14 Ask a mobility scooter owner and it s likely they will admit that they mainly used their car for local trips. Mobility Scooters are a much cheaper alternative to a car, there are no petrol and minimal maintenance costs. What s more it only costs a few cents a day to recharge the average mobility scooter. Many people are regaining their independence and mobility by purchasing a mobility scooter from Medical and Mobility Warehouse, so why not join them! Some points to consider: The first and most important consideration should be the safety of the mobility scooter driver and whether or not they have the necessary balance, vision and reflexes required to drive a mobility scooter safely. A consultation with your GP is always advisable before purchasing a mobility scooter. The second consideration should be the weight and size of the scooter user. All mobility scooters have a Safe working Load (SWL) and exceeding this SWL can result in damage to the scooter, void your warranty and make the scooter unsafe to operate. The third consideration should be where the scooter will be used. Smaller scooters can usually be easily dismantled for portability and are an excellent choice for use at the shopping centre or indoors. Longer trips in the outdoors usually require a more robust and larger scooter with larger wheels, better ground clearance, bigger batteries and a more powerful motor for hill climbs etc. A medium or large scooter is best suited for longer, more demanding journeys. Some models are capable of covering up to 50km between recharges and even come with independent suspension for a smoother ride. Remember that when you are driving your scooter, the law determines you to be pedestrian and as such you need to be aware of and obey the road rules covering pedestrians. Mobility Scooter Registration: Queensland Transport requires a mobility scooter or motorised wheelchair used by a person with a disability on a road, or footpath, to be registered. But here s the good news It is free, if you can provide Queensland Transport with a certificate/statement/ letter from either a medical practitioner, a registered occupational therapist or a registered physiotherapist confirming that due to a physical or medical condition the person s mobility is severely impaired and they require the use of a motorised wheelchair for assisted travel. We will provide you with an invoice showing the serial number, make and model of your new mobility scooter, so you can easily apply for registration of your scooter with Queensland Transport. 14

15 Frequently Asked Questions: Q:Do I need a licence to drive a mobility scooter? A: No. A mobility scooter driver is not required to be licenced. How ever you will need to have the necessary physical and cognitive skills to operate and maneuver a mobility scooter safely. An occupational therapist or doctor can help assess a potential scooter buyers abilities, but here is a list of attributes you will need: Enough hand strength and movement to use the controls and steer the scooter. You also need to be able to turn your head to look to the side and behind you. Balance when driving the scooter on bumpy or rough ground, plus the ability to sit for long periods and move the position of your body when going up and down inclines. Sufficient vision and hearing to notice vehicles and pedestrians approaching, and to judge distances. The ability to concentrate for the entire period you are operating the scooter and to react quickly enough to stop and turn suddenly if necessary. You will also Q:Does a Mobility Scooter have to be registered? A: Yes. It is compulsory to register your mobility scooter in Queensland if you intend to drive it on the footpath, to cross roads or drive on the side of the road where the footpath is unsuitable.
