INTRODUCTION The PR630 and the PR1530 current probes have been designed for use with oscilloscopes, recorders and other suitable equipment for accurate non-intrusive measurement of AC, DC and complex waveform currents. Using advanced Hall Effect technology, the PR630 can accurately measure currents up to 600 A r.m.s. over the frequency range of DC to 20 khz, while the PR1530 measures currents up to 1500A DC or AC r.m.s.. These features make them powerful tools for use in inverters, switch mode power supplies, industrial controllers, automotive diagnostics and other applications requiring accurate isolated current measurement. 2. 5 3. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Refer to Fig. 1 for the PR630 and Fig. 2 for the PR Switch On When the probe is switched on the red LED will illuminate. If the red LED starts flashing this warns the user that the battery voltage is too low for normal operation and that it should be changed as described in section DC Zero Adjustment The output zero offset voltage of the probe may change due to thermal shifts and other environmental conditions. To adjust the output voltage to zero depress the DC zero button. Ensure that the probe is away from the current carrying conductor and with the jaws closed whilst the adjustment is made Auto Off The probe has an auto power off feature which switches the probe off 30 minutes after the probe has been switched on. When switched off by this method, the switch must be set to the off position before being switched on again. This function can be disabled (for logging applications or similar) by setting the slide switch in the battery compartment to the Off position. To remove the battery cover refer to section 5 Battery Replacement. When the Auto Off function is enabled the green LED will be lit Current Measurement Switch on the probe using the On - Off switch and check that the red LED is lit. Select the required current range (60 Amp or 600 Amp PR630 or 150 Amp or 1500 Amp - PR1530). Connect the output lead to an oscilloscope, multimeter or any other measuring equipment. If necessary, adjust the probe output voltage to zero as described in section 3.2. Clamp the jaws of the probe around the conductor ensuring a good contact between the closing faces of the jaws. Observe and take measurements as required. Positive output indicates that the current flow is in the direction shown by the arrow on the probe. Core eddy current heating is produced when I rms x f > 400,000. 5

FCC Part 15 Class B This product is designed to be safe under the following conditions: - indoor use - altitude up to 2000 m - temperature 0 C to +50 C - maximum relative humidity 80% for temperatures up to 31 C decreasing linearly to 40% relative humidity at 50 C. Use of the probe on uninsulated conductors is limited to 600 V r.m.s or D.C. and frequencies below 1kHz. Safety in its use is the responsibility of the operator who must be a suitably qualified or authorised person. Do not use the probe if any part of the probe including the lead and connector appear to be damaged or if a malfunction of the instrument is suspected. When using the probe ensure that your fingers are behind the protective barrier see Fig. 1 or Fig. 2. 8

9 Clean the case periodically by wiping it with a damp cloth and detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Do not immerse the probe in liquids. 5. BATTERY REPLACEMENT The red LED will flash when the minimum operating voltage is approached. Refer to Fig.3. use the following procedure. Unclamp the probe from the conductor, turn it off using the On - Off switch and disconnect the output lead, from external equipment. Loosen the captive screw which secures the battery cover. Lift the cover through 30 and pull it clear of the probe body as shown in Fig 3. The battery is then accessible. Replace the battery and re-fit the battery cover and fasten the screw. Replacement with other than the specified type of battery will invalidate the warranty. Fit only Type 9 V PP3, Alkaline (MN 1604). SAFETY WARNING Before removing the battery cover, make sure that the probe is remote from any live electrical circuit. Fig 3 Battery Replacement 9

10 6. WARRANTY Your LEM HEME current probe is guaranteed for two years from the date of purchase against defective material or workmanship. If the probe fails during the warranty period, we shall at our discretion, repair or replace it with a new or reconditioned unit provided we are satisfied that the failure is due to defective material or workmanship. To make a claim under warranty, the probe should be returned to us, postage prepaid, with a description of the defect. The use of a battery, other than that specified invalidates this warranty. Goods alleged by the buyer to be defective shall not form the subject of any claim for injury, loss, damage, or any expense howsoever incurred whether arising directly or indirectly from such alleged defects other than death or personal injury resulting from the seller s negligence. No condition is made or to be implied nor is any warranty given or to be implied as to the life or wear of goods supplied or that they will be suitable for any particular purpose or for use under specific conditions, notwithstanding that such purpose or conditions may be made known to the seller. 10
