Sunlight Electricity Solar Panel Solar Cell Electricity Collectors Photovoltaic (PV) cells are made up of at least semi-conductor layers. One layer containing a positive charge, the other a negative charge. Sunlight consists of little particles of solar energy called photons. APPLICATIONS: Solar pumps are used principally for three applications: Village water supply Livestock watering Irrigation A solar pump for village water supply is shown schematically in Figure. The Village will have a Constant water demand although there is need to store water for periods of low insulation (low Solar radiation). In environments where rainy seasons occur some of this demand can be met by rainwater harvesting during the rainy season. Ideally in some regions the storage would be - days of water demand. In practice some Installed tanks do not have suf cient capacity and are smaller than a days demand leaving the tank empty at the end of the day. This is due to a mismatch between the sizing, pump capacity and the demand pro le during the day. A solar irrigation system needs to take account of the fact that demand for irrigation water will vary throughout the year. Peak demand during the irrigation seasons is often more than twice the average demand. This means that solar pumps for irrigation can be under- utilized for most of the year although there can be a reduction in strength of the sun during these times reducing supply side of the equation. Cold water is lled in copper tubes and heated. with the principle that black body absorbs more the absorber surface is coated black. Due to solar radiation falling on the absorber surface and converted into heat energy and transfer to water owing through the tubes. At this stage cold water losses its density and becomeslighter. Due to this density difference of hot and cold water. The hot water is lifted automatically to the insulated hot water storage tank. Initially the hot water storage tank is lled with cold water supplied from cold water storage tank which is above hot water tank. The bottom of the cold water tank is minimum one feet above the top of the water tank to avail the pressure head of cold water which forces the heated water to rise up and the cold water to take place of raised water. This process is called THERMO SYPHON PROCESS. It is continuous automatic process and can heats the water upto 60degreeC according to the design of system output.
