8 TECHNICAL BULLETIN Using New Technology in Diesel Fuel Enhancement to Reduce Input Costs As crude oil and fuel prices continue to soar, many diesel fuel users are recognizing that diesel fuel is no longer a cheap commodity, but an important and costly ingredient of their business operations. In addition, they are beginning to recognize that changes in technology, both to diesel engines, and in the production of diesel fuel, offer the opportunity to enhance the performance of diesel fuel, and in the process reduce fuel consumption and thereby input costs. DSG Canada, a Saskatchewan based company, with deep routes in the diesel power industry are leading the field in this technology. Driven by emission standards, diesel engines have quickly become very complex, precision pieces of machinery, says Percy Hoff, President of DSG Canada. For the same reasons, diesel fuel has also changed dramatically, culminating in the legislated use of Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD), last year. Combining DSG s intricate knowledge of diesel engine technology (they have been involved in the diesel engine repair business in two countries since 1975) with chemical engineering, has allowed DSG to develop a unique line of diesel fuel enhancement chemicals which are saving DSG customers millions of dollars in reduced diesel fuel consumption and lower repair bills. Our customers report fuel savings of anywhere from three to eighteen percent, says Chuck Maguire, Ontario sales manager for DSG Canada. In addition one needs to consider improved engine and fuel system life, extended fuel filter life, reduced trip times and less down time. Even at a three percent gain, with today s fuel prices, the return on investment is very short. According to Percy Hoff, the technology is no magic. DSG addresses fuel enhancement in nine critical performance areas including cetane number improvement, detergency, lubricity, thermal stability, storage stability and moisture control. Although diesel fuel leaving the refinery meets all specifications, there are many factors during the handling and storage phases that can quickly erode the quality of your diesel fuel. In addition, although the fuel meets the minimum legislated specifications, it does not mean that there is not any room to improve its performance, according to DSG. The problem we face, says Maguire a long time Petroleum Industry executive who has worked for major oil companies, is that there are many products out there that simply cannot meet claims, or make wild and unsubstantiated performance claims. DSG originally sold diesel fuel additives manufactured by a third party. This was until they discovered how many products were simply not capable of significantly improving the performance of diesel fuel. In fact, says Hoff, We found some that were actually detrimental to diesel engines. On the other hand, Hoff points out that there are a handful of very good fuel additives, including the DSG brands that will significantly improve diesel fuel and engine performance. He points out that the market for such products is currently small, and selling is difficult, as it involves a detailed process of customer education. It is much easier to sell to mass markets, using high visibility and a lot of advertising and promotion. DSG s advantage is their in-depth knowledge of diesel engines. They are able not only to manufacture and blend their own additives, but they can test them on dynamometer mounted engines at their 31,000 square foot facility in Saskatoon. Complex testing equipment allows for the measurement of fuel economy and exhaust gas emissions. While the testing is important, DSG take much pride from true-life customer testimonials. We simply know that when people use our fuel enhancement products, they almost always react with immediate amazement, says Hoff.

9 TECHNICAL BULLETIN How Winter Fuel Enhancers Work Preventing Gelling of Diesel Fuels Pour Point Depressants are chemicals, which can lower the natural fuel Gel (Solidification) Point Temperature of fuels. Today s newer pour point depressants work by changing the attraction of wax crystals in addition to modifying the shape and size of the wax crystals as they form. These additives effectively reduce the rate of crystal formation and allow the other flow modifiers to perform as designed. Flow Improvers Improve Cold Filterability and Lower the Fuel Pour Point Flow improvers change the wax crystal formation by both forming nuclei and arresting growth. Instead of the larger, flat untreated platelets, a formation of small, multi-axial needle crystals are developed by flow improvers. As the temperature of the fuel drops below the cloud point temperature, small wax crystals begin to grow on the nuclei. A flow improver s additive molecules attach to crystal surfaces and block further growth. The resultant outcome is smaller crystals. Due to the presence of additive molecules between crystals, the crystals tend not to adhere to each other. By virtue of their small size and multi-axial needle arrangement, these wax crystals pass more easily through fuel filters. These attributes are essential in the formulation of a Premium Diesel Fuel Additive suitable for winter use. At the proper treat level, a good CFPP additive formulation will provide optimum fuel system protection by modifying the wax forming tendencies of the fuel. This will allow the fuel to perform dependably at ambient temperatures in excess of 12 to 15 F below the cloud point of the fuel. While the fuel will be hazy or cloudy, the equipment will continue to operate satisfactorily with no significant power loss or engine performance change. De-Emulsifier and De-Icer Agents Break Any Fuel/Water Mixtures and Prevent the Water from Freezing These items are most important in North America because of the pipeline transportation of fuel products. Unfortunately, as a result of inadequate housekeeping many of the fuel handling and storage systems (as well as fuel tanks) in the Canada and the U.S. are plagued with excessive water bottoms and abnormal amounts of free water accumulations. Consequently, these additive components are essential if water corrosion (rust) is to be minimized and winter problems are to be avoided when using a premium diesel fuel additive. Unfortunately, although these items are very cost effective, they are quite often not utilized at the required dosage levels to adequately protect the fuels, storage tanks, and delivery systems. While de-emulsifiers additives are available from various suppliers and can be of different chemical make-up, the only effective de-icer additives are glycol ether type chemicals. These additives chemically combine with the water droplets (and dissolved water accumulations), break the surface connection with the fuel, and lower the freeze point temperature in direct relation to the amount of deemulsifier additive and de-icer additive present. 10 TECHNICAL BULLETIN Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel Fuel (ULSD) What is the relationship between Sulphur and Diesel Fuel? Sulphur is found naturally in diesel fuel. When diesel fuel is burned, sulphur burns in oxygen to form the gaseous dioxide sulphur (IV) oxide, SO2. This is believed to be responsible for a large amount of acid rain, and as a result, Environmentalists and Government Agencies have required refineries to reduce the amount of sulphur in diesel fuel used in diesel engines. To lower the level of sulphur in the fuel, the crude oil may be hydrotreated. This is a refinery process that causes a fraction of crude oil to re-act with hydrogen at high temperature and pressure, in the presence of a catalyst, to improve colour and odor, and reduce sulphur content. Around 1994, in the first stage of sulphur reduction, diesel fuel was required to contain no more than 500 parts per million of sulphur. This was know as LSD (Low Sulphur Diesel). With environmentalists continuing to push for cleaner-burning diesels, and engine and fuel system manufacturers making massive technological strides, we are now at the point of introduction of Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel diesel fuel that contains a miserly 15 parts per million of sulphur. Does Reduced Sulphur Cause Engine Problems? The simplistic answer is no. However, when the crude is hydro-treated, the natural lubricants in the diesel fuel are broken down, and if these are not replaced, severe fuel injection system and even engine problems can occur. Suppliers of diesel fuel are required to ensure that ASTM D975 standards for lubricity of diesel fuel are adhered to. Although this is generally the case, many conditions in the field can lead to the lubricity level of the fuel dropping below this minimum standard, resulting in many smart operators using lubricity improvers to protect against this eventuality. What about the use of Fuel Additives? Fuel additives can be used not only to protect against low lubricity situations, but also to prevent premature gumming, to reduce premature oil thickening, to improve engine performance and to control moisture in diesel fuel. To enhance lubricity, synthetic or natural lubricity enhancers can be used. Natural lubricity enhancers are commonly produced from canola, mustard or other vegetable oils. In tests at the University of Saskatchewan conducted on behalf of DSG Canada, enhanced lubricity performance was achieved by using a combination of vegetable oils (methyl esther) and synthetic lubricity improvers. Do Additives Need to be Certified for use in ULSD? Yes, when additives are used, by law they must not increase the sulphur level in the ULSD. Most reputable additive manufacturers have had their products tested to ensure that this does not occur. Check the labels on additives to make sure that they do not violate emission regulations. Can Additives be used in engines with particulate traps? Again, it depends on the product. Reputable additives and those that are labeled as safe for use in vehicles with particulate traps or filters will not harm the engine. In fact, the correct kind of additive will actually improve the filter life by reducing soot accumulations. Where can I get more detailed information? 11 TECHNICAL BULLETIN Premium Fuel Enhancer Definitions Lubricants 4+ contains both Biodiesel and synthetic lubricants to enhance the lubricity values of today s Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel fuels. Lubricants help prolong system life by keeping the internal moving parts moving freely, therefore not wearing as quickly, which will lead to longer system life and possibly better fuel economy. Provides wear protection. Detergents Help to keep the fuel injection system and valve train area clean. Helps prevent carbon deposits that may build up on the internal injection system parts of the injection pump and injectors. Carbon build up can cause an injector to stick resulting in poor performance, excessive smoke, poor starting and decreased fuel economy. Detergents also help keep carbon and soot from building up in the valves, valve seals, piston rings which can prevent premature engine component failure. Stabilizers There are two different kinds of fuel stabilizers, Storage and Thermal. Storage stabilizers help keep the fuel fresh. This would come into play if equipment and or fuel may be stored for any period of time longer than 1 month (e.g. farm and construction equipment being stored over winter, farm fuel or bulk storage tank fuel). Thermal stabilizers help keep the fuel from degrading from the constant temperature fluctuations that the fuel is exposed to when the equipment is running. The fuel is heated as it is pumped to the injectors, but not all the fuel is burned and the excess fuel gets returned to the fuel tank. This heated fuel then actually gums up and will shorten filter life and injection system life. Water is present virtually all the time in diesel fuel. This is because condensation happens continually so there is always water. Our water control additive demulsifies water so that it is separate from the fuel and the equipment s fuel filter / water separator will remove the water preventing it from going through the injection system. This does make filtration very critical. Also, if you control water in fuel, there is smaller chance that algae / micro organisms will not start to grow in the fuel. Rust & Corrosion Inhibitors Works in conjunction with water control products. This would be more for when equipment is in storage or not used on a daily basis. Rust pits may start to develop on internal parts, causing the parts to wear prematurely. 12 TECHNICAL BULLETIN CHOICE OF AFTERMARKET DIESEL FUEL ADDITIVES DSG Canada is committed to supplying the diesel aftermarket with high grade products which not only improve diesel engine performance, but which are also safe for diesel use in diesel engines. As most people in the industry know, there are thousands of aftermarket fuel additives available in the market place, many of which offer performance claims that are too good to be true, or cannot be substantiated. Some may even contain compounds which are harmful to diesel engines and new particulate trapping devices. With the recent focus on exhaust emission reduction, additives which contain metals are being offered with claims of emission reduction. Black smoke emissions can be reduced through the addition of certain organometallic compounds that act as catalysts [Howard 1980]. Barium organometallics were used occasionally as smoke suppressants in the USA during the 1960s. They were later banned by the EPA, because of the potential health hazard of barium emissions. Other metals can be also used as smoke suppressants, including calcium, iron, cerium, or platinum. While they can be effective at reducing soot emissions, these additives can lead to significant deposits in the combustion chamber and have long term impacts on engine performance. [Jääskeläinen 2008] There are currently no studies that we are aware of which show the impact of these combustion chamber deposits on engine life. Studies also indicate that 85-95% of the additive is exhausted from the engine and therefore contributes to total PM (mass and number). [Jääskeläinen 2008] Increasing PM output can lead to premature plugging of diesel particulate filters (DPFs). We therefore recommend extreme caution when selecting an aftermarket diesel fuel additive, and suggest that you use only those products which meet industry standards such as ASTM, Cummins L-10 and N-14, NACE, EMA, TMC and NCWM. It is also advisable to ask suppliers to provide a guarantee against engine or particulate filter damage.

13 DSG S NEW FORMULA Concentrated Product Strategy A common strategy in the fuel additive market is to provide a low price point package. This is achieved either by diluting active ingredients with solvents, or by addressing fewer fuel performance categories. A quick check will show you that most products address lubricity and fuel gelling, with perhaps detergency as almost an after-thought. This phenomenon commonly occurs when Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel fuel (ULSD) is used in modern engines with common-rail and electronic unit injection systems. The combination of ULSD and the heat generated by the high pressure injection systems causes the fuel to cook in the injection system. Because of the high volume of fuel which is returned to the tank to cool the fuel system, the carbon deposits are quickly trapped in fuel filters. As the fuel filters become restricted, the operator will use more throttle to maintain power, which results in increased fuel consumption. 14 BLACK FILTER SYNDROME The Silent Fuel Economy Killer Fleet tests reveal source of wasted diesel fuel During the latter part of 2008, DSG conducted engine performance tests to check the effects of the use of ultra low sulphur diesel fuel with the latest high pressure Common Rail (CR) and Electronic Unit Injectors (EUI) injection systems. The tests were done in response to customer complaints of premature fuel filter plugging. Operators had reported a gradual drop off in engine performance and fuel mileage that seemed to be associated with short fuel filter life. DSG s Trial Results After several weeks of operation, diesel fuel filters would gradually turn black. Flow tests revealed that the flow through the filters was reduced at the same time. Technicians called this Black Filter Syndrome, and further research indicated that several engine and equipment manufacturers had become aware of this issue. Technicians deduced that this may be caused by conditions within the fuel system. Dismantling of the high pressure injectors indicated moderate to severe carbon deposits on internal injector parts and fuel passages within a relatively short operating period. These deposits would then find their way to the fuel filters via the return fuel which is used to cool the fuel system. Declining Fuel Economy and Increased Maintenance Costs Apparent symptoms of Black Filter Syndrome are premature filter plugging, fuel system performance deterioration and declining fuel economy. Fuel filters are expensive, but more importantly, plugged filters and under-performing fuel injection systems will result in the operator having to increase throttle position to retain power. Increased throttle position results in increased fuel consumption. In addition, excessive carbon and soot will adversely affect Diesel Particulate Filters which can be very costly. 18 DIESEL ENGINE & FUEL SYSTEM MAINTENANCE DIESEL FUEL SYSTEM FLUSH Why should you flush the fuel system? To properly understand the need for Fuel System and Engine maintenance, we must first understand how the Diesel Engine performs. For the engine to perform properly and efficiently, several components and processes must interact at the proper time. The most important ones are: Clean Fuel Clean Air Heat Combustion Unrestricted Exhaust Air enters the cylinders through the intake valves, and when compressed, results in heat being generated. Fuel is injected through the injectors with precise timing and is ignited by heat and compression. The exhaust valves open and exhaust exits the chambers. This process takes a fraction of a second. If one or more of these components does not function at 100%, then we could have poor starting, heavy black, blue or white smoke, or a lack of power. A catastrophic failure of the engine can result in extreme cases. What happens when contamination occurs? The fuel system, when contaminated, builds up a varnish on all metal components (i.e.: plungers and barrels in injection pump or needles and seats in the injectors) resulting in poor atomization and fuel delivery. The combustion chambers, pistons and valves develop carbon deposits that restrict airflow and hamper proper combustion. These conditions can cause sooting in the exhaust system, which causes exhaust restrictions. This can also seize the piston rings, which can allow combustion into the crankcase resulting in the potential for cylinder scoring and oil consumption. When these conditions occur, the components will normally require disassembly for cleaning or replacement. This is very costly and time consuming. As the power train components wear, the fuel timing can be affected. Proper pump timing can improve performance, emissions, and the longevity of the engine. Improper timing can do the opposite; not only reducing performance but also causing buildup of carbon and soot in engine components. How does the Diesel Dialysis Machine work? With the introduction of the Diesel Dialysis Machine, removal of harmful deposits can be done without removing any components or causing lengthy down time. The engine is connected to the Diesel Dialysis Machine and runs on the dialysis fluid, which cleans the fuel system as well as the combustion chambers. This dialysis process removes the varnish and carbon deposits, freeing sticking components, and lubricating the fuel system. When the system is cleaned properly, the engine can start better, run smoother, and reduce exhaust smoke. In some cases the engine may have to be flushed more than once, while in other extreme cases, or when damage may have already occurred, disassembly of the engine or components for repair or replacement will still be required. Putting the engine on a maintenance routine with periodic flushing approximately every 80,000 kms or 5000 hrs. the engine will perform more efficiently and show a reduction in exhaust emissions. Dirt and water can contaminate the fuel system and cause severe damage in a very short period of time. To keep the system clean and free of contamination, proper filter changes are required. The use of low micron water separator filters, such as Racor or Stanadyne Fuel Manager, are also recommended to keep the system free of water and dirt. The regular use of 4+ Premium Diesel Fuel Enhancer can greatly reduce fuel system wear and help keep contamination out of the system. The engine oil can also become contaminated from any of these conditions. Proper oil change intervals, along with crankcase flushing, can reduce costly repairs. This is more prevalent in engines that have an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, as the exhaust is recirculated back into the engine for further burning. This can cause excessive carbon build up in the combustion chambers, resulting in many of the above symptoms. As you can see, all of the engine and fuel system components are closely linked and all must work in unison to have a properly performing, long lasting engine. When one component is not functioning properly, this can greatly affect the entire system. Maintaining just one component while ignoring others can be detrimental to engine life. These pictures clearly show the effects of carbon buildup which will reduce engine efficiency and reduce fuel economy. A periodic EGR Flush will eliminate this issue.

The fuel economy we saw is a lot higher than we expected and translates into a large savings of diesel per year per bus. There are 27 buses in the City fleet.
