When the locomotive begins to move, the headlight will illuminate and the Mars light will flash. As you increase or decrease the speed of the locomotive, the revving sounds will correspond with the speed of the locomotive. The headlight will illuminate brighter. As you bring the locomotive to a stop by reducing the throttle, you will hear the locomotive s squealing brake sounds. 4

5 Running your locomotive in the analog Running your locomotive with an HO transformer (continued) If you find that you need to turn your throttle up quite high to start your locomotive, you may choose to adjust the operation of your locomotive for use with your particular transformer (see Setting V-Start on page 11). Transitioning between diesel and turbine sounds Your locomotive is equipped with both diesel and turbine sounds. To simulate the operation of the prototype, the locomotive s maximum speed in diesel mode is 25 scale miles per hour. To transition between diesel and turbine modes, reduce the throttle until the locomotive stops moving, but do not completely turn off track power. At this point, th Mars light will turn off. Use the direction switch to sound the horn four times, and the diesel-turbine transition will commence. The transition lasts for about 30 seconds. The Mars light will turn on when the transition is complete. Repeat this procedure to transition back to the other mode. When you power down the locomotive, the locomotive will remember its current mode of operation. For example, if the locomotive is in turbine mode when it is powered down, the locomotive will be in turbine mode when it is powered up again. Reversing the locomotive Follow these steps to operate your locomotive in reverse. 1. Bring the locomotive to a stop and reduce power until the headlight turns off and the Mars light stops flashing. 2. Flip the direction switch on the transformer to the opposite position, then increase the throttle. At this point, the back-up light on the rear of the locomotive and the rear of the tender illuminates while the headlight on the locomotive switches to dim. Entering neutral Enter neutral by simply turning the throttle down until the locomotive comes to a stop, but do not turn the track power completely off. At this point, the headlight will turn off, the Mars light will stop flashing, and the locomotive s idle sounds will start. You will initially hear a short air release when the locomotive stops moving and enters neutral, and then a longer air release sound about five seconds later. The other background sounds will start. After the third air release sound, you can also use the direction switch to blow the horn or turn the bell on or off. In neutral, the locomotive sits motionless on the track. Because track power is not turned off, the locomotive will continue to make prototypical sounds appropriate to its resting state. The Mars light will remain illuminated. If you experience any difficulties as you attempt to enter neutral, you may need to program your locomotive for optimal use with your particular transformer (see Programming your locomotive in the analog on pages 8-10). 5

6 Running your locomotive in the analog Sounding the horn Use your transformer s direction switch to sound the horn for short or long blasts. While the locomotive is moving, slide the direction switch to the opposite position to turn on the horn. Return the switch to the initial position to discontinue the horn sounds. The locomotive will not change directions when you blow the horn. If you flip the direction switch too slowly from one position to the other, you can loose track power momentarily. Activating the bell Use your transformer s direction switch to activate the bell sounds. You can activate the bell and leave it on while you operate other functions on the locomotive. Turn the bell on by flipping the direction switch back and forth quickly. Flip the switch back and forth again to discontinue the sounds. When you discontinue the bell sounds, it will continue ringing for a few seconds to simulate the slowing of the bell mechanism. If you flip the direction switch back and forth too slowly, you will get a short blast of the horn instead of the bell. Creating the Doppler effect You will find that a real locomotive s horn seems to change pitch as it passes by. Follow these steps to simulate this effect. 1. While the locomotive is moving toward the observer, slide the direction switch to the opposite position to sound the horn. 2. Wait at least one second while the horn is blasting. 3. Flip the direction switch back and forth quickly so the horn does not shut off. You will hear the horn and other sounds shift in pitch as the locomotive passes by. This will not turn on the bell. 4. Either slide the direction switch back to its initial position to shut off the horn, or continue with long or short blasts. The locomotive sounds will automatically return to normal after a few seconds. If the bell sounds were activated, they will be discontinued automatically. 6

7 Running your locomotive in the analog Changing directions without turning off the sound Follow these steps to use your transformer s direction switch while the locomotive is in neutral to change the locomotive s direction. 1. Put the locomotive in neutral by bringing the locomotive to a stop. Do not completely turn off the throttle. 2. Slide the direction switch on the transformer to the opposite position after you hear the short air release, but before you hear the longer air release and the pump sounds turn on. During this five-second interval, the horn will not blow when you flip the direction switch. 3. Turn up the throttle to resume locomotive operations in the opposite direction. If you miss the five-second interval, changing directions will momentarily discontinue the sounds. To change directions, you now have two options. First, you may turn the power all the way off, slide the direction switch, and turn the power back on. Alternately, you may slide the direction switch to the opposite position (the horn will come on) and then turn up the throttle. When the locomotive starts to move in the opposite direction, the horn will stop. Setting your locomotive s inertia or momentum With Regulated Throttle Control (RTC), your locomotive is capable of operating as though it has massive inertia. For example, your locomotive will resist changes in speed once it is moving and will resist starting up quickly if it is at rest. If your locomotive encounters a grade, it will eventually slow down. Increasing the throttle will slowly accelerate it back to speed. You can set your locomotive to have any of 16 different inertia or momentum levels (see Programming your locomotive in the analog on pages 8-10). Level 0 is the default, which is no inertia. At this setting, your locomotive will accelerate or stop as quick as the internal flywheel will allow. For any inertia from 1-15, your locomotive will take longer to change speed. At Level 1, it will take a few seconds to achieve full speed at max throttle or come to a stop; at Level 15, it will take a few minutes, depending on your transformer and the conditions of your layout. Bringing the throttle down quickly will trigger the braking sounds. Adjust the locomotive s inertia to fine-tune the sounds. If you have selected any of the inertia settings from Level 2 to 15, the locomotive will produce Sound of Power effects while the locomotive is accelerating or decelerating. Once the locomotive has achieved its final speed, it will produce standard turbine sounds appropriate to its throttle setting. 7

8 Running your locomotive in the analog Programming your locomotive in the analog All advanced operations are easily programmed via your standard HO transformer. After entering programming (see Table 1 on page 10), features are selected and operated by using the direction switch. Follow these steps to enter programming using the transformer s direction switch. 1. Apply power and turn up the throttle to hear the sound system come on. 2. Within five seconds of powering up, turn on the bell by flipping the direction switch back and forth quickly three times. If you delay too long after power has been first applied, the opportunity to enter programming will time out. You will need to start again by shutting off and reapplying track power. Once you perform the three bell operations after applying power, the bell will shut off, the lights will flash, and you will hear Enter Programming. After you enter programming mode, you will hear an announcement of the first programming option, System Volume. 3. To access other options, simply slide the direction switch to the opposite position and leave it there. Listen as each option number is announced in order. Refer to Figure 1 on page Slide the switch back when you wish to stop at a particular option. After you stop at an option you will hear the option s name announced. When you are scrolling through and stopping at program options, you are not making any changes. To make changes, you must actually enter the option as discussed in Step 6. If you accidentally go to a higher number programming option other than the one you wanted, simply turn the power off, re-enter programming, and start again. Alternately, you can scroll forward until the counter starts again at the beginning. 5. After the verbal announcement of a program option, you can enter that option by flipping the direction switch back and forth once. Upon entering an option, you will hear the current setting for that option. For unused options, you will hear Reserved. For any volume option, you will hear Volume equals X (where X is its present level setting). After a moment, you will hear the sound playing at its current volume. Entering a programming option does not change the settings for that option; it only provides information about its current value. 8

After entering the option, flipping the direction switch back and forth once to program the new settings as described in Table 1 on page 10. To decrease the setting by one level, flip the direction switch back and forth one time quickly. To increase the setting by one level, slide the direction switch to the opposite position, listen for the locomotive s hiss, and then flip the switch back to the other position. Since System Volume is the first option, you can flip the switch back and forth or simply slide it to the opposite position immediately after entering programming to change the volume. 7. Flip the direction switch anytime to the opposite position and leave it there to exit an option. 8. Exit Programming mode at anytime by turning the power off and back on again. 9

11 Running your locomotive in the analog Example: Setting V-Start (programming option 8) Setting V-Start will determine the voltage (and throttle position) where your locomotive will start to move out of neutral. 1. Enter Programming mode after powering up your locomotive by turning the bell on, then off, and then on. 2. After the Enter Programming followed by One - System Volume announcement of the first program option, slide the direction switch to the opposite position and leave it there. After you hear the announcement Program Option 2, 3 etc. stop when you hear eight by moving the direction switch back. You will hear V-Start. 3. Flip the direction switch back and forth to enter this option. You will hear V-Start equals X where X is the track voltage value currently set to leave neutral. 4. Flip the direction switch back and forth to activate this option. Hear the message Set throttle to V-Start and after three seconds the voltage will be announced. If you move the throttle, the new track voltage value is announced. 5. Once throttle is set, flip the direction switch back and forth to start the programming this setting. The bell will ring continually, indicating that the correct value is being calculated. If you chose a very low setting, the bell will ring for a long time. If you do not get a setting within a minute, chose a slightly higher throttle value. At the end of the process, the locomotive will move slightly and stop. The horn will hoot, signifying the end of the operation and you will hear the message V-Start = X where X is the new setting. The value of V-Start may decrease from the original voltage reading because the power pack may drop voltage during calibration. Sometimes it is difficult to see the locomotive move unless you are watching carefully. 6. To leave Programming mode, turn the throttle off, and then power up for usual locomotive operation. To continue with setting V-Max, slide the direction switch to the opposite position and wait for the next programming option. 11

12 Running your locomotive in the analog Example: Setting V-Max (programming option 9) V-Max is set in the same manner as V-Start, except you will hear Set throttle to V-Max after activating the option. Simply flip the direction switch on the controller to set V-Max. When double-heading your QSI Quantum system-equipped locomotives, make sure that both locomotives have similar speed/throttle characteristics by adjusting V-Start and V-Max. This will prevent them from fighting each other. 12

13 Running your locomotive in the DCC DCC operation These steps will allow you to start operating your locomotive immediately using any qualified NMRA command station. Configuration Variables (CV) are explained in greater detail in the National Model Railroading Association (NMRA) publication, DCC Recommended Practics RP This document is available online at Additional information is available at the Lionel website, We recommend using the MRC Control Master 20, MRC Tech 4 Series, or the Bridgewerks Magnum Series transformers. With track power off, place your locomotive on the track. Couple the locomotive to the tender, then insert the pins on the tender into the receptacles in the locomotive. Refer to Figure 1 on page 4. Be sure to insert the two pins if you are operating with the tender. The Veranda will operate without the tender. No damage will result if the pins are plugged into the wrong receptical, but tender lighting will only operate when the pins are inserted into the correct receptacles. While your locomotive requires curves with a minimum radius of 18, we recommend a minimum radius of Power up the track and select locomotive number 3. You will hear the air let-off, diesel motor start-up sequence or an abbreviated turbine start-up sequence, depending on the locomotives previous mode. Your locomotive was factory-programmed with ID# 3. See page 23 to change your locomotive s ID#. 3. Set your controller to 126 (preferable) or 28 (acceptable) speed step range. 4. Start your locomotive by turning up the throttle. When you reduce your locomotive s speed to zero, the locomotive will automatically enter neutral, with background sounds appropriate to its resting state. The direction of your locomotive will change when you press the direction button. As you increase or decrease the speed of the locomotive, the diesel or turbine sounds will correspond with the speed of the locomotive and be proportional to the locomotive s loading. The headlight will switch to bright. As you bring the locomotive to a stop by reducing the throttle, you will hear the locomotive s squealing brake sounds. 13

14 Running your locomotive in the DCC Using your DCC controller Table 2 on page 14 provides the features that have been pre-assigned to your DCC function buttons. Please note that the functions may be different in the neutral state (locomotive stopped) and the motive states (locomotive moving in forward or reverse). After you have selected your locomotive, simply press any of the function buttons listed below to produce the described effects. 15 Running your locomotive in the DCC Activating the coupler sounds The F3 button on your controller produces prototypical coupler close and release sounds. As your locomotive is about to couple up to a string of cars, press the F3 button to produce the crashing sound of locomotive coupling. Use the F3 button again as the locomotive moves to produce the same sound as the slack is taken up in the cars. As you disconnect cars over uncoupler magnets, use the F3 button in neutral to produce uncoupling sounds. Press the F3 button one time to produce the sound of the lift bar and coupling pin being raised. This operation also arms the uncoupling sound effect. Press the F3 button again while moving or in neutral to produce the sound of the coupler knuckle opening and the brake air-lines parting. Sound of Power If CV 3 and CV 4 are set to non-zero values, your locomotive will produce diesel revving sounds under acceleration and lighter sounds under deceleration. The level of labored sounds is proportional to the level of CV 3 and CV 4 and the increase or decrease in track power. Setting your locomotive to respond to the throttle There are three ways your locomotive can respond to your throttle. The default is Speed Control. If you prefer, change the setting in CV Under Standard Throttle Control (STC), the power to the locomotive is controlled directly by the throttle setting. With STC, the speed of the locomotive will change with loading and variations in track voltage. 2. With Speed Control (SC), the locomotive maintains the same speed, regardless of varying load or track voltage conditions. The throttle setting (using 128 speed steps) selects the locomotive s speed in 1 smph (scale miles per hour) increments. For example, if you set the throttle at 35, the model locomotive will go 35 smph on level track or uphill or down hill. If you use 14 or 28 speed steps, you will need to multiply your settings by 9 and 4.5 respectively to compute your scale speed. This is the default setting. 3. Regulated Throttle Control (RTC) combines the benefits of Standard Throttle Control and Speed Control and is the preferred method when multiple heading Quantum-equipped locomotives together. RTC maintains locomotive speed through minor impediments such as misaligned track joints, rough switches, tight curves, etc., but also allows gradual power equalization when locomotives are used in concert. 15

16 Running your locomotive in the DCC Setting your locomotive s cruise control Quantum Cruise Control behaves in much the same way as cruise control on a modern automobile. When Cruise Control is on, the locomotive will continue at its present speed regardless of grades, changes in load, or tight curves. Turning the throttle up or down will not affect the speed of the locomotive, but will cause Sound-of-Power sounds to change in direct proportion to the throttle s movement from the initial setting (where Cruise Control was turned on). You can increase the laboring motor sounds in Cruise Control as a train climbs a grade or decrease the Sound-of-Power effects as the train moves down the grade. Cruise Control is only available under Regulated Throttle Control or Speed Control. Press F9 and hear two short horn blasts when Cruise Control is toggled on Press F9 and hear one short horn blast when Cruise Control is toggled off. Return the throttle to its initial setting to avoid acceleration or deceleration when Cruise Control is toggled off. Cruise Control is automatically turned off when the speed step is reduced to zero or track power is turned off. Activating the horn and bell sounds (F2 and F1) While some DCC controllers have separate HORN and BELL buttons, the horn function is usually assigned to F2, and the bell function might be assigned to F3 or F1 on your DCC controller. The F2 button behaves differently than using the HORN button. There is no difference in operation between the bell button and its corresponding Function button. Horn operation Press and hold the HORN button, and the horn sound will play as long as the button is pressed. Press the F2 button, and the horn sound will start. You must press F2 again to discontinue the sounds. Bell operation Press the BELL button, and the bell sounds will start. You must press BELL again to discontinue the sounds. Press the F3 or F1 button, and the bell sounds will start. You must press F3 or F1 again to discontinue the sounds. 16

17 Running your locomotive in the DCC Dynamic brakes (F5) Pressing the F5 button will trigger the dynamic brake sounds. The dynamic brake function automatically turns off when entering or leaving neutral or if the throttle is turned up. Creating the Doppler effect with DCC (F6) With DCC, there are two ways to trigger the Doppler effect. First, you can use the function button dedicated to the Doppler effect. Alternately, you may see Creating the Doppler page 6 to quickly interrupt the horn signal. To use the DCC controller to create this effect, start the horn by pressing and releasing the F2 button. Press the F6 (Doppler shift) button to hear the Doppler shift. Turn off the horn sounds with the F2 button, and the locomotive sounds will return to normal within a few seconds. Squealing brakes (F7) Squealing brakes come on automatically when the speed is reduced from high-speed travel (35 smph) to almost stopping (less than 10 smph). However, pressing the F7 button when the locomotive is moving at any speed will manually activate squealing brake sound and pressing F7 repeatedly will extend brake sounds to imitate tight curves or long stops. The F7 button can be pressed any number of times while the squealing occurs to continue the brake sounds. If you slow the locomotive too quickly, the brake sounds will terminate abruptly when the locomotive enters neutral. 17

18 Running your locomotive in the DCC Adjusting the diesel engine cooling fans (F4) The locomotive allows independent control of the fan using the associated function button. Once you adjust this setting, the feature will no longer have automatic operation, and you will control its operation and state with the function button. Refer to Table 4 for the diesel fan settings. Diesel fans sounds operation Using the F4 button, you can change the state of the diesel fans in addition to taking control of the feature. For instance, if the fans are functioning automatically, pressing the F4 button will toggle the fans to off, and they will stay off while you operate the locomotive. Automatic operation will be restored if the power is shut down and reapplied or if the F6 (Start Up) button is pressed two times while the locomotive is in neutral. Refer to the Start-up section on page

19 Running your locomotive in the DCC Shutting down your locomotive (F9) Locomotive Shut Down has three distinct stages, all controlled by the operator. Each stage is entered by pressing the F9 button two times. The F9 button must be pressed two times within two seconds. If power is turned off during any stage of the shutdown sequence, the locomotive will remember the last stage it was at prior to the shutdown, and will power up in the same stage. If Start Up is initiated during any of the above Shut Down procedures, Shut Down is aborted and the locomotive returns to normal operation. The F9 button may have to be pressed three times the first time you use it due to the command station and locomotive having different initial states for F9. Stage One: Disconnect If you press the F9 button two times while the locomotive is in neutral, the motor drive will be disconnected from the QSI Quantum Sound system. You will hear a long air release after entering the disconnect stage. Once in the disconnect stage, the throttle can be moved up and down without moving the locomotive; instead, you will hear the sound of the diesel engine revving up or down. All function buttons are active in the disconnect stage. To leave disconnect stage, press the F6 (Start Up) button two times. DCC Ops Mode Programming is possible in the first stage only. Stage Two: Stand-by Press the F9 button two times while the locomotive is in the disconnect stage to enter the standby stage. In stand-by stage, the locomotive will not respond to throttle or function buttons, except for the F6 (Start Up) button. You will hear a long air release followed by directional lighting shut down. The motor will remain disconnected, and the air pump sounds will remain on. Stage Three: Final shutdown If you press the F9 button two times while in the stand-by stage, the locomotive will completely shut down. Finally, you will hear the engineer s door opening and shutting. While the locomotive is going through the final stage of the of the shutdown process, the locomotive will not respond to throttle or function buttons, except for the F6 (Start Up) button. 19

20 Running your locomotive in the DCC Start up (F6) If your locomotive is in any of the shutdown stages, you can return your locomotive to normal operation by pressing the F6 button two times. Start Up will be different for each stage of shutdown; however, all start up sequences commence with a long air release sound before returning to normal operation. If the throttle is turned up from zero during any of the above Start Up procedures, the Start Up procedure will terminate, and the locomotive will enter normal operation. Start Up from disconnect If you press the F6 button two times while the locomotive is in the disconnect stage, the locomotive will produce a long air let-off sound and enter normal operation. Start Up from stand-by If you press the F6 button two times while the locomotive is in stand-by, the locomotive will produce a long air let-off sound, the Directional Lighting will turn on, and then the locomotive will enter normal operation. Start Up from complete shutdown If you press the F6 button two times while the locomotive is in the final stage of shutdown, the locomotive will produce a long air let-off sound, the generator sounds commence while the headlight comes on gradually and the cab lights turn on. After the pumps sounds turn on, the locomotive will enter normal operation. During the Start Up procedure, none of the function buttons are active. Neutral sounds Some function buttons used in forward and reverse will have different effects in neutral. Except for HORN and BELL, if a neutral sound is occurring when you press one of the function buttons, it will start the effect associated with that button and will terminate the effect that was previously playing. The F7 button produces brake squeal for a moving locomotive, but activates the turbine start-up (if in Diesel) or the Diesel start-up (if in turbine). The F6 button produces the Doppler shift for a moving locomotive, but activates air release when in neutral. 20

21 Programming your locomotive in the DCC DCC programming Most command stations currently available will program Quantum-equipped locomotives in Service of Ops mode. If your command station will not program in Service Mode, check for an upgrade from the command station manufacturer. Configuration Variables (CV) are explained in greater detail in the National Model Railroading Association (NMRA) publication, DCC Recommended Practices RP This document is available online at Changing the system volume electronically in CV 51.0 You can change the volume either manually as described in the Special Operation and Trouble Shooting section or electronically using QSI CV 51.0 in DCC. Follow these steps to change volume in Service or Ops Mode. 1. Enter 0 in CV 49. In Ops Mode, the value will be spoken out. 2. Enter the system volume in CV 51. The System Volume can be set to any value between 0 (no sound) and 127 (100%). The default Operations Mode Volume is 127. When you change the System Volume, you will immediately notice the change in volume in Ops Mode. Enable/disable Doppler shift from horn signal interrupt (CV 51.2) Follow these steps to turn off the automatic Doppler shift from a horn signal interrupt. 1. Set CV 49 to Set CV 51 to 0 to disable horn-triggered Doppler or set CV 51 to 1 to enable horn-triggered Doppler. 21

22 Programming your locomotive in the DCC Changing individual sound volumes (CV 52.X) To change the volume of individual sounds listed in the table below: Set CV 49 to the Primary Index for the individual sound from the Table 5 below. Enter Volume level in CV 52 as follows: 0 for No Sound; 1 15 to set the volume from the lowest value at 1, the highest volume at 15. The volume levels are in 2db increments. 23 Programming your locomotive in the DCC Special ID programming (CV ) If you cannot program your ID number in Service Mode and your command station prevents you from changing your ID in Ops Mode using CV 1, CV 17 and CV 18, use the following alternative procedure to program your locomotive ID numbers. Entering short (primary) address in CV in Ops mode 1. Set CV 49 to Set CV 50 to Set CV 56 to your short address. Hear the address spoken back. 4. Change CV 29, bit 5 to 0 (or set CV 29 to 2 which is factory default) to enable your new primary address. Entering your long (extended) address in CV in Ops mode 1. Determine the value of CV 17 and CV 18 for your locomotive s extended address from Table 6 below. 2. Set CV 49 to Set CV 50 to Enter CV 17 into CV 56. There will be no verbal response. 5. Set CV 50 to Enter CV 18 into CV 56. Hear the new full address spoken out. 7. Change CV 29, bit 5 to 1 (or set CV 29 to 34) to allow operation with your new extended address. Set CV 56 to: 0 for Standard Throttle Control; 1 for Speed Control and 2 for Regulated Throttle Control. CV 2, CV 5, and speed tables are available for Standard and Regulated Throttle Control, but inactive for Speed Control. RTC has a minimum speed of 1 smph at speed step 1. Disable/enable verbal announcements (CV 62) In Ops mode, Quantum will automatically speak out the value of CV you enter. To disable set CV 62 to 0, to enable set CV 62 to 1. Default is enabled. 24

25 Programming your locomotive in the DCC CV Inquiry with verbal feedback in Ops mode (CV 64) To inquire about the current value of any CV through Verbal Feedback in Ops Mode, enter the CV number in CV 64. Hear the verbal message CV X equals Y, where X is the CV number and Y is the value. If the CV has a Primary Index such as QSI CV nn.mm (where nn is the CV number and m is the Primary Index), mm must be entered in CV 49 before you enter the CV number, nn, in CV 64. So if you want to inquire about the contents of CV 56.4, enter 4 into CV 49 and enter 56 into CV 64. You will hear, CV five six point four equals Y ( Y is the present value). If you enter either 17 or 18 in CV 64, you will hear the full extended ID number. NMRA Configuration Values (CV 29) Each bit in CV 29 controls some basic operational settings for DCC decoders, including Extended Addressing, Speed Table Enable, Power Source Conversion, Lighting Operation, Locomotive Direction, and others. Table 7 provides some of the more common values for CV 29 for the features indicated. 26 Special Operation and Troubleshooting Doppler effect With some Command Stations, simultaneously pressing the HORN and F6 buttons will cause the horn to shut off instead of causing a Doppler shift effect. If you experience intermittent and independent horn signal interruption or unexpected Doppler shifts, you may choose to disable the automatic Doppler shift (CV 51.2). Manual volume adjustment Volume can be adjusted manually using the volume control in the tender, or digitally using the programming methods described in the programming sections of this manual. Follow these steps to adjust the volume. 1. Remove the roof-top hatch by pulling it straight up from the locomotive s roof. Refer to Figure Using the included volume control tool, turn the manual volume control clockwise to increase volume, counterclockwise to decrease the volume. 27 Special Operation and Troubleshooting High voltage circuit breaker Your locomotive is designed to operate on normal HO track voltage supplied by most HO power packs. If track voltage exceeds 21.5 volts peak, the motor drive circuit will automatically shut down and the locomotive will coast to a stop, while the Quantum system alerts you to the problem through a continuous series of horn blasts. This built-in safety feature protects the Quantum system and motor from excessive voltage. To restart your locomotive, reduce the track voltage until the horn blasts stop and the motor re-engages. Program track operation Your locomotive conforms to NMRA standards for program track operation. However, the Quantum Sound system requires more power to operate than many standard decoders provide, limiting your locomotive s response to the program track power from many command stations. If your program track will not respond properly, all CV s in your Challenger can be programmed in Ops mode. Using the reset jumper block to return your locomotive to factory default values If you experience abnormal sound and control system operations, simply turn off the power for 15 seconds. If operation does not return to normal, follow these steps to reset your locomotive to original factory settings. The switch is located under the roof-top hatch on the locomotive. 1. Turn off track power. 2. Remove the roof-top hatch and pull up the reset jumper using a pair of needle-nose pliers. 3. Place the tender on the track and restore power. After a few seconds, the horn will respond with a series of three blasts. 4. Turn off track power and replace the jumper and roof-top hatch Jumper Block Figure 3. Switch location 27

28 Special Operation and Troubleshooting Lubricating your locomotive Help your Lionel locomotive lead a long and productive life on your railroad by maintaining it properly. We recommend that you purchase a Lionel Lubrication and Maintenance Kit ( ), available from your Lionel dealer. Two basic rules to keep in mind: never over-lubricate (a small amount will do), and avoid getting grease or oil on the locomotive wheels, contact rollers, or your track. You ll know your locomotive requires lubrication when visual inspection reveals dryness on the parts indicated in Figure 4. Remove accumulated dirt and dust before lubricating, and always lubricate any locomotive emerging from prolonged storage. 29 Special Operation and Troubleshooting Reasons why your locomotive is silent or will not start In case your locomotive remains silent after power up and turning the power off for 15 seconds does not return it to normal operation, you will need to check the following points to bring your locomotive back to normal sound operation. To simulate the operation of the prototype, your locomotive will have a maximum speed of 25 smph under Speed Control or Regulated Throttle Control in diesel mode. Make sure you are using the correct ID number. Make sure the locomotive has not been muted with the F8 button. Check to see if your volume potentiometer or digital sound has been turned all the way down. Bring the locomotive out of Shut Down by performing a Start Up operation. If you cannot start your locomotive in Analog, you may have shut your locomotive down in DCC using the F9 button. Go back to DCC operation and start your locomotive with the F6 button. Once started, you can return to DCC operation. If the above methods do not start your locomotive, use the reset jumper to initialize your locomotive to factory default values. 29
