2 THE FACTS Vehicle-related theft has fallen by 51 per cent since 1997, according to the authoritative British Crime Survey (BCS) 2005/06. The risk of having your vehicle stolen is very low about once every 107 years. This Car Theft Index shows that older cars are at the highest risk of being stolen. Cars more than nine years old account for nearly two-thirds of all cars stolen. New cars are at least risk of being stolen those aged 0 3 years old account for less than 11 per cent of stolen cars. Sophisticated security measures now fitted as standard to new cars mean some criminals are turning to other methods to steal vehicles (for example taking the keys). BCS results also show that cars are far less likely to be stolen if they have a car alarm or some kind of immobiliser. A consistent finding of the BCS is that around 68 per cent of vehicle crimes occur near the home. The street outside the home is where the highest volume of incidents occurs 43 per cent in the 2005/06 BCS. The clear message to motorists is to remember to remove all possessions from their cars when they park them at or near home, particularly at night. 2

3 THE 2006 CAR THEFT INDEX ALSO SHOWS THAT In ,531 cars were stolen in England, Scotland and Wales. This is 38,394 fewer thefts than in People Carriers and 4x4s had the least risk of theft, with only four stolen per 1,000 registered. Large saloons and luxury saloons had the next lowest risk of theft, with six stolen per 1,000 registered. The car with the overall highest risk of theft in 2005 was the Vauxhall Belmont, with 76 stolen per 1,000 registered. Cars that were between 12 and 14 years old (registered between 1991 and 1993) faced the greatest risk of being stolen, with a theft rate of 22 cars per 1,000 registered. Cars registered between 2003 and 2005 had the lowest rates of theft, with three stolen per 1,000 registered. HOW TO USE THE CAR THEFT INDEX The Car Theft Index shows which makes and models of car are most at risk of being stolen in England, Scotland and Wales, but does not attempt to highlight regional trends. It is based on 2005 theft data taken from the Police National Computer (PNC) and on information provided by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) on the number of cars on the road. Not all models of car are included in the index. Only those with sufficient numbers on the road to provide statistically reliable results are shown. The left-hand side of each table lists the makes and models of cars included in the index in alphabetical order. To see whether a particular car is at most risk, medium risk or lower risk of theft, read along the line to the right until you find the column showing the year in which the car was first registered. 3

4 For cars stolen in 2005, therefore, the risk of theft is colour-coded as shown on the right. White blocks are used where a particular make/model of car was not available in the years shown. Grey blocks are used where there are too few cars of that type on the road for an accurate risk assessment to be made. In some cases, a number of different models/ variants have been grouped together in order to have sufficient numbers of cars on the road to allow theft risks to be calculated. In these cases, the risk calculations apply only to these cars as a group and not necessarily to the individual members of the group. Most at risk More than 13 cars in every 1,000 on the road stolen, and at least four times more at risk of theft than the lowest risk cars. Medium risk Between 3 and 13 cars in every 1,000 on the road stolen. INSURANCE GROUPS The risk of theft in this index will not necessarily match the insurance rating for a given car as the insurance rating also takes a vehicle s accident repair costs into account. Individual insurance premiums also depend upon other factors such as a driver s history and the area they live in. The insurance industry has turned the assessments that give a car its insurance group into a five-star rating for that car s ability to prevent criminals stealing it or stealing from it. 5 WHAT TO DO NEXT Following the advice below will reduce your chance of being a victim of vehicle theft: Secure the doors, windows, boot and sunroof every time you leave the car. Get an electronic immobiliser professionally fitted by a member of the Vehicle Systems Installation Board (VSIB) if your car has not already got one. You might also consider getting an alarm fitted. But in each case make sure you buy a product that is either Thatcham compliant or Sold Secure approved. Remember, some security devices may get you a discount on your insurance check with your insurer. If you do not have an electronic immobiliser fitted, use a mechanical immobiliser such as a steering wheel lock every time you leave your car. Again, make sure it is Thatcham compliant or Sold Secure approved. Mechanical immobilisers are a relatively inexpensive alternative to electronic immobilisers, but remember to use it every time you leave your car. Fit locking wheel nuts, as wheels are often a target for car thieves. Wheel nuts are not expensive and are easy to fit. 5

6 Never leave things on show in your car. If you have to leave briefcases and other items in your car, put them out of sight before you start your journey. If you have fitted satellite navigation equipment, as well as removing it also hide the cradle and wipe the suction pad mark from the windscreen. Try to look for a public car park that is part of the police approved Safer Parking Scheme and displays the Park Mark sign. For further information and the location of your nearest safer car park go to With good security, particularly on newer cars, obtaining the keys may be the only way a thief can steal it. Always take good care of them. Hide a spare set away in your home and never leave them by the front door or a window. Have the car registration number etched onto all glass surfaces, including the headlamps, as this could help recover the car if it is stolen. 7 BUYING A USED CAR When buying a second-hand car, think about the security features. Also, you should check to make sure that the car you are thinking of buying has not been stolen. Although it is not usually a problem to buy a used car, it is always worth following the advice below. Consider checking with one of several private companies that hold information on vehicles whether it has been reported as stolen, seriously damaged or is still subject to finance. Details can be found at motoring/buyingandsellingavehicle. Check that the car s vehicle identification number (VIN), including any etched onto the glass surfaces, match the one on the documents. Do not buy the car if the seller cannot produce the vehicle registration document. 7

8 SELLING A CAR When selling your car it is worth remembering that thieves can pose as potential buyers. Never let the buyer go on a test drive alone. They may not come back. Don t leave the buyer alone with your keys in the ignition. Be careful about accepting cheques or banker s drafts. If they are fraudulent or counterfeit you will lose the money.
