9 Introduction Parker Hannifin s icountbs represents the most up-to-date technology in solid particle contamination analysis. The icountbs is a compact, durable, lightweight integrated laserbased particle detector module that provides a cost-effective solution to fluid management and contamination control. Principles of operation The icountbs measures particle contamination via a sample bottle or on line. The sampling interval can be defined by the user so that measurements may be taken as often as required. In contrast to other Parker particle counters (such as the CM20, LCM20, ACM20 or MCM20), the icountbs allows you to set the volume of the test sample and the number of measurements taken for each bottle sample. The results are reported immediately, but also stored in the unit s internal memory and may be downloaded later for analysis by third-party applications (such as Microsoft Excel). The icountbs has high levels of controlled accuracy, stability and sensitivity. Servicing and calibration Please refer to the Parker Hannifin Quality and Servicing booklet (FDCB272UK), supplied on CD. NOTE: Any servicing or repair work must be carried out by a Parker approved service centre. Contact your local Parker Hannifin Sales Company for recalibration details. The recommended period between recalibration is 12 months. NOTE: Do not dispose of the original packaging, as this is required to return the icountbs to the Condition Monitoring Service Centre safely for recalibration and servicing. icountbs Bottle Sampler Manual 9

32 Preparation guidelines for testing The icountbs has been designed to reduce to a minimum effects that can make condition monitoring inaccurate or unreliable by eliminating many of the variables associated with contamination monitoring. Variation caused by different amounts of entrapped gas is suppressed by pressurising the sample with cleaned air. The analysis tube is supplied with an accurate amount of oil, through a fixed displacement pumping system, and the test method is closely controlled, removing other variables which could occur with bottle sampling. Unfortunately, there are other factors that are beyond the ability of the measuring device to control. These external factors, if carefully considered, can be controlled within strict limits so that sampling errors are minimized. These are categorised as: The effect of system conditions Fluid sample extraction Sample handling and preparation. In most instances, the adoption of simple controlled procedures will result in reliable trend monitoring. The effect of system conditions SYSTEM FLOW RATE Samples are best taken from a point in the system where the flow is turbulent (i.e. with a Reynolds Number greater than 4000). The turbulent flow creates a mixing action. Where the flow is streamlined or laminar, larger particulate may tend to settle toward the lower pipe surface and not be sampled. SYSTEM CONDITION CHANGES Changes in the system operating condition, flow, temperature, pressure or vibration can result in previously sedimented contaminant being retained into the flowing oil. It is also possible that these changes may cause partially contaminated filter elements to shed particulates into the system. Samples should therefore be extracted when the system is in a steady state condition: the result is less likely to be distorted by contaminant peaks. TAKING A SAMPLE Extract a sample while the system is operating under consistently controlled conditions. Adopt a consistent technique. Spill off at least 200ml of fluid to flush the sampling port of residual contaminant. Leave the bottle capped until you are ready to extract the sample. Fill the bottle to approximately 80% and cap immediately after extracting the sample. Fluid sample extraction FLOW RATE Variations in the sampling flow rate may affect the result from bottle samples. The flow rate through a sampling port from an operating hydraulic system will vary according to the system pressure, the port restriction and fluid viscosity. For accurate trend monitoring, it is necessary to maintain these conditions consistently when extracting Bottle Samples. SAMPLING VALVES There are a number of proprietary sampling valves available, which adhere to good theoretical principles. However, their high cost and precision is probably unnecessary for trend monitoring. SAMPLING POINTS Sampling points should enable extraction of a sample without changing the system s condition. Fine control needle valves are not desirable, as they have a tendency to silt up under some operating conditions, causing the distribution of contaminants in the fluid to be changed. The sampling port should however be protected to maintain cleanliness and thoroughly flushed before collecting the sample for analysis. 32 Parker Hannifin Manufacturing (UK) Ltd

33 Sample handling and preparation BOTTLE CLEANLINESS Bottles should have sealing screw caps, with both parts cleaned to a suitable level in accordance with ISO3722. Standard Parker Hannifin bottles (ACC6NW001 (2-pack) and ACC6NW002 (50-pack)) are supplied clean to ISO 13/11 or better in a Class 10,000 Clean Room. The bottle should remain capped until the time of sample filling and be re-capped immediately afterwards. SAMPLE MIXING Sedimentation of contaminant in a sample will occur, the rate of which is dependent upon both the fluid and particle characteristics. Visually check the fluid sample for any large particles before testing by holding up to a light source. If you can see large contaminants, you may want to reconsider if the sample is suitable for testing by the icountbs. Other methods of sample agitation have not been provided, as they are likely to inconsistently distort the analysis of results. Where facilities are available, mixing can be achieved using paint shakers and/or an ultrasonic bath. Take care when using ultrasonic baths to avoid distortion of the result by prolonged use, which could cause the breakdown of contaminants. Bottle samples can be sufficiently stirred by swirling and tumbling by hand, end-over-end. Samples should be analysed, without delay, once agitated. NOTE: Air bubbles are counted as contamination and may affect test results. High viscosity fluids may take longer to degas. For further information, please contact Parker Hannifin Manufacturing (UK) Ltd. RESULTS The first result from a bottle sample should be disregarded, as it could be distorted by fluid from a previous sample. Samples from different parts of a system will give different results. Consideration should be given to what monitoring is desired and where to extract samples from for trend monitoring to be performed. Ensure that there is a minimum of 30ml of sample fluid left in the bottle at the end of the test to avoid any air being drawn into the icountbs system. If this minimum level has not been maintained, please flush through with a new sample of at least 50ml. NOTE: If there is a spillage of test fluids in the chamber, please clean the icountbs with a clean lint-free cloth, with any appropriate cleaning fluids being applied to the cloth. It is important that whatever practices you adopt, you must perform them consistently. icountbs Bottle Sampler Manual 33

55 Fitting a replacement door seal Parts required ACC6NW016 Door Seal Kit Tools required Isopropanol (also known as IPA, isopropyl alcohol, propan-2-ol) Silicone grease compound Small brush Torch Gloves (latex or similar). Procedure 1 2 Open door and remove door seal. Use isopropanol to clean the inside of the channel and the inside of the door, removing all traces of silicone grease. Using a syringe, apply silicone grease compound to the base of the channel. DO NOT apply this to the side walls of the channel. Use a brush to apply this evenly over the entire base of the channel. icountbs Bottle Sampler Manual 55

56 3 4 Insert the new O-ring from the top. Ensure that it is fitted so that the moulding split line is not on a mating face. Apply a small amount of silicone grease to a gloved thumb and feed the O-ring in evenly. Coat the whole of the O-ring evenly and then close the door. Using the torch, inspect the inner face of the door to ensure that there is an even witness mark on the machined surface. Any gaps that are present will be paths for air to escape. It may be necessary to re-fit the O-ring to get a good seal. 56 Parker Hannifin Manufacturing (UK) Ltd

57 Recalibration and servicing Parker recommends: Re-calibration every 12 months Servicing every 12 months CAUTION: Please contact Parker Hannifin Manufacturing (UK) Ltd if you require further advice on how to have your unit Calibrated or Serviced. Please do not dispose of the packing and return the IcountBS in its original case for any service, calibration or warranty claims.
