Students who require equipment to transport all have an IEP-Individual Education Program. It s designed to meet a child s unique education needs. This impacts transportation we have to accommodate the student according to the 504 plan which requires school districts to provide specialized transportation services to students who is not in special education. 3

We transport wheel chairs that are WC-19 compliant meaning they have been crashed tested and are safe for traveling in a vehicle. This particular chair has wheel chair transport options already installed to show how and where to place securements. If the transport options are not on the chair, then the driver would have to place the securements on a welded spot, which is the strongest part on the chair. 4

Now that we have secured the chair to the floor, we must now secure the child with our lap shoulder harness system. This is an extra added security for our students for safe transportation. 5

A WC19-compliant wheelchair has features that make it easier to secure with 4- point strap-type tie downs. A WC19 wheelchair is designed so that the person securing straps can do so easily and with one hand. The wheelchair has also passed a standardized crash or sled test, and has survived with little or no structural damage. Wheelchairs that have passed standardized tests have proven their ability to withstand the forces of a 30-mph/20-g change in velocity the same crash pulse that all automotive equipment must survive. 6

Students Wheelchairs that are not WC19-compliant have not been tested as to their performance when used as seats in moving vehicles. Collapsible wheel chair or wheel chairs that fold are not safe to transport in vehicles or buses. Therefore we do not transport these types wheel chairs with students riding in them. However, we can let the student ride the chair on the lift, but they have to be able to walk to a seat on the bus. And we then secure the chair. Our next video will explain why we don t transport collapsible wheel chairs. 7

8

Our class instructors teach the new trainees how to secure all the equipment, they are given a demonstration and then given the opportunity to secure them on their own. The instructors sign off on each trainee after completing each type of equipment. 9

These are rear facing car seats, they hold up to 0-22lbs, and it must be at a 90 degree angle in order for the baby s airway to be open. This will ensure the airway is clear, due to the baby not having the ability to hold their head up for lack of neck control. OCPS provides all of the car seats for our student, they have been crash tested and are safe for travel. We keep the car seats for 5 years after which they are discarded due to the damage from the sun and cool weather, the plastic looses durability. 10

This is a forward facing car seat, this particular seat children who weigh between 22-40lbs and are over 1 year to legally face forward in a vehicle. Theses will be your pre-k and some kindergarten students, and the chest straps adds upper trunk control. 11

(CSRS)- child safety restraint system. The star/bessie seat holds children who weigh between 20-90lbs. This also helps support a child s upper torso. We have to ensure it s suitable for their weigh and age. 12

These arm restraints are used to provide additional safety for the student. This is usually in addition to the safety vest. 13

Safety vests are apart of the CSRS. It s for the safety of the student who pose a hazard. Etc. standing, walking on the bus, constantly getting our of their seats. They are three sizes of vest blue-small, burgundy-medium, black-large. We also can special order vest for students who may not be able to fit the sizes we have. We want to ensure the vest fits properly, especially around the waist, it must not fit too high on the waist because it can cause internal injury in a crash. 14

The trainers are ensuring the trainees are able to assemble a safety vest correctly. 15

Lap belts are also apart of our safety equipment. Although they are on the bus, the students are not required to wear them. But we must state there are seatbelts in the seat, please use them daily, for added safety to the students. However, if the student s IEP requires them to use lap restraints, then they must use them. 16

Remember that each student is an individual. While they may have similar characteristics, respect their uniqueness. We are the village raising our future leaders of tomorrow. 17
