9 What is a tail light converter? A tail light converter is an electronic device that will accept a 3-wire electrical signal from a tow vehicle and convert the signal to one that a 2-wire system of a trailer can understand without damaging the electrical systems of either vehicle. 2-Way Wiring systems 2-wire systems can be identified by the use of a single bulb on each side of the vehicle/trailer to provide both stop lamp and turn signal illumination. 3-Way Wiring systems 3-wire systems utilize separate wires to provide power to the stop lamp and turn signal bulbs. 3-wire systems can be identified by twin bulbs in each side of the vehicle/trailer. standard 2-wire to 3-wire systems 4-Flat Connector Wiring Standard Tail Light Converters contain 4-flat car-side connectors. 38 RECEIVER HITCHes terms RECEIVER Hitch - A device that attaches directly to a tow vehicle providing a connection between the tow vehicle and a trailer. It has a receptacle (typically 1-1/4 or 2 square) used to mount different styles of mounts or hooks. RECEIVER - The receptacle part of a trailer hitch which accommodates inserts such as ball mounts, drawbars or accessory carriers. Common receiver sizes are 1-1/4 and 2. DRAW BAR - A removable coupling. It fastens to a receiver hitch receptacle with a hitch pin (usually ½ or 5/8 diameter. It allows the mounting of hitch balls, pintles, or hooks. BALL MOUNT - A type of draw bar mount that can be inserted into a receiver hitch receptacle. It allows the installation of trailer balls of different sizes. This allows the ball and ball mount assembly to be easily removed when not in use. HITCH BALL - A ball shaped attachment to a ball mount or directly to a hitch onto which a trailer coupler is attached. HITCH PIN - Used to fasten any receiver hitch insert or draw bar into a receiver hitch. LOCKING HITCH PIN - A hitch pin that has the ability to lock the draw bar or hitch insert to prevent theft. CLASS I TRAILER HITCH - Trailer hitch with capacity of up to 3,500 lbs gross trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight. CLASS iii TRAILER HITCH - Trailer hitch with weight carrying rating of up to 10,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 1,000 lbs tongue weight. GOOSENECK - A Class 5 hitch that mounts a ball in the bed of a pickup truck (either 2-5/16 or 3 in diameter) to engage a coupler on a trailer. Not to be confused with a fifth wheel. SWAY CONTROL DEVICE - A device similar to a shock absorber which resists swaying movement of a trailer tongue sometimes caused by passing vehicles and wind. SAE J684 - This is the current Society of Automotive Engineers specification for towing products & accessories. This is the testing specification Westin receiver hitches are tested for. V-5 - A testing specification from the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission. Although this is still advertised, it is superseded by SAE J684. TRAILER WEIGHT - The term to describe the total weight of the trailer including tongue weight. TONGUE WEIGHT - The term to describe the weight capacity that is placed directly on the hitch ball/hook. This is the amount of load actually placed on the vehicle. 38

39 electrical terms WIRING HARNESS - A wiring assembly that usually contains different input and output plugs. CONNECTOR - This describes a vehicle or trailer plug that was its wires un-terminated by another plug. CONNECTOR LOOP - This is a wiring harness that has two connections on both ends. This can be used to extend the trailer plug on the vehicle side, or cut and spliced into the vehicle and trailer. T-CONNECTOR - Term used for the Westin product line of vehicle wiring kits. These kits are an all inclusive and complete solution for wiring the applied vehicle for towing use. These kits will use plugs that connect to the OE plugs on the vehicle. This will be marketed as plug-in-play. TAIL LIGHT CONVERTER - A device that uses the circuits of the tail lamp wiring of a tow vehicle, and uses them only as a signal input. The device will then use a constant (+12 volt) power source and create new trailer light circuits. This eliminates the possibility of the trailer lamps drawing excess power and overloading the tow vehicle s tail lamp circuits. These are usually included with the T-connector. This also converts the standard 4-wire vehicle side circuits to the simplified 3-wire circuits on a trailer. ADAPTER - A device used to adapt a connector on the tow vehicle to a different interface for the trailer. One example would be the common 7-way RV style connector to the 4-way flat trailer connector. Brake control terms BRAKE CONTROL - An electronic device that is permanently installed inside the tow vehicle. This device controls the voltage signal for the trailer brake circuit (when equipped with electric assist brakes). The four types offered are as follows. LED CONTROL (W4) - This is the standard brake controller. This only has blinking LED s to alert when trailer braking is applied. Brake force can be adjusted by a knob and be manually applied with the side plunger. DIGITAL CONTROL (W6) - Contains the same features as the LED CONTROL with the added LCD screen that shows the brake force being applied numerically. PROPORTIONAL CONTROL (W8) - Adds a time delayed feature that will apply stronger braking force delayed after the brake pedal is applied initially. GYRO ACCELEROMETER (W10) - Adds the feature of sensing forward g-load when the brakes are being applied. The controller can increase/decrease braking force independently to the user set parameters. BRAKE CONTROLLER HARNESS - A wiring harness that is terminated at both ends to interface a Westin brake controller with the factory trailer wiring. The end going into the tow vehicle will contain OEM plugs. This is also a plug-in-play product. 39
