Congratulations! Congratulations on your purchase of this Lionel 21" StationSounds Diner Car! From the conductor s all board to the clinking of glassware, your new Legacy StationSounds diner car adds the dimension of sound to your passenger train experience. This LEGACY version is based on the earlier TMCC product and adds new features. It operates in conventional mode (limited features), with a CAB-1L/CAB1 (more features) and with a CAB2 remote (full functionality). Enhancements from previous sound equipped products include: 1. Every dialog scene includes new background sounds as passengers walk through the station, settle into their seats or eat and drink. 2. Freight Sounds, which uses most of the wheel and track sounds featured in the VISION sound car products (the flat wheel effect is not included in this product). The following Lionel marks are used throughout this Owner s Manual and are protected under law. All rights reserved. 4 StationSounds Diner Car basics Power your diner car with an alternating-current (50-60Hz AC) transformer only. Powering your car with a direct-current (DC) transformer, or in excess of 19 volts AC, may result in damage to sensitive electronic components. Your diner car requires Lionel or Lionel-compatible O-54 or larger track curves. StationSounds Diner car switch locations This sound equipped StationSounds Diner car contains RailSounds programming switches. Refer to Figure 1. The instructions below are specific to this particular StationSounds car; note that available features (and switches) may differ from other sound equipped cars and rolling stock. Run / Program Switch Your diner car is automatically assigned an ID#1 when you first receive it. Assign it a new ID different from the locomotive pulling it (refer to your locomotive manual for its startup operations). To assign a new ID # to the diner car in LEGACY and Command operation follow these steps: 1. Slide the Program/Run switch to the PROG position. 2. Place the diner car on the track. 3. Connect the Command Base and plug it in. 4. Power up the track to 18 Volts AC (50 or 60 Hz). 5. Press ENG on your CAB controller. 6. Enter an unique ID#. Choose any number from 1 to 98 that has not been assigned to another engine or RailSounds car. 7. Press the SET button on your CAB controller. 8. Slide the Program/Run switch back to the RUN position. The diner car s ID# has been set. Be sure to record the new ID# for your reference. Max / Min Switch Used to make the sound, simulating the scraping and banging of the contents of the reefer car, less or more active. When the switch is in the MIN position, the dialog and some background motion sounds will turn off. This allows you to put more than one sound-equipped diner car on the same ID. To do this, set one car to MAX and then trigger loading/unloading. Sound effects will come from all cars; however dialog will only come from one. Volume Pot To adjust the overall volume of sounds, flip the car upside down, as shown in Figure 1, insert a small Flathead screwdriver into the Volume Pot adjustment post and turn. To increase the volume, turn the post clockwise. To decrease the volume, turn the post counter-clockwise. Your CAB-remote can also adjust volume; the setting of this physical control will limit the maximum volume your diner car can produce. 4

LEGACY Control operations Your StationSounds Diner car is designed for operation with the Lionel LEGACY system. It will also operate on the original Lionel Trainmaster System (TMCC1) with limited features and also on the LEGACY Cab-1L / Base-1L operating system (again with reduced features.) Using a Lionel LEGACY set ( ) will allow you to access ALL the features this diner car has to offer. Your commands are sent by the Remote Controller to the Command Base, which broadcasts a radio frequency that is distributed through the outside rails of the track to your sound equipped diner car. Moving your train after you power up your track will turn the sounds on. 1. Turn off track power, and then plug in the LEGACY Base and connect it to the track. 2. Place your diner car on the track. 3. Increase track power (no more than 18 volts AC). If a circuit breaker trips when you turn on the Lionel power supply, check the wheels of your diner car to make sure they are all securely on the track. Check to make sure the track is free of all metals that may cause a short circuit. 4. Moving your train with the attached diner car after powering up the track automatically turns on the sound. If you send the StationSounds car (or the Train of which is assigned) a shutdown command, this will prevent the car from making sounds simply because it is moving. In this case, send a startup command to the train or engine address and your StationSounds car will begin making sound again. 6

Choosing an ID for your StationSounds Diner car The StationSounds Diner car must be given a unique Engine ID. Use the Program / Run switch and follow the instructions on Page 4. Setting it to the same LEGACY or TMCC ID as the locomotive pulling it will result in undesired operation. Once a unique ID is set, the diner car should be assigned to a train along with your locomotive. If you have more than one StationSounds Diner car, for best results set them all to unique ID s. You may also choose to set them all to the same ID. In this case, set one diner car s min/max switch to the MAX position (see page 5) and all others to MIN. It is not recommend to set the TMCC ID of the StationSounds Diner car to the same TMCC ID as the locomotive, nor to assign it as a FRONT engine of the Train. Undesirable operation will result. 7

Setting up your StationSounds Diner car in your CAB-2 remote For best operation, your Diner car should be set to TYPE PASS (Passenger). This will display a special set of touch screen icons specifically designed for use with this type of car. LEGACY version 1.6 is required for optimum operation of your StationSounds Diner car. 1. Press ENG and the 1 or 2 digit TMCC ID you assigned to your diner car following the instructions on page 4 (Engine ID 57 has been assigned in the illustrations on this and following pages.) 2. Press INFO (see page 12 for button location). 3. Scroll the big red knob until you see the TYPE Tab (DSL STM DSW SSW) 4. Press the small black down-facing triangle to the right of SSW. This will scroll down through several pages of engine types. 5. The third page includes Accessory, Passenger, BreakDown B Unit and Freight (ACC PAS BDU FRT) 6. Choose PAS. Your screen should look like this: 7. Press INFO to complete the operation. If you have a SensorTrack, rolling the car over the track will automatically program your CAB-2 remote with the diner car s information. 8

Setting up your StationSounds Diner car in your CAB-2 remote continued Adding Your Diner car to a Train Use the Train Builder and create a train including your head-end locomotive and the StationSounds diner car. If you have followed the steps on the previous page, the diner car will automatically be added as a Train Linked device. Perform the following steps to build your train. 1. Press the TR button and enter a 1 or 2 digit number for your new train. (2, in this example) 2. Press the INFO button. Your screen will look like this: 3. Press BUILD. 4. Enter the TMCC ID of the locomotive that will head up this train. (2 in this example) 9

Setting up your StationSounds Diner car in your CAB-2 remote continued Adding Your Diner car to a Train 5. Press ADD to add a second member to the Train 6. Enter the TMCC ID of the passenger car (57 in this example). 7. Press SET and wait for the horn to sound on the head-end locomotive, a metallic "thwack" sound to come from your StationSounds Diner car and the "Ready to Run" message to appear on your CAB-2 screen. To move your locomotive, select the Train by its ID number and use the throttle, boost, and brake to run it. Apply your CAB-2 Train brake and hear the brakes operating on your StationSounds Diner car. For more prototypical action, stopping with the train brake applied (in any amount) will keep your rolling stock consist stretched-out and prevents stress on the coupler when starting. Your train simulates this effect. If you stop without using Train Brake, you ll hear the impact of your diner car hitting the coupler in front of it. And when you move the next time, you ll hear another impact sound as the coupler slack is taken up. 10

Setting up your StationSounds Diner car in your CAB-2 remote continued Using Train Link To send a command specifically to your Diner car, such as a coupler command or to trigger loading/ unloading, press the Train Link button (see page 12 for button location). Notice that the keypad has changed. It should appear like the screen below. DINER COMMANDS Select one or more commands then press the Train Link button to continue controlling your train. In order to send commands directly to your diner car, you must press Train Link. The remote will show the screen above. In this mode, the train itself (ie. the engine) will not respond because you are sending commands directly to the diner car. If you wish to control the train press Train Link again. In this mode you will be able to adjust speed, apply the train brake, access TowerCom and CrewTalk, blow the engine s horn or whistle, and ring the engine s bell. 11

TrainMaster Command Control (TMCC) operations For best operation, your StationSounds Diner car should be assigned to a Train. The following sections explain how to create a Train using a (blue) CAB-1L remote. Before proceeding, be sure you have assigned your diner car a unique ID following the instructions on page 4 of this manual. CAB-1/CAB-1L Train vs. Engine Addressing When using a CAB-1 or CAB-1L, you should primarily control your StationSounds Diner car via its TMCC engine ID. Assigning your StationSounds Diner car to the middle or rear position of a Train via a CAB-1-style remote will play BRAKE sounds from both the head-end locomotive and the StationSounds Diner car. However, the StationSounds Diner car is not intended to play dialog when addressed by CAB-1L in a Train. Instead, operate the head-end locomotive either as a Train or an Engine, and then directly address your StationSounds Diner car as an engine to trigger the various passenger scenes. It is not recommend to set the TMCC ID of the StationSounds Diner car to the same TMCC ID as the locomotive, nor to assign it as a FRONT engine of the Train. Undesirable operation will result. 13

Creating a Train with the CAB-1 or CAB-1L remote These examples show creating a train consisting of a single locomotive and single StationSounds Diner car. A train may include multiple locos or diner cars. Assign the head-end locomotive to the Train: 1. Be sure the StationSounds Diner car and the locomotive are on the track, powered up and operational. 2. Press the TR button and press two digits (from 01-99). This two-digit number will be the ID of your new train. Be sure to include a leading zero for Train ID s (Note: TMCC locomotives only support Train ID s 1-9.) 3. Enter the one or two digit TMCC ID of the head locomotive. 4. Press the F coupler button. This identifies the locomotive as the Front of the train. 5. Press the SET button, which is located under the plastic cover below your CAB- 1L s big red throttle knob. Listen for the locomotive to sound its whistle. Assign the StationSounds Diner car to the Train: 1. Press the TR button and press two digits (from 01-99). Use the same number you chose when assigning the head-end locomotive. 2. Enter the one or two digit TMCC ID of the Diner car. 3. Press the SET button, which is located under the plastic cover below your CAB-1L s big red throttle knob. Listen for the diner car to sound its reply (a metallic thwack. ) 14

Operating your StationSounds Diner Car with your CAB-1 or CAB-1L remote Running the Train 1. Press TR 2. Enter the train ID 3. Use throttle, boost and brake to move the train. The Brake button will cause brake squealing sounds to emanate from the StationSounds Diner car. Triggering Diner car scenarios 1. Press ENG 2. Enter the diner car ID 3. Press the CAB key for the feature you want to trigger (see page 16). 4. Press the TR button to return to Train operation. 15

CAB-1/CAB-1L Remote Controller commands The CAB-1 Remote Controller commands are detailed below. The corresponding RailSounds sound system effects are in bold italic type. Refer to your CAB-1 or CAB-1L manual for additional remote operations. Refer to your locomotive s manual for engine operations. Select Button <2> Conductor departure dialog (stopped). Starts the 5 scenarios (moving, see page 21). Select Button <7> Station PA departure dialog (stopped). Select Button <AUX 1><7> Station PA arrival dialog (stopped). Select Button <AUX 1><2> Conductor arrival dialog (stopped). Triggers next stop scene (moving). Select Bell No Sound Activation. Select Button <5> Shutdown while stopped. SET L M H Select Button <3> Re-start sounds after a shutdown command. 16

Adjusting the volume from your LEGACY remote In addition to the physical volume control on the underside of your StationSounds Diner car (see page 5), your remote can be used to adjust the overall volume, or just the volume of the background sounds (which include muffled bumping and banging as the car starts or changes speed, sharp grinding metallic sounds of wheel flanges against the track, and rhythmic ca-klunk simulating the sound of each axel crossing over rail joints). Pressing the volume up or down buttons (see pages 12 or 16) adjusts the overall volume of your diner car. A single bell ring will be heard each time the volume is raised or lowered, except that no ring will be heard once the volume reaches the minimum or maximum levels. To adjust only the levels of the background sounds in LEGACY mode, such as bumping, banging, metallic, or ca-klunk sounds: 1. If assigned to a Train, press Train Link, or address your diner car directly by pressing ENG and its ID. 2. Press AUX1 first, then press the volume up or down keys on your remote. 3. Press the Train Link button to continue controlling your train. In this case, a metallic thwack sound will confirm the background or blend sound volume is being adjusted. Again, this confirming sound will not be heard when the background/blend sound volume reaches its minimum or maximum level. To adjust the overall volume of the diner car, follow the instructions above except do not press AUX1. Only press the volume up or down buttons. Be aware that if your Min/Max switch is in the Min position, adjusting the master volume or blend volume from your remote will have essentially the same result. 17

Adjusting the volume from your CAB-1L, or CAB-1 remote To adjust only the levels of the background sounds in CAB-1 or CAB-1L mode, such as bumping, banging, metallic, or ca-klunk sounds: 1. Press ENG and enter the diner car ID. 2. Press AUX1 first, then press the volume up or down keys on your remote. 18

Start-up and Shut Down commands Select the dining car as you would the engine (see page 4) and press the buttons shown to start-up or shut down the car. Figure 2. LEGACY start-up Figure 3. TMCC start-up Figure 4. LEGACY shutdown Figure 5. TMCC shutdown Powering up the track and moving the car without addressing it will cause the car to begin making background sounds. 19

Dialog while stopped Your diner car will play scenes while stopped for passengers exiting the train or boarding. You can trigger speech from the conductor and the station PA announcer separately. When a key or AUX 1/key combination is pressed, you ll hear that character speak as well as the background sound of passengers moving through the station. The station PA speaks only once per button-press, the conductor will speak several times. You can press additional keys without waiting for the current scene to end. Scene/Character Station P/A Conductor Arrival Departure AUX1, 7 AUX1, Table 1. TMCC scenario trigger keys Scene/Character Arrival Departure Station P/A Conductor Table 2. LEGACY scenario trigger keys 20

Dialog while moving When in motion, a single press of the 2 key (or microphone key on LEGACY remote) steps through 5 different scenes. These scenes feature the conductor and the dining car steward and include background sounds as passengers settle into their seats, eat, drink or prepare to exit at the next stop. Because each press of the key advances to the next scene, each scene can be heard only once during a given cycle. The one exception is that the last scene (Lounge Car) will repeat with each additional key press. The motion dialog sequence can be restarted by stopping the train and playing either of the departure scenes (see previous section). Then once the train is moving again, pressing the 2 key (TMCC) or the microphone key (LEGACY) will play Welcome aboard!. Scenes 1 and 2 are only heard if new passengers were boarded at the previous stop. Without new passengers, the first scene heard will be 3, First Seating in the Dining Car. This is also the first scene heard should power be temporarily lost while the StationSounds Diner car is in motion. Scene Dialog LEGACY TMCC 1 Welcome aboard! 2 Tickets please First seating in the dining car. Second seating in the dining car. Lounge car is now open. Table 3. Scenarios Triggering the Next Stop Scene At any time the train is in motion, you can trigger the conductor to announce, Next Stop by pressing AUX1 and 2 (see page 16). This scene may be re-triggered and played anytime. Scene Dialog LEGACY TMCC Next stop Next stop coming up. 21

Conventional Triggering dialog under Conventional/Transformer operation In conventional (transformer-controlled) operation, the short horn or short whistle command will trigger the scenarios in which the conductor and the dining car steward exchange dialog. Note that locomotive dialog is also triggered by a short horn. See the table below for short horn commands. In Motion Stopped Short Horn Dialog Time Stopped Scene 1 Tickets please. 15 seconds or less Arrival 2 First seating in the dining car. 15 seconds or more Departure 3 Bell Ringing Lounge car is now open. Next stop coming up. Table 5. Conventional stopped scenarios Table 4. Conventional motion scenarios When powering up, or if the StationSounds Diner car temporarily loses power (for example, due to dirty track, crossing over a switch or an insulated rail section), the dialog scenario will reset to First seating in the dining car. 22

Sound System Sounds while in motion When your diner car is running on the track, you will hear 3 different types of sounds in the background. First, there are muffled bumping and banging sounds as the car starts, stops, or changes speed. Second, there are occasional sharp grinding metallic sounds of wheel flanges against the track. Third, you ll hear the rhythmic ca-klunk simulating the sound of each axel crossing over rail joints. Rail Clatter Rail clatter is the simulated sound of each axel passing over a rail joint. This sound can be turned on and off using the Option A On/Off commands (CAB-2 only). Pressing an Option A button also plays a special tripple clatter sound to indicate this effect has been turned on or off. Setting the Min/Max switch to Min also mutes rail clatter. Grind Grind is the high-pitched metallic sound of wheel flange scraping the inside of the rails. This sound can be turned off using the Option B On/Off commands (CAB-2 only). Pressing an option B button also plays a special tripple grind sound to indicate this effect has been turned on or off. Press the Train Link button to access this feature. Note, the Min/Max switch setting has no effect on Grind sounds. Bump Bump sounds happen most often when the speed of your diner car changes. Motion start and motion stop or adjustments to your throttle all trigger bump sounds, which are heavy metallic groans, deeper scraping and banging sounds. The Min/Max switch setting has no effect on Bump sounds. 23

Maintenancing your StationSounds Diner Car Uncoupling your StationSounds Diner Car Your Diner Car is equipped with a Kinematic coupler system which allows the coupler to extend when the train enters a curve. This provides a closer car spacing on straight track. To manually uncouple the car, pull down on the small tab on the right side of the coupler. You can also use a Remote Uncoupling Track (available separately, or for O-27 gauge; for O gauge; or for FasTrack layouts) to uncouple your car. Spot the uncoupling pad on the bottom of the coupler above your track magnet. Installing scale couplers (optional) To convert your Diner Car with a scale coupler, first remove the kinematic coupler assembly. Remove the four screws from the corners of the cover plate. Disconnect the coupler centering spring from the truck bolster. After removing the coupler, you will see mounting holes where the scale coupler adapters (included with your car) can be installed. This pad will accept a standard O scale coupler box. We recommend a Kadee No. 747 coupler. Your car will not be able to negotiate an O-54 curve with scale couplers. We recommend O-72 or greater. coupler screws spring uncoupling tab scale coupler spacer Figure 6. Changing the coupler 24 side view of passenger car with scale coupler

Maintenancing your StationSounds Diner Car Switching the interior light on and off Your Diner Car is equipped with a switch that turns the light on and off. As illustrated in Figure 7, the switch is located between the trucks on the underside of the car. body screws ON OFF Interior lights ON/OFF switch body screws Figure 7. Switch and screw locations 25

Maintenancing your StationSounds Diner Car Replacing the LED Your Diner Car is equipped with constant voltage LED illumination. Additionally, the LED features a super capacitor that keeps the illumination alive when the car rolls over a section of dirty track or the power is turned off. In the event you need to replace an LED please contact a Lionel Factory Trained Authorized Service Station or Lionel Customer Service. Because the capacitor must be charged at initial power up, your LED lighting will not be at full intensity immediately upon powering your train. Lights will grow brighter after a few seconds. Lights will stay lit for several seconds after power is turned off to the track, or after car is removed from the track. 26
