The foundation of portable power the battery found its earliest and most popular use powering a device invented shortly after the battery the handheld flashlight. It began in 1898 when Conrad Hubert, a Russian immigrant, lit up New York City with the introduction of the newly patented handheld flashlight. Soon afterward, Hubert began manufacturing flashlights, batteries and light bulbs under the name Ever Ready and now more than 110 years later, Energizer is still the innovative leader in portable lighting technology. Hubert s first portable flashlights were handmade using a dry cell battery, bulb and rough brass reflector inside a paper tube. Putting these flashlights to work in the hands of New York City policemen resulted in high visibility and nearly instantaneous success for his product. Over the years, emerging bulb and battery technology helped Eveready Battery Company move forward in flashlight development introducing the tungsten bulb, improving switches and developing spotlights to project light forward. Changes in case construction, lenses and endcaps all kept Eveready at the forefront of the portable lighting industry as well, and proved overwhelmingly useful for outdoorsmen, engineers, construction workers, policemen, military personnel, and miners. In 1982 flashlight and battery technology took a substantial step forward with the opening of our Westlake, Ohio, research and development center, one of the industry s largest. Since that time we have been dedicated to developing brighter lights, extending run times, engineering rugged housings, advancing battery performance and increasing functionality of lights for the many and varied demands of today s users. Our name changed in April 2000 to reflect our commitment to portable power, and Eveready Battery Company officially became Energizer Holdings, Inc. With a very bright white light, rugged durability and resistance to vibration and shock, their energy efficiency and multicolor (blue, green, red, amber, ultraviolet, Infrared and white) options make them the #1 choice for critical lighting situations in military, professional and outdoor situations. Energizer s strategic partnerships with Cree, Lumiled and Nichia the leaders in LED innovation ensure that we have access to the most advanced technology available in the marketplace. Circuitry To meet the challenge of portable power needs in extreme conditions, Energizer uses microprocessors (literally on-board computers) to optimize the performance of our lighting products within 80% to 90% efficiency. Optics Energizer utilizes the finest optics available today in lensing and reflectors durable, lightweight, acrylic material, convex/concave design for greater focus options, precision micro lens patterns for optimal light diffusion and high-efficiency reflectors with precise faceting for a uniform beam profile. Construction Energizer uses high-quality magnesium alloys, aircraftgrade aluminum and advanced polymers (ABS plastic, polycarbonate and epoxy glass) that allow our lights to carry a smaller footprint while being highly resistant to damage from impact. To reduce heat produced by LEDs, advanced patent-pending cooling fins are built into the magnesium alloy casings to efficiently disperse heat. 6 Clarity for the Lighting Industry We Lead the Way Evolving, high tech flashlights will now have standard performance measurements to ensure clear features communication and a basis for product-to-product comparison! Until now, there has been no consistency in how flashlight features and benefits were presented; consumers might see a flashlight that claims light output of 3,000,000 candlepower next to one that claims 40 lumens. For the average consumer, these inconsistencies have led to confusion and an inability to truly compare one product to another. The Flashlight Standards Committee has just published an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard designed to help the consumer. The FL1 standard addresses six performance measurements to improve consistency and clarity for flashlight consumers. Consumers and the trade have been left in the dark to figure out the difference between candlepower, candela and lumens, among other inconsistent flashlight claims, which left everyone guessing about how to compare one light to another, said Peter Nario-Redmond, Technical Marketing Manager for Energizer and chairman of the Flashlight Standards Committee.
