5 Characterize and investigate the chemical composition of various vegetable oils, fats / related products and essential oils. Analysis of trace and heavy metal, contaminants and organic pollutants in vegetable and industrial samples. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), USA May 2007 October 2007, Visiting Scientist Food and Industrial Oil (FIO) Research, National Centre for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR), ARS/USDA, Peoria, Illinois, United States of America (USA) Research: Production and quality evaluation of Biodiesel from indigenous vegetable oil resources - Financial Support from Higher Education Commission (HEC), Islamabad, Pakistan. Characterization of vegetable oil-derived diesel fuels (biodiesel), using technique such as GLC and 1 H-NMR. Developed an alkaline-catalyzed transesterification protocol for the production of biodiesel from indigenously available vegetable oil resources. Optimization of the variables of temperature, reaction time, alcohol to vegetable oil ratio, catalyst type and concentration, agitation intensity, etc. for high yield with better quality of the end use product-biodiesel. Furthermore, I have got expertise in state-of-the-art chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques ( 1 H-NMR, HPLC, GLC, GC-MS, FT-IR, and X-ray Spectrometry) and also in Rancimat method (OSI), DSC, ball-on-disk method and HFFR techniques for lubricity analysis of vegetable oils and biodiesel. Attock Refinery Limited (ARL), Rawalpindi, Pakistan October January 2007, Visiting Researcher Quality Control Laboratory (QCL), Attock Refinery Limited (ARL), Morgah, Rawalpindi, Pakistan Research: Characterization of Biodiesel produced from vegetable oils- Financial Support from Attock Refinery Limited (ARL), Morgah, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. I have got expertise in instrumentals techniques such as Flash point tester, Cloud and pour point instrument, Cold filter plugging point tester, Kinematic viscosity tester, Distillation apparatus, Density and specific gravity meter, X-ray Spectrometry to characterize the biodiesel. 6 COURSES STUDIED IN PhD PhD (Analytical Chemistry): Special topics in analytical chemistry, Chemistry of natural antioxidants, Advanced chemical kinetics, Advanced practical in analytical chemistry, Environment resource management, Isolation, purification and characterization of enzymes, Advanced biochemical techniques, Enzymes kinetics, Environmental biochemistry and Experimental design II. COURSES STUDIED IN M.Sc. M.Sc. (Analytical Chemistry): Physical chemistry-i, Physical chemistry-ii, Experiments in physical chemistry, Inorganic chemistry-i, Inorganic chemistry-ii, Inorganic analysis, Organic chemistry-i, Organic chemistry-ii, Organic analysis, Applied chemistry, Analytical chemistry, Advanced analytical chemistry-i, Advanced analytical chemistry-ii, Environmental chemistry, Experimental design I. Research The focus of my research has been on the characterization of vegetable oils and vegetable oilderived diesel fuels (biodiesel), using technique such as GLC, FTIR and NMR. I have also developed an alkaline-catalyzed transesterification protocol for the production of biodiesel from indigenously available vegetable oil resources. I have also expertise in state-of-the-art chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques ( 1 H-NMR, HPLC, GC-MS, XRD, SEM, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, X-ray Spectrometry etc). Furthermore, the development of new heterogeneous catalysts and catalytic processes for new selective chemical processes which may lead to a considerable reduction of undesired by-products or waste products. A non-conventional oilseed crops such as Moringa oleifera, Hibiscus esculentus, Thespesia populnea, Cucumis melo, Citrus reticulata and Jatropha curcas seeds have been fully characterized for biodiesel production. These crops are noted to be potential sources of valuable vegetable oils of nonedible commercial importance. As Malaysia imports a large quantity of petro-diesel every year at the expense of large amount of foreign exchange, these newly investigated sources of oils may help reduce such imports. A series of conventional oils and used frying oils have also been evaluated for biodiesel production. Experimental protocols have been optimized for obtaining high biodiesel yield with best quality of end-use products. The produced biodiesels have also been characterized and evaluated for their quality and performance which indicated that these should be used as replacement of petro-diesel.
