4 ST1 Portable Magnet Wire Stripper & Solder Tip Cleaner OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS SET-UP The ST1 ships with a driver with stripping head, a standard 6 volt Ni-Cad battery, A/C trickle charger and one wheel dresser. Stripping wheels must be ordered separately. Optional power supplies may also be ordered. BATTERY OPERATION NOTE: Battery operation is designed for light to medium production applications. For heavy production use, the A/C to D/C power supply or the extended power battery pack should be used. The standard Ni-Cad battery is fully charged at the factory and should not need charging before use. If it is necessary to remove the battery pack from the driver, unscrew it, following the label instructions on the tool. The battery pack contains a ring loop to facilitate attachment to a balancer, tool belt, etc. For protection purposes, the ring loop is covered with tape during shipment, remove this tape before use. AC OPERATION NOTE: Use of the A/C to D/C power supply is recommended for heavy production applications. The A/C to D/C power supply imparts more power to the driver than the standard battery and about the same amount of power as the optional extended battery. The optional A/C to D/C power supply must be purchased separately. Attach the driver of the unit to the power supply by screwing the drive and unit together. Plug the female end of the IEC cord into the IEC connector on the power supply, and plug the male plug into the electrical supply. Check that the unit is plugged into the appropriate electrical supply, either 115V or 230V. Turn the A/C to D/C power supply on by using the ON/OFF switch located on the back of the unit. OPERATION FOR USE AS A MAGNET WIRE STRIPPER Make sure the power source is disconnected before installing the wheels. Remove the battery or turn the A/C to D/C power supply off. To install the wheels remove the clear guard by loosening the two screws holding it to the frame. Remove the nuts from the ends of the shafts. The beveled wheels are a press fit, and the nuts are not needed when using them. Press the beveled wheels on with the bevel to the outside and check that they are seated on the sharp points on the spindle collar. Replace the clear guard. Locate the recessed wheel rotation switch on the bottom of the stripper head housing. Using a small screwdriver, set the switch to the right so that the wheels will spin inwards. Correct wheel rotation is critical to stripping magnet wire. Open the wheels by turning the wheel opening screw so that a slight pull can be felt on the wire when inserted between the wheels. Reinstall the battery pack or turn on the AC to DC power supply and depress the switch. Insert the wire to be stripped between the wheels from the beveled entrance and pull out towards you to strip the wire. If the wire breaks or does not strip easily adjust the spring tension screw until the wire may be easily pulled through the wheels and stripped without breaking. NOTE: There are different grades of fybrglass wheels available for different insulation types and wire sizes. If unsure which wheels are appropriate for your application please send 20 feet of your material with your stripping specifications for a FREE evaluation. We will return the results and recommend the appropriate solution for your stripping requirements.

5 FOR USE AS A SOLDER TIP CLEANER Make sure the power source is disconnected before installing the wheels. Remove the battery or turn the A/C to D/C power supply off. To install the wheels remove the clear guard by loosening the two screws holding it to the frame. Remove the nuts from the ends of the shafts. Slide the wheels onto the shafts and ensure they are seated on the sharp points on the spindle collar. Replace the nuts onto each shaft. NOTE: Both nuts are right hand thread. Replace the clear guard. Locate the recessed wheel rotation switch on the bottom of the cleaning head housing. Using a small screwdriver set the switch to the left so that the wheels will spin outwards. Correct wheel rotation is critical to efficient cleaning of solder tips. Back off the spring tension screw for zero spring tension. For solder tip cleaning the gear torque provides enough wheel pressure for most applications. Set the wheel opening screw so that the wheels are open slightly more than the diameter or size of the tip to be cleaned. Reinstall the battery or turn on the AC to DC power supply and depress the switch. Gently insert the solder tip against the spinning wheels. DO NOT JAM THE TIP BETWEEN THE WHEELS as this may cause the gears to strip. Push and rotate the tip against the wheels until cleaned. MAINTENANCE CLEANING AND LUBRICATION The stripper/cleaner head should be dusted periodically to remove insulation or residue buildup. Do not use solvents on the plastic parts of the tool. No lubrication is necessary. WHEEL DRESSING Periodic dressing of the fybrglass wheels is necessary for optimum performance and to increase wheel life. Wheels should be dressed whenever performance deteriorates or when the wheels exhibit grooves or high spots. To dress the wheels use the wheel dresser provided with the unit. Separate the wheels approximately 1/8" (3mm) by turning the wheel opening screw in. Insert the wheel dresser strip between the wheels and close the wheels lightly onto it. Turn the unit on and work the dresser back and forth to true up the wheels and remove grooves and residue. Replace wheels when worn below ½ (12.7mm) diameter. TROUBLESHOOTING Problem Tool will not strip wire or clean solder tip properly. Solutions 1. Check wheel grade and type is correct. 2. Check dressing of wheels. 3. Are wheels worn out? If so replace. 4. Check wheel opening setting. 5. Check that wheels are set to the proper rotation for application. Problem Tool does not run. Solutions 1. Check that power source is completely attached. 2. Check that battery pack is charged. Problem Tool breaks wires. Solution 1. Check wheel dressing. 2. Check wheel separation. 3. Check that wires are not kinked. 4. Check wheel grade and type is correct. 5. Check spring tensioning and reduce the tension. NOTE: The internal parts of the ST1 assembly are not user serviceable. If any problems occur with the operation of the unit not related to the above parts, return the unit to the factory for service. This tool is equipped with an electric cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into a matching outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. Do not modify the plug provided if it will not fit the outlet, have the proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. The green conductor with or without yellow stripes is the equipment-grounding conductor. If repair or replacement of the electric cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live terminal. Check with a qualified electrician or service personnel if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if in doubt as to whether the tool is properly grounded. Use only 3-wire extension cords that have 3-prong grounding plugs and 3-pole receptacles that accept the tool s plug. Repair or replace damaged or worn cord immediately. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from tool before turning on. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents. DON T USE IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENTS. Don t use power tools in damp or wet locations, or expose them to rain. Keep work area well lighted. ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES. Everyday eyeglasses only have impact resistant lenses; they are NOT safety glasses. Also use face or dust mask if cutting operation is dusty. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets, or other jewelry that might get caught in moving parts. Nonslip footwear is recommended. Wear protective hair covering to contain long hair. DON T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp and clean for best performance and to reduce the risk of injury. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. DISCONNECT TOOL before servicing; when changing accessories, such as blades, wheels, cutters, and like. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES. Consult the operating manual for recommended accessories. The use of improper accessories may cause risk of injury to persons. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further use of the tool, a guard or other part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting, and any other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced. DO NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM MATERIAL SPECI- FICATIONS. DO NOT OPERATED UNIT WITHOUT GUARDS IN PLACE OR GUARDS NOT IN WORKING ORDER. DO NOT PERFORM MAINTENANCE OR ADJUST- MENTS WITH POWER ON.
