4 Riding High on the WiFi Wave Hooked up has two very different meanings for Al Behrendt, founder and CEO of GEOSat Solutions in Hollywood, Florida, and former President of the Bahamas Billfish Championship. When it comes to the 40-year-old fishing tournament series, the phrase refers to the sweet sensation of having a blue marlin on the line. But when it comes to his company s marine products, hooked up means user-friendly Internet connectivity and communications for distributors, dealers and their boat owner clients. Since its start in 1994, GEOSat has specialized in providing technical communications solutions for the marine industry. GEOSat s primary focus is on its innovative Wave WiFi Internet access system. Wave WiFi provides recreational and commercial vessels with easy-touse and affordable long-range Internet access from wireless hotspots on shore. The biggest difficulty was not in building the product; it was in developing the firmware, said Behrendt. We use the K.I.S.S. principle with all our products. By keeping the user interface Web-based and extremely easy, it gave us an edge on the competition.
