30 Glossary Lighting Designs & their Key Areas AlGaAs: Aluminium gallium arsenide is a semiconductor material, used to produce IR LEDs. AlInGaP: Aluminium gallium indium phosphide is a semiconductor material, used to produce red, amber and yellow LEDs. Candela: Unit of luminous intensity. One candela is one lumen per steradian (light in one specific direction). Formerly called the candle. Chromaticity: A pair of values x,y that precisely specify the hue, though not the absolute brightness, of a perceived colour. It refers to the dominant or complementary wavelength and purity aspects of the colour taken together, or of the aspects specified by the chromaticity coordinates of the colour taken together. The colour of light, as defined by its chromatic coordinates, generally using the CIE diagram. Colour Bin: The colour region of the CIE 1931 chart that an individual LED fits into. Colour Temperature (CCT): Description of the colour of a light source. Measured on a scale of degrees Kelvin. Lower Kelvin temperatures such as 2400 K is more red; higher temperatures such as 9300 K are more blue. Neutral temperature is white, at 5000 to 6500 K. CRI (Colour Rendering Index): A rating scale for light sources (lamps) from 0 to 100 to indicate how accurately colours can be perceived under a light source. The higher the CRI, the more accurately colours appear. Technically, CRI ratings should only be compared for lamps with similar colour temperatures (Kelvin ratings). Dominant Wavelength: The wavelength at which the human eye perceives the light emitted from the LED.
