4 1. INTRODUCTION This manual contains information and warnings which must be followed to ensure safe operation of the clamp meter. WARNING READ "SAFETY INFORMATION" BEFORE USING THE METER This instrument is a pocket-sized AC clamp meter. The clamp incorporates teardrop shaped jaws for ease of use in crowded cable areas and other tight places. The CM52 is designed to international safety standard EN (CAT II 600V) and has a wide range frequency response from 45Hz~1KHz. The clamp also incorporates a Data Hold function to allow for easy readings in tight or hard-to-read locations and an auto power-off function to conserve battery power. A protective carrying case is included for protection of the meter whilst not in use. 4. MAINTENANCE Maintenance consists of periodic cleaning and battery replacement. Repairs or servicing not covered in this manual should only be performed by qualified personnel. 4.1 Cleaning The CM52 may be cleaned using a soft damp cloth. Do not use abrasives, solvents, or detergents, which can be conductive. Allow to dry completely before using. 4.2 Repair & Service There are no user-serviceable parts in this unit. Return to Martindale Electric Company Ltd if faulty, the service department will quote promptly to repair any fault that occurs outside the guarantee period. Before the unit is returned, please ensure that it has been checked thoroughly for flat batteries (check & replace). 1.1 Description 1 CAT. II MA X Storage Conditions The clamp meter should be kept in warm dry conditions away from direct sources of heat or sunlight, and in such a manner as to preserve the working life of the unit. It is strongly advised that the unit is not kept in a tool box where other tools may damage it. 0 0V ~ 2 200A OFF ~ 0A 0 3 HOLD 2A 20A Warranty The CM52 is guaranteed against faults in manufacture and materials for 24 months from date of invoice. Faults will be rectified free of charge provided the unit has not been tampered with and is returned with its housing unopened. 5 AC Current Measurement 1. Set the range switch to 2A / 20A / 200A range. 2. Press the yellow trigger to open the jaws and clamp on to one conductor only. Try to place the conductor at the centre of the jaws. 1. Clamp Jaws Detect AC current flowing through the conductor on test. 2. Trigger Press the trigger to open the clamp jaws. When the trigger is released, the jaws will close. 3. Display The display indicates the measured value of signal, function mode, low battery, range and hold settings. 4. Hold Button Press to toggle in and out of data hold mode. In the data hold mode, the "HOLD" indicator is displayed and the last reading is frozen on the display. Press the button again to exit and resume taking readings. Using Data Hold Function 1. Press the Data Hold button to freeze the reading. Symbol " H " is displayed to indicate the instrument is being used in the Data Hold mode. 2. Press the button again to cancel the Data Hold mode. The Data Hold function is available on all ranges for measurement in hard-to-read locations. 5. Function / Range selector rotary switch. The rotary switch selects the function and desired range. 1.2 Unpacking and Inspection Before unpacking the clamp meter, examine the shipping carton for any sign of damage. Unpack and inspect the clamp meter and if there is any damage then consult your distributor immediately. After removing your new clamp meter from its packaging, you should have the following items: 1. Digital clamp meter 2. Instruction manual 3. Two LR-44 batteries (installed in meter) 4. Carrying case If any of the above items are missing or are received damaged, please contact the distributor from whom you purchased the unit. 5 2

6 1.3 Replacing the batteries DANGER Never replace the batteries while taking a reading. When the display remains blank or the symbol appears, replace the batteries. 3. OPERATION 1. Set the range switch to any range. 2. If the display remains blank or symbol appears, replace the batteries in accordance with the battery replacement procedures as outlined in section Set the range switch to the OFF position. 2. Remove the screw on the back of the case. 3. Replace the batteries with two new ones, observing correct polarity. Replacement batteries should be type LR-44 or SR Re-install the screw in the case bottom. 2. SAFETY WARNINGS This instrument has been designed and tested according to EN , Safety Requirements for Electronic Measuring Apparatus. This instruction manual contains warnings and safety rules which must be observed by the user to ensure safe operation of the instrument. Therefore, read through these operating instructions before using the instrument. DANGER Never use the instrument on a circuit above 600V AC. The jaws are made of metal and their tips are not insulated. Be especially careful about the hazard of possible shorting where equipment under test has exposed conductive parts. CAUTION The maximum size conductor that can be tested is approx. 21mm in diameter. An accurate measurement cannot be made when the jaws are not fully closed on a conductor larger than 21mm. When measuring a large current, the jaws may buzz. This is not a fault and does not affect the accuracy. About 30 minutes after the instrument is turned on, the Auto Power-Off function turns the instrument off, even during a measurement. To continue testing, turn the range switch to OFF, then to a range again. Do not attempt to take measurements with the battery compartment cover removed from the instrument. 3 4
