3 A Introduction to the Seller s Guide Welcome to the Albion Chairs Seller s Guide. This has been compiled to help you to provide bespoke solutions to your customer s seating requirements. The Guide is divided into seven sections:- Section B provides some background to the formation and operation of Albion Chairs. Section C concerns purchasing information, including more specific detail about the sub-assemblies of the chairs, with a step-by-step guide to ordering chairs. Section D provides range-specific information, including prices, dimensions, standard and non-standard options. Section E gives additional information about selling Albion chairs. Section F suggests simple methods for maintaining chairs and looking after fabrics. The Guide has been designed with your needs in mind. The Guide complements the Albion Personalised Seating brochure which gives summarised information by icon and covers general office chairs - task, managers, ergonomic, executive chairs and an overview in the form of a pictorial summary of all ranges by task or function. 4 B Albion Chairs Limited Albion Chairs is the culmination of a lifetime s expertise in chair design and manufacture. L J Pask started the company in 1987 after nearly three decades of producing finished chairs and manufacturing chair components.the company is a family business, now run by Philip and Eric Pask.Their sister, Sylvie Watson, is northern area manager, and brother Daniel has undertaken various design projects for the company. Albion Chairs currently employs 30 staff, including a four-person sales team, which covers the whole of the United Kingdom. Components for chairs are imported from Taiwan, Malaysia, Italy, Germany, France, Ireland and the UK. Fabrics come from three main suppliers - Interface (Camborne/Glenside), Hartley Hemisphere and Bradbury.The design, assembly and upholstery of our chairs are undertaken at our factory in High Wycombe. The company moved to this location in Albion Chairs staff possess a range of skills covering design and technical knowledge.the company aims to be innovative in fashioning new models and versatile in adapting to the changing demands of the market-place. Above all, the company takes pride in making products which conform to the highest standards of engineering. Albion Chairs is accredited to ISO9002 and has held the certificate since All of our chairs are rigorously tested for strength, stability and safety to British Standard by FIRA International, the world s leading independent testing house for all furniture types.the company follows developments at national and international levels, to ensure that the design and production of the chairs continues to meet the highest standards. Albion Chairs has gained the FIRA Gold Award for the Perpetua range of 24 hour chairs.the FIRA gold award has international recognition as exemplifying the best in design and manufacture at home and overseas.with onsite servicing as standard this makes the Perpetua range a valuable marketing tool and not just a solution to a niche market area. 6 C Personalising your chair What follows is a summary of the many features and options available to you, together with prices. arms Arms used to be chosen for look and price rather than function. Now, adjustability is all-important. Our arms are designed to allow for width adjustable brackets, and for stocking separately from the chair. Arms can also be added or altered afterwards (ie retro-fit ). Ask our Sales Office for further information. 25 T DR mechanisms The choice of mechanism should reflect the answers given to the questions at the start of this section.along with the gas-lift, the mechanism provides the function or movement of the office chair.all users must be made aware of the mechanism s workings, either by you or by the addition of a swing tag (available from our Sales Office). Prices for our mechanisms are included in the upholstered parts of the chair. See range details (Section D). See also page 46 for prices of spare parts. Universal coding for mechanism function: The following is the list of different functions to be considered when choosing the right chair for the user. Not all options are available within all ranges. See range details (Section D). Note: Mechanisms 1,5,7 are available with and without weight adjustment and with or without easy-lift ratchet backrest height adjustment (see specific ranges). Mechanisms 1,3,5,7 are supplied with lever controlled gas height adjustment. Manual height adjustment is not a standard option. Mechanisms 3,6,8 do not come with backrest height adjustment we recommend the use of an adjustable lumbar support. 9 ordering your chair Our unique code system is designed to facilitate the many possible combinations within our ranges that you may require. For example, an order which reads Q+17.FB.AS.D.A stands for: Q+ 1 7 FB AS D A Warranties (see Section E Advanced Sales Information page 42) Our standard warranty is for 8 hours-a-day for 5 years use. It covers all moving parts for fair wear and tear. Fabric and foam must follow an inspection procedure by the relevant manufacturer.the recommended weight of the user should not exceed 120kg. Our non-standard warranty is for situations where use may be greater than 8 hours-a-day, or the user may be over the normal weight guarantee. Normal weight is up to 120kg. Overweight is up to a maximum of 150kg.The non-standard warranty can cover up to 24 hour use shift patterns, heavier weight use, and is limited to a two-year period. Contact the Sales Office or your area manager for additional surcharges. Quartz range, with the medium 1 size back; the back only 7 seat mechanism, with You should contact your area manager if you have any queries about putting the code together. Once you have your code, please contact the Sales Office who will be pleased to process your order.you will then receive an order confirmation, expected date of delivery and price. the folding back feature, the anti-static option, on a draughtsman footring and spindle, with adjustable arms. The Perpetua warranty is exclusive to our Perpetua range and sets new standards of customer service and after sales support. It covers the whole chair, for 24 hour use, for weights up to 150kg for 5 years. It includes a call out service which means any mechanical problem will be put right (but not upholstery work) on site.the Perpetua range has only been preceded by one other chair manufacturer in achieving the Gold Award from FIRA. It is an easily removable cushion held on the chair with 4 steel press studs, contains within it a fabricated foam structure developed to cradle the pelvis and help promote posture in the neutral position and being a zipped cover allows the option to change the cushion if need be or to wash the cushion cover.we have chosen to identify the 3 standard options as small, medium and large although we can make bespoke cushions to order. It is recommended that any bespoke cushion should be determined after a consultation with a qualified practitioner (osteopath, chiropractor, physiotherapist etc). The Pelvis is the foundation of the spine. If positioned correctly, the rest of the spine will also sit correctly.to determine the correct size of cushion, you should measure around the two bony prominences on either side of your hips. Most people will be: Large (over 44 ), medium (36-44 ) and small (less than 36 ). The user must sit firmly in the back of the chair to feel the full effect of the PM. It is recommended that you have all three cushions when doing a demonstration. The headrest is designed to be used as both a headrest and a neck support. It allows for height and tilt adjustment. It works in the same way as most car seat headrests. The mechanisms used whether the independent on the SD1, SD2, SD3 or the synchro on the SD4 and SD5 facilitate a forward (or negative) tilt to help achieve the ideal pelvic position.we need to encourage users to tolerate as much forward tilt as possible to benefit from this feature. Both versions have weight adjustment for the strength of the tilt, easi-lift ratchet height adjustment for the backrest and a (sliding) seat depth adjustment. The arms are 4 way adjustable (multifunctional) arms allowing for width, height, reach and swivel. The lumbar or lordosis adjustment comes from our two-way adjustable control from Schukra.There are two handles: one to increase the lordosis and the other to raise or lower to suit. 27 From its formation in 1987, Albion Chairs has sought to meet both the specialist and the generic needs of the market. Since launching the Spynamics range to cater for users with back problems, and the 24-hour Perpetua range five years ago, our product development team has concentrated on finding solutions to another specialist area.the introduction of the Grande is the result of these endeavours. The Grande has been designed to facilitate users who are greater than an average size in height and weight, accommodating weights of up to 30-stone. The 6-star base increases the stability of the chair for tall users. It is fitted with larger castors to allow for a drop-through gas spindle.this gives an increased range of seat height which, when coupled with a seat slide, enables users who are 6 6 or taller to position themselves comfortably. The mechanism originates from UP Mex, one of the few remaining manufacturers of component parts in the UK. We chose this mechanism because it has the following elements: the best seat and back movement in a synchro, an easy-to-adjust side winder for the weight/tension adjustment of the chair, S level certification with FIRA and an internal spring, which can be adjusted to allow for up to 30-stone users. The backstem has been modified to allow for our specific use without compromising the strength.this facilitates backrest height adjustment, an option that is not readily available on many other heavy-duty chairs. The feature that we believe will impress Grande users most is its seat foam.working closely with our cold-cure foam supplier, we have produced a moulded memory foam seat with a cut foam inner that is unique in our market. Its properties, features and benefits are immediately apparent once you sit on the chair. It moulds around the body without limiting the spread over the surface area.this allows for support and comfort, and prevents restricted blood supply during extended sitting. The back shape comes from one of the largest ply moulds in existence.we have extended its overall back height with a tilt- and height-adjustable headrest. Combined with the depth adjustable moulded foam seat, this will cater for a wide range of sizes of users but also those users whose proportions may be unusual - namely tall in the back, short in the leg and vice versa. As part of the back upholstery we have fitted a two way adjustable lumbar that allows for spinal curve adjustment and height adjustment of the curve.the handle works both functions by turning but needs to be pulled out (for height) or pushed in (for curve). The final component(s) of the chair, the arms, have a sprung steel insert, which allows for all movements of the chair.the arms also add further strength and stability to the chair and have a shape to accommodate any width of user. The Grande represents the best in design, components and price.we are confident it will be a successful addition to our customers' portfolios. 42 E Advanced sales information 42 Commonly asked questions Do you deliver direct? We deliver to our trade customers all over the UK each week. It is also possible to deliver on your behalf. Charges vary according to the requirement. Please see the relevant section below (pg 50). Can I have my order more quickly if I collect it myself? Yes. How quickly can you produce a chair? Most operator chairs can be produced within days. The scheduling of our deliveries mean we work to a weekly turnaround. If you have an emergency requirement, you can arrange to pick up the chair or schedule the delivery with a third party courier. In this case, you will have to pay for the courier (see relevant sections below pg 50). What chairs do you have in stock? We make everything to order but we hold 350,000 worth of stock to respond to lead-times quickly. Do you have a showroom? Yes.We also have a good selection of chairs on our shop floor. What is the height for a standard gas spindle? Generally, 9 for Quartz operators, 8 for deluxe operators (such as Ruby,Wycombe, Scirocco, Domino) and 7 for executive chairs.the universal spindle satisfies all these requirements. Can you fit a draughtsman footing to any chair? Yes. See the Parts price list (p46) for a footring without higher gas spindle. If we use a 12 spindle on a chair would it be stable? We recommend an adjustable footring on a higher gas-lift and generally on the 7 back mechanism only. A chair with a higher centre of gravity will tend to be more difficult to operate with a seat tilt. If there is a need for seat angle adjustment with a higher gas-lift we recommend the independent 5 mechanism as opposed to the synchro 1. What is the limit for extra weight guarantee? Up to120 kg for normal use and between 120 kg and 150 kg for non-standard use. Refer to sections on warranties and the Perpetua (pg 9, pg 22 and pg 43). Do you do grey components? No. Do you sell linking reception furniture? We make our reception furniture linkable in two ways, permanent and non-permanent. Does your arm selection fit all your chairs? What is retro-fitting? For a number of years we have used our own design for applying ring and adjustable arms. Our bracket allows for easy retro-fitting as the bracket fixing points match all our mechanisms and do not need any special drilling in the seat. Do you do repairs on site? If there are good reasons to repair on site then we will consider it. However, the work needed to undertake a repair quickly and effectively is almost always better done at our factory in High Wycombe. Why are your reference books so complicated? Some customers find the large amount of information contained in our reference books overwhelming. Each range of Albion s chairs represents an entire family of chairs. Each chair within the family can be personalised to your customer s needs. Consequently, and to reflect this significant choice, our reference books necessarily contain comprehensive information about ranges, applications and options. How long is your standard guarantee? The standard guarantee is 5 years for the moving parts, assuming fair wear and tear, and 8 hours-a-day use. What are the safest castors for wooden floor? We recommend the following - PU castors, which have a rubberised wheel, and the brake loaded version of it. Can we get Spynamics in another fabric? We market the Spynamics chair in Extreme fabric only.this is because of its increased elasticity. If you can source another fabric that stretches and still meets the necessary flame retardancy and minimum wear criterion, we will be happy to use it. Do you re-cover chairs that are not yours? Yes, but we will not price the work without at least seeing a picture of the chair.

43 Do you upholster Oskar tub chairs in leather or Extreme fabric? We can use either. See new pricing details for Oskar. How do you clean fabric on your chairs? We have contained some information in Section F pg 56. However, if you are not sure you should check with our Sales Office as requirements vary significantly. What is your cheapest range of chairs? Overall, customers find that the Quartz range gives the very best value.we can however, save you money by modifying the chair make-up. What is the difference between a Ruby and a Scirocco? The Ruby is an operator range with the outside backs and seats finished in black plastic.the Scirocco is a fully upholstered executive range.the lowest Scirocco back is the same size as the biggest Ruby back. Do you have any instructions on how to operate your chairs? Yes, for all our mechanisms, we have a swing tag that is available from the Sales Office or our website. Do you do beam seating? If you require a chair for demonstration that is not available from your showroom stock, we will provide you with something as close to your customer s requirement as possible. We can also arrange for an area manager to demonstrate a chair on your behalf, if necessary.the Sales Office has nearly two hundred sample chairs and each of our area managers has up to fifty available for sample and demonstration.we also offer special deals for showroom chairs. If a sample has to be made in a specific fabric and/or if the delivery involves being sent by a third party courier then we ask that you pay for this. However, we will credit you this amount if it is followed by an order. We expect our sample stock to be returned within two weeks unless otherwise requested. Credit accounts will only be opened once verified by the sellers credit insurance company.the seller may refuse the buyer credit facilities and may as an alternative offer proforma invoice or cash on delivery methods of payment.the seller also reserves the right to take up satisfactory trade and bankers references. If the buyer fails to make any payment or any part thereof on the due date then without prejudice to any of the seller s other rights the seller may: suspend or cancel deliveries of any goods due to the buyer without liability upon its part; and/or require payment in advance of delivery of undelivered goods; and/or terminate any orders or contracts. 46

47 Delivery of the goods Unless otherwise agreed, the seller shall deliver the goods carriage paid to the United Kingdom address of the buyer.the seller shall under no circumstances be liable to late delivery of the goods.all delivery dates are estimated dates only and time shall not be of the essence for delivery.the seller will charge the buyer additional delivery charges where the buyer asks the seller to deliver goods to a third party. Risk in the goods shall pass to the buyer upon delivery.all goods must be examined and signed for on the behalf of the buyer at the time of delivery. No claim for damaged goods, for shortages or for non-delivery will be accepted by the seller unless such damage, defect or shortage is received by the seller within three working days of receipt of the goods by the buyer. In spite of delivery having been made, property of the goods shall not pass to the seller until the buyer shall have paid the price plus Value Added Tax in full and no other sums whatsoever shall be due from the buyer to the seller.the buyer must permit the seller reasonable access for all deliveries (including to third parties) to be completed during normal working hours. Should the seller incur any additional expenses or charges due to the buyer s failure to provide either unimpeded premises access or accurate premises information, such expenses or charges will be invoiced to the buyer. Warranty and liability Subject to the conditions referred to above, the seller warrants that the goods will comply with their specification at the time of delivery and will be free from defects in material and workmanship for all parts (excluding foam and fabric) for a period of five years from the date of delivery.the seller will repair or replace any goods or parts which prove to be defective provided the goods are returned to the seller carriage paid.the warranty shall be limited to the replacement value of the defective item. The above warranty is given by the seller subject to the following conditions: The seller shall be under no liability in respect of any defect in the goods arising from any drawing design or specification supplied by the buyer. The seller shall be under no liability in respect of any defect arising from fair wear and tear, wilful damage, negligence, abnormal working conditions, failure to follow the sellers instructions (whether oral or in writing), misuse or alteration or repair of the goods without the seller s approval, or if the alleged defect is not notified to the seller within five working days from the date the defect arose. Except in respect of death or personal injury caused by the seller s negligence, the seller shall not be liable to the buyer by reason of any representation, or implied warranty, condition or other terms or any duty at common law, or under the express terms of the order, for any consequential loss or damage (whether of loss or profit or otherwise), costs, expenses or other claims for compensation whatsoever (and whether caused by the negligence of the seller, its employees or agents or otherwise) which arise out of or in connection with the supply of the goods or their use by the buyer. Termination The seller may terminate any order or contract with immediate effect if the buyer commits a material breach of these terms and conditions, if the buyer does not pay the seller, or if the seller becomes insolvent, bankrupt or ceases trading. Force Majeure The seller shall not be liable to the buyer or be deemed to be in breach of contract by reason of any delay in performing or any failure to perform any of the seller s obligations in relation to the goods, if the delay or failure was due to any cause beyond the seller s reasonable control.the seller shall not be liable for any default caused by act of god, war, strike, industrial action, fire, accident, difficulties in obtaining raw materials, components or bought-in-goods, labour, fuel, parts, machinery, or power failure. In the event of a force majeure event arising, the seller shall be granted a reasonable period of time to make delivery and the buyer shall be liable for the payment of any reasonable costs. Retention of Title The risk in the goods shall pass from the seller to the buyer upon delivery of such goods to the buyer. However, notwithstanding delivery and the passing of risk in the goods, title and property in the goods, including full legal and beneficial ownership, shall not pass to the buyer until the seller has received cash or cleared funds payments in full for all goods delivered to the buyer under this and all other contracts between the seller and the buyer for which payment of the full price of the goods thereunder has not been paid. Payment of the full price of the goods shall include the amount of any interest or other sum payable under the terms of this and all other contracts between the seller and the buyer under which the goods were delivered. Covering law and jurisdiction This Agreement will be construed in accordance with and governed by the laws of England and the parties here to agree to submit all disputes to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts. GENERAL BRITISH STANDARD REQUIREMENTS & GOLD AWARD Minimum chair requirement The seat should adjust in height, the backrest should adjust in height and tilt and the chair should be supplied on a 5 star base and castors.there is no reason for caring employers not to exceed these, however. Strength, stability and safety BS 5459 Part 2:2000. This is the Standard for testing all pedestal (gas-lift) chairs. It comprises three sections: strength, stability and safety. Each section is equally important. Strength determines the physical strength of the components used. Stability ensures the chair will not tip up in the forward, sidewards and rearwards direction. Safety ensures that if the chair were to fail, it would do so in a manner that would not cause injury to the user. Once the chair has passed this demanding testing procedure, it has the capacity for 24-hour use and up to 150kg in weight. All other types of visitors, reception and four legged chairs are tested for strength to BS 4875 (1985) Part 1, Level 4 for General contract use or Level 5 for Severe contract use. Stability is covered by BS7945 (1990). A new European standard, BSEN 1335 (2000) Parts 2 and 3, has just been published. It contains new types of testing methods but will only certify a chair for 8 hours use, up to 110kg in weight. Working to the highest possible standard,albion s chairs will carry the British Standard number BS 5459 Part 2: Flammability All foam used by Albion Chairs is Urethane Foam, commonly referred to as 'Combustion Modified'. These foams should, and do, satisfy the test contained in Schedule 1 Part 1 of the 'Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, and amended in All the fabrics Albion Chairs use are tested in a combination of foam and fabric.these combinations comply with the medium hazard as detailed in BS 7176:1995.This requires resistance to ignition by ignition sources 0 (cigarette), 1 and 5 when tested according to BSEN (cigarette test). BSEN (match test) and BS Sect 4 ignition source 5 incorporates requirements for durability of treatments and repeat testing.this procedure makes sure that all fire retardant fabric, whether it is inherent or treated, will be fit for purpose for a period of time. Filling materials The filling materials (foams) used by Albion Chairs meet the requirements of BS 3379:1991.This contains a series of fatigue and static tests that assess the foam s ability to 'recover' after use.the thickness and hardness are measured before the testing and then again after completion.as long as these measurements are within an acceptable range, the foams are put into a class depending on their use. For office seating, the Classes are 'V' for seats and 'S' for backs.all foams used by Albion Chairs are within these Classes. Ergonomics BS EN 1335 Part 1 covers dimensional standards. All parts of the chairs are measured against requirements in the standard. Such measurements include height of seat from floor, height of back from floor and width between the arms. Other tests include user trials, where the user assesses the ease of use and comfort of the chair. Anti-Static or Static Dissipative To meet BS EN , our chairs are upholstered with Interface Hi-Tech, a static dissipative fabric. No glue is used in attaching the fabric to the foam.a conductive filament is placed between the fabric and the foam and also between the fabric and outside plastic.the base is polished aluminium with anti-static castors or glides. 52 F Maintenance 52 Maintenance Introduction This section suggests methods of changing various chair components within the Albion ranges in the easiest and safest manner and provides information on care of fabrics. Chair components and their functions Castors: Twin wheel hooded castor manufactured from black nylon. For ease of movement of the chair. Dustcover: Black plastic telescopic cover that stops the gas-lift grease from being visible. It is fitted over the top of the gas-lift. Five or six star base: Black nylon star base which supports the whole chair. Accommodates the castors and the gas-lift. Gas-lift: Cylinder device for height adjustment of the chair. It is a sealed gas-filled unit that fits into the five or six star base at one end and into the seat action at the other.a lever of the seat action operates it. Included in this unit is a set of thrust bearings, which help in the rotation of the chair. Pad - seat: The seat pad construction is usually a moulded plywood and plastic shroud or thinner plywood set.this is upholstered with a layer of polyurethane foam and covered in fabric.the seat set is held together by the seat action which is screwed to the underside of the seat pad and held firm by threaded inserts called T-nuts. Pad - back: The back pad follows the same construction as the seat pad but is a different size and shape. Additionally there can be a stitching pattern on the front face, and the top of the back stem is screwed in-between the two piece ply or plastic set.there are more instances where the inner upholstered component is also made of plastic where the back is concerned. Seat action - back only: (coded as '7' e.g. P37a). The seat action controls the function of the chair. For this action there is only adjustment for the back angle and the gas-lift. Levers situated along the sides of the seat pad operate both of these functions.assembly of the mechanism includes a backstem, which is fitted to the backrest of the chair at one end and the mechanism at the other end.the mechanisms vary from range to range in that they have automatic ratchet backrest height adjustment, semi-automatic ratchet backrest height adjustment or mechanical backrest height adjustment. For different mechanisms there is a tension adjuster. By turning either clockwise or anti clockwise the resistance of the back tilt will either be increased or decreased. Seat and back action - independent: (coded as '5' e.g. P35a).The seat action controls the function of the chair. For this action there are separate levers that control the angle of the back and seat.there is also the gas-lift adjustment lever. Levers situated along the sides of the seat pad operate all of these functions.assembly of the mechanism includes a backstem, which is fitted to the backrest of the chair at one end and the mechanism at the other end.the mechanisms vary from range to range in that they have automatic ratchet backrest height adjustment, semi-automatic ratchet backrest height adjustment or mechanical backrest height adjustment.also, for different mechanisms there is a tension adjuster. By turning either clockwise or anti clockwise the resistance of the back or seat tilt will either be increased or decreased. Seat and back action - synchronised: (coded as '1' e.g. P31a) The seat action controls the function of the chair.this action operates in a synchronised motion operated by a single lever.the seat and back move together in a 2:1 ratio. Levers situated along the sides of the seat pad operate both of these functions. Assembly of the mechanism includes a backstem, which is fitted to the backrest of the chair at one end and the mechanism at the other end.the mechanisms vary from range to range in that they have automatic ratchet backrest height adjustment, semi-automatic ratchet backrest height adjustment or mechanical backrest height adjustment. Also, for different mechanisms there is a tension adjuster. By turning either clockwise or anti clockwise the resistance of the seat and back tilt will either be increased or decreased. Backstems: Each of the actions described above is fitted with a backstem. It is fitted to the rear of the seat action and the top part is fitted to the back pad of the chair.this component enables the height of the back pad to be adjusted. It is adjusted in one of three ways: via an automatic ratchet system, a semi-automatic ratchet system, or manually with a handwheel. Ratchet mechanisms enable the user to adjust the height of the backrest simply by placing their hands on the bottom sides of the back and pulling upwards.the back will adjust in height until it reaches the top of its travel when, with an automatic ratchet the backrest will return to its lowest position, or with a semi-automatic ratchet it will stay at its highest point until it is released.there are approximately six different height positions within the range. NB If the back is pulled up too fast, it will miss all the adjustment points. Visitors cantilever frame and backstem: Most of our ranges are designed so that the different upholstery styles or options can be fitted with a visitors cantilever frame.this is usually a tubular, fabricated frame screwed to the underside of the seat pad with a backstem connecting the seat to the back.these chairs do not usually have backrest height adjustment.these chairs are used round meeting tables, in reception areas and canteens or for visitors.

Pliers File Set of Rubber WD40 Bases Although there are several ways to change a base, this method makes it less awkward. 1. Turn the chair upside down, possibly by up-ending it onto another available chair. 2. You will see the bottom of the gas-lift, complete with circlip and washer. 3. With a flat head screwdriver, remove the circlip and washer.this will allow the outside tube of the gas-lift to lift off easily from the main part of the gas-lift.the plastic dust cover will not come away.the thrust bearings and washer kit will be visible on the end of the gas-lift piston rod. 4. Holding the base at an angle of approximately 45 degrees, hit the tube end until it comes away from the base.you may want to use some WD40 between the base and the gas-lift tube. 5. Now take the tube and slip over the washer kit and thrust bearings on the end of the gas-lift piston rod, and inside the plastic dust cover. 6. Finally refit the circlip and washer on the outside bottom of the gas-lift outer tube.with the chair still turned upside down, fit the new base onto the gas-lift. Turn the chair the right way and sit heavily on the seat a few times, to ensure that the gas-lift locates into the base. Castors The castors are constructed in such a way that they will allow for easy removal and fitting.there is an 11mm pin, with circlip, that fits into the base. 1. Hold the castor, pull and it will come out of the base. 2. Push the new castor into the hole in the base. 3. If the castor comes off of the pin, which stays in the base, use a pair of pliers to pull the pin out of the hole and replace into the castor. Once replaced, the castor can still be used. Gas-lifts Depending on the material type of the seat action, there are two methods for changing the gas-lift. If the seat action is made of steel: 1. With the chair upside down and while supporting the weight of the chair by the five or six star base, hit around the seat action with a hammer where the gas-lift enters the seat action. 2. Do not hit constantly in one place - hit around the circumference of the gas-lift.this should make it easier to release. Use some WD40 if necessary. If the seat action is made of aluminium: You should not hit the action as this will crack the aluminium casting and render the seat action useless. 1. Fully tighten two pairs of mull grips around the silver main part of the gas-lift in a 'handle bar' position. It is important to tighten up the mull grips as much as possible to get maximum purchase around the gas-lift. 2. Twist the gas-lift out of position.wd40 at the gas-lift entry point will help. 3. If the chair has been used for a long period of time it will be quite difficult to get the gas-lift out.the mull grips may slip which will cause the gas-lift to burr. If this happens the gas-lift should be filed down so the gas-lift movement is not restricted in and out of the outside tube. 4. If you are unable to remove the gas-lift, then you will have to replace the seat action, dustcover and gas-lift or return it to the factory.you should still be able to use the old base and castors, by removing them as outlined above. 53

54 F Maintenance 54 Mechanisms As described earlier, there are three main types of seat actions we use. Although they look different the method of changing is more or less the same.all the seat actions come with a backstem, which is secured, to the rear regardless of its type.the top of the backstem is fitted in-between the two piece back set (whether plastic or plywood or a mixture of both).to change actions: 1. Remove the backstem from the back of the action, using either a screwdriver, Allen keys or undoing the handwheel holding the backstem in the mechanism, depending on the type of fixing. 2. If the chair has flexi-arms fitted these will need to be removed from the chair. Please see the section on removing arms. 3. Turn the chair upside down to reveal the seat action and the fixings securing it to the underside of the seat pad.the gas-lift should now be removed as described above.the seat action can be removed from the seat by undoing the four corner screws on the seat action. 4. Remove the old seat action and replace it with the new one and fix it to the seat using the screws that have just been undone. If adjustable arms are fitted then you may have to reposition them to secure the seat action properly. In all cases of adjustable arms being fitted, the arm assembly will go between the seat action and the seat pad.this may mean the seat action will be located on some spacers. 5. Once the new seat action is fitted and fully secure, the back stem can be refitted and tightened using the fixings previously undone.the chair can now be re-assembled on the gas spindle and five or six star base. Backstems 1. Remove the back stem from the rear of the seat action as described above. 2. With a flat head screwdriver, gently prise open the two pieces of the back pad by sliding the screw driver in-between.as the two halves open you will see the male and female plastic clips. Move the screwdriver around this area and prise open.there is a minimum of 4 clips around the perimeter of the back that need to be prised open. Some chair backs are held together with a keyhole type of fixing.this normally involves unscrewing two fixings and then sliding the inner away from the outer and then prising apart. 3. Once this is done, the outer piece of the back pad will come away to reveal the top of the back stem. 4. Undo the visible fixings on the top of the back stem. Replace this with a new backstem and re-fix using previously undone fixing screws. 5. To re-fit the two piece back pad, carefully line up the male and female clips.with hand pressure, push together the two halves. 6. When connected properly, you will hear a click. It will seem obvious that they are firmly secured. Repeat this for the other clips. 7. Once they are all done the back stem needs to be secured to the rear of the action using the previously undone fixings. 8. If there is a keyhole fixing being used then carry out the reverse described above. Arms There are two types of arm fitted to our ranges - those fitted by means of our adjustable width armplate, such as the adjustable arms, and those fitted to brackets within the upholstery, like the flexiarms. The adjustable arm assembly is split into three sections. There is a horizontal flat fixing plate that is secured to the underside of the seat in between the seat and mechanism assembly.this has four grooves stamped into it. Bolted to this are the 'L' shaped adjustable arm brackets, which house the trigger operated height adjustable device. In turn, these brackets are fitted with PU arm pads. It is very unlikely that you will need to change the flat fixing plate. However you may need to remove it from the chair for repair purposes.to do this: 1. Undo the four bolts at each corner of the mechanism on the underside of the seat assembly. 2. In some cases, undoing the front two bolts may automatically release the plate, as the front bolts secure the mechanism and the fixing plate. If this is not the case, there are a further two bolts which will be visible. 3. The whole adjustable assembly will now come away from the underside of the chair.you are now free to change the relevant parts without being obstructed from the chair. To change the top PU arm pad 1. Undo the two Phillips headed bolts on the underside of the pad.these are the only two fixings you will see. 2. The PU pad will now come off of the 'L' adjustable arm bracket. 3. To re-fit, reverse the procedure above.

55 To change the 'L' adjustable arm bracket 1. You will need a 13mm ring or adjustable spanner to undo the hex-headed bolts that secure the adjustable arm bracket to the flat fixing plate. 2. There are two on each side.these are the only visible fixings. 3. To re-fit, reverse the procedure above. Changing the flexi-arms involves 1. Using an M6 Allen key to undo the bolts from the top and bottom of the failed arm. 2. Use a rubber mallet to ease off the arm in an outwards horizontal direction.this will then expose two steel round brackets which are threaded to receive the Allen bolts. 3. To re fit the arm ease the new flexi-arm onto the round brackets and move inwards as close to the chair as possible. 4. When removing the arm the bevelled washer may come out of the arm. If this happens replace the washer into the recess in the flexi-arm.the bevelled part faces outwards. 5. Refit the Allen bolt. Fabric maintenance Following the suggestions given here will help prolong the life of the upholstery on Albion s chairs.we recommend the following: Vacuuming It is imperative that any dirt, grit or dust is prevented from getting into the fabric.this can be achieved by regular vacuuming. For high usage, we recommend weekly vacuuming. Dry cleaning wool upholstery Dry cleaning once or twice a year will preserve and enhance wool upholstery. More regular cleaning may be necessary for high usage situations. Dry cleaning does not weaken the textile fabrics of the upholstery, but it is not able to remove a build-up of ingrained dirt. It is not advisable to use cleaning methods involving large amounts of water, as shrinkage can occur. Never use ammonia, acids or bleach on wool upholstery. Anti-stain treatments These can be applied to wool and synthetic fibres. By forming an invisible protective shield around each fibre, they lower the surface energy of the fibres so that they do not attract soiling agents or soak up wet stains. Anti-stain treatments must be specified at the ordering stage as they cannot be added later. Vacuum thoroughly Care of Leather For regular cleaning, simply vacuum and then take a soft cloth and wring it out in a warm soap solution mild soap, never detergent.wipe the leather using a light circular motion taking care not to soak the leather. The fabric being used has a distinctive pattern that must go a certain way as this may affect the meterage requirement. 2. LUCIA fabric, from Interface, needs to be foambacked for long-term contract use. 3. For all leathers not shown, the price must be confirmed with the office. 4. The Oskar1 is a moulded foam structure and can only be upholstered in specific fabrics. If in doubt please consult the sales office first. 63
