CAUTION Full voltage and current are always present at the battery terminals. Keep unauthorized personnel away from batteries. The batteries used in this system can produce dangerous voltages, extremely high currents and a risk of electric shock. They may cause severe injury if the terminals are shorted together or to ground (earth). Be extremely careful to avoid contacting battery terminals during battery installation. Do not touch uninsulated battery terminals. A qualified service person who is familiar with battery systems and required precautions must service the batteries. Batteries must be replaced with Best Power battery number BAT-0065 or equivalent. Best Power batteries come with a two-year warranty. Using batteries not supplied by Best Power invalidates any Best Power service agreement. 2 CAUTION 1. Batteries contain caustic acids and toxic materials and can rupture or leak if mistreated. Released electrolyte is harmful to the skin and eyes. It may be toxic. Wear protective clothing and eye wear. Remove rings and metal wristwatches or other jewelry. Do not carry metal objects in your pockets; these objects could fall into the battery cabinet or UPS. Disconnect battery cabinets from each other before servicing. 2. Tools must be insulated so that they will not short battery terminals. Do not allow a tool to short a battery terminal to another battery terminal or to the cabinet. Do not lay tools or metal parts on top of the batteries. 3. The battery cabinet s chassis (ground or earth) must be connected to the UPS chassis (ground to earth). Ground additional battery cabinets to each other. (See the grounding instructions in this document.) 4. If you are replacing batteries or repairing battery connections, shut off the UPS, and remove both AC and DC input power. Follow the procedures for shutting down power found in the UNITY/I User Manual. For information on battery replacement, call Best Power s Worldwide Service or your local Best Power office. The UNITY/I weighs from 215 lbs/98 kg to 490 lbs/222 kg (with standard batteries) depending on model. External battery cabinets weigh 305 lbs/139 kg (with batteries). See Section 500 in the UNITY/I User Manual for UPS weights and dimensions. Make sure that you are prepared for the weights before you unload or move the UPS or battery cabinets. The temperature should be below 77 F (25 C) for the best battery performance. Batteries will be less efficient at temperatures below 65 F (18 C), and high temperatures will reduce battery life. Typically, at about 95 F (35 C), battery life will be one-half of what it would be at a normal temperature of 77 F (25 C). At about 113 F (45 C), battery life will be one-fourth of normal. Make sure that heaters, sunlight, air conditioners, or outside air vents are not directed toward the batteries. These can make temperatures within battery strings vary, which can cause differences in the batteries voltages. Eventually, this could affect battery performance. Use the Same Number and Type of Battery. To ensure continued superior performance of your UPS and to maintain proper battery charger operation, you must replace the batteries in the UPS or its battery cabinets with the same number of batteries. These batteries must be the same type as the original batteries: valve-regulated, low-maintenance. The replacement batteries should have the same voltage and ampere-hour rating as the original batteries. Any battery used with this UPS shall comply with the applicable requirements for batteries in the standard for emergency lighting and power equipment, UL 924. The installation must conform to national and local codes. Do You Need to Remove Ground from the Battery Terminal? If your local or national code requires you to ground either battery terminal, remove the connection from the terminal to ground (earth) before you service the batteries. If any battery terminal is inadvertently grounded, remove the source of the ground. Contacting any part of a grounded battery can cause a risk of electric shock. An electric shock will be less likely if you disconnect the ground connection before you service the batteries. Dispose of batteries properly. Assume that old batteries are fully charged. Use the same precautions you would use when handling a new battery. Do not dispose of battery or batteries in a fire. The battery may explode. Batteries contain lead. Many state and local governments have regulations for disposing of batteries. Page 2

3 Section 100: Identifying Your Unit External battery cabinet installation will vary depending on the type of UNITY/I UPS you have. Figure 1 shows a standard UNITY/I, and Figure 2 shows a UNITY/I with an external battery connector wired directly into the terminal block. Differences in the installation steps will be called out using Standard for models like Figure 1 and Custom-fit for models like Figure 2. Your receptacle panel may be different. Figure 1: Standard UNITY/I Figure 2: Custom-fit UNITY/I a. Make sure the keyswitch inside the front door of the UPS is turned to Off. Plug in the UPS to establish a ground connection. If you have a hardwired unit, see Section 206 of the UNITY/I User Manual (IBM Document Number SC ) for proper shutdown procedures. b. Place the battery cabinet(s) next to the UPS (see Figure 3). Leave at least 4-inches (100 mm) at the top, rear and sides of the battery cabinet(s) and 36-inches at the front of the battery cabinet(s) for ventilation. Best Power recommends a 36-inch (910 mm) service clearance on the right side of the battery cabinet(s). Figure 3: UNITY/I UPS and Battery Cabinets Page 3

4 101: Stabilizer Bracket a. Installation of the stabilizer bracket is required to meet TÜV requirements, per standards EN and EN b. Place the battery cabinet near its permanent location. You will need access to the back of the unit. The battery cabinet is easier to move before the stabilizer bracket is attached. c. Place the stabilizer bracket flat against the back panel of the battery cabinet. The base of the stabilizer bracket will rest on the floor. Figure 4: Stabilizer Bracket d. Use the bolts that came with your battery cabinet to secure the bracket to the back of the battery cabinet (see Figure 4). e. Repeat for additional battery cabinets. Section 200: Standard UNITY/I UPS Models See Section 300 for Custom-fit UNITY/I Models. 201: Attaching the Ground Cable a. The ground cable (green) is tie-wrapped with the DC cables on the back of the battery cabinet. Use a wire cutter to cut the section of tie-wrap that is threaded through the ring connector attached to the end of the ground cable. (See Figure 5). Battery Cabinet Be careful not to cut the cables. Do not cut any of the other tie-wraps. b. Pull the DC box out of the back of the battery cabinet (see Figure 6 on the next page). Remove the packing material from behind the DC box. Figure 5: Tie-wrap c. Remove the bolt that is labeled with the ground symbol from the back of the UPS (see Figure 6 on the next page). d. Put the bolt you removed from the UPS into the grounding cable s ring connector. Use the bolt to attach the ground cable to the UPS (see Figure 6 on the next page). e. If you have more than one battery cabinet, connect the ground cable of the second battery cabinet to the bolt on the first battery cabinet. Repeat for additional battery cabinets (see Figure 8 on page 6). Page 4

Remove the two screws holding the metal plate to the back of the UPS (see Figure 7). You may discard these screws. b. Insert the DC box you removed in step 201-b into the back of the UPS (see Figure 7). Use the metal plate from the back of the UPS to cover this opening on the battery cabinet. If your UPS has only one external battery cabinet, attach the metal plate you removed from the UPS in step 202-a to the back of the battery cabinet where you removed the DC box in step 201-b (see Figure 7). Use the two screws attached at the base of the opening where you removed the DC box. You are now finished connecting one external battery cabinet; go to Section : Connecting Multiple Battery Cabinets a. If your UPS has more than one external battery cabinet, put the DC box from the second battery cabinet into the connector on the back of the first battery cabinet as shown. Attach the grounding cable from the second battery cabinet to the grounding bolt on the first battery cabinet. Additional battery cabinets are daisy-chained together in the same manner. (See Figure 8.) b. You are now finished connecting multiple battery cabinets to the UPS; go the Section 400. The ground cable (green) is tie-wrapped with the DC cables on the back of the UPS. Use a wire cutter to cut the section of tie-wrap that is threaded through the ring connector attached to the end of the ground cable. Be careful not to cut the cables. Do not cut any of the other tie-wraps. For the Custom-fit UNITY/I UPS Models, do NOT use the green ground cable that is tiewrapped with the DC cables on the back of the battery cabinet. b. Remove the bolt labeled with the ground symbol from the back of the battery cabinet (see Figure 9 on the next page). c. Put the bolt you removed from the battery cabinet into the ring connector at the end of the UPS grounding cable. Use the bolt to attach the grounding cable to the battery cabinet (see Figure 9 on the next page). Page 6

(See Figure 9.) Remove the packing material from behind the DC box. b. Attach the DC box to the battery connector that hangs from your UPS. (See Figure 10.) c. If your UPS has only one external battery cabinet, attach the metal plate included with these instructions (Best Power part number CAB-1086) to the back of the battery cabinet where you removed the DC box. (See Figure 10.) Use the two screws attached at the base of the opening where you removed the DC box. You are now finished connecting one external battery cabinet; go to Section 400. Battery Cabinet Custom-fit UNITY/I Use the metal plate included with these instructions to cover this opening on the battery cabinet. 8 303: Connecting Multiple External Battery Cabinets a. If your UPS has more than one external battery cabinet, put the DC box from the second battery cabinet into the connector on the back of the first battery cabinet. The ground cable from the DC box of the second battery cabinet is attached to the grounding bolt on the first battery cabinet. Additional battery cabinets are daisy-chained together in the same manner. (See Figure 10.) b. Attach the metal plate included with these instructions (Best Power part number CAB-1086) to the back of the last battery cabinet where you removed the DC box. Use the two screws attached at the base of the opening where you removed the DC box. You are now finished connecting multiple external battery cabinets; go the Section 400. Hold down the Precharge switch on the front of the battery cabinet for five seconds. (See Figure 12.) b. Insert the key into the main DC switch on the front of the battery cabinet. Turn it clockwise, then pull the switch out, toward yourself. The ON-LINE LED will light on the battery cabinet. c. Turn the keyswitch inside the front door of the UPS to AUTO. The yellow BATTERY light will turn on briefly, then the green LINE light will turn on. Precharge Switch Keyswitch Figure 12: Battery Pack Front Panel If the red ALARM light is on: See Section 204 in the UNITY/I User Manual (IBM Document Number SC ) before continuing. Do not continue until the green LINE light has come on. If this is the initial installation of a hardwired unit, turn to the Voltage and Phase Check section in the UNITY/I Installation Manual (IBM Document Number SC ). Then, continue with Section 500 of this document to set the UPS parameters for increased battery capacity. Page 8

9 Section 500: Setting the UNITY/I Parameters Because the UNITY/I UPS is operating with increased battery capacity, three UPS parameters must be set: P-55 (Battery Capacity), P-57 (Runtime Constant 1), and P-58 (Runtime Constant 2). If you have more than one external battery cabinet, or if your UPS does not have internal batteries, see the tables in Appendix A to find the correct parameter value. To set these parameters: a. Determine the model number of the UPS and battery cabinet(s). The model number of the UPS is on the label by the keyswitch on the front of the UPS. The model number of the battery cabinet(s) is on a label by the power cable on the back of the battery cabinet. b. Determine if your UNITY/I UPS has standard internal batteries. c. Simultaneously hold down the [CANCEL] and [RUNTIME] keys for two seconds. Release the keys when the display shows P-00. Then, press [CANCEL]. The display will read 0. d. Enter the password Use the [%LOAD] key to increase the display to If you scroll past the number, use the [VOUT] key to decrease the value. e. Press [RUNTIME] to enter the password. The display should show 2. If the display is inactive (no keys are pressed) for five minutes, the password reverts back to level 0 and you must re-enter the password. f. Press [CANCEL] to return to the parameter number display (P-XX). The [CANCEL] key allows you to toggle between the parameter number and parameter value. g. Use the [%LOAD] to step to the parameter that you wish to change (P-55, P-57, or P-58). Use the [VOUT] key if you need to decrease the number. Then, press [CANCEL] to display the parameter value. See Tables 1-3 to determine the correct setting for Parameters 55, 57, and 58. Tables 1-3 are for units with internal batteries and one external battery cabinet. Press [%LOAD] to increase the setting, [VOUT] to decrease the setting. h. To enter the new value, press [RUNTIME]. The UPS beeps to indicate that the new value has been entered. If you do not wish to save a change that you have made, press [VLINE] and the value will remain at its original setting. i. To change the remaining parameters, repeat steps f - h. j. To escape parameter mode, press [VLINE] twice. Page 9

11 Appendix A: Additional Parameter Tables If you have more than one external battery cabinet, or if your UPS does not have internal batteries, use the following tables to determine the correct parameter settings for your system. If there are more than three battery cabinets in a system, parameters will have to be calculated individually; call Best Power s Worldwide Service for more information. Use Table A to add up the amp-hours of each battery cabinet along with the amp-hours of the internal batteries to arrive at the total amp-hours for the system. For example, a UT5K with internal batteries, and two EBPUT2W battery cabinets would have a system amp-hour of: = 165A h. After determining the system amp-hours, set parameter 55 (Battery capacity) to this value. For information on setting battery parameters, see Section 500 of this document. You can use this value with the following tables to determine the values for parameters 57 (K1) and 58 (K2). Tables B and C correspond to particular UPS models. The system amp-hours are in the first column. The row shows the values to input for P-57 and P-58.
