The resulting saving in fuel consumption is estimated to be 5%. Removing a cylinder reduces friction by 20% compared with a 4-cylinder engine architecture of the same cubic capacity, leading to a 4% saving in fuel consumption. The 3-cylinder pulse, combined with a longer exhaust phase, is twice as powerful as that of an equivalent 4-cylinder engine. This natural turbocharging means that less demand is made of the turbo which in turn is more efficient, directly benefiting fuel consumption. F1 TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER. Turbo Technology was first introduced in F1 in High Tumble Strategy: optimised flow of the fuel mix inside the combustion chamber for fast, stable combustion; the air turns quicker in the chamber (twice on average) which allows a near instantaneous combustion.
