SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS WORK AREA 1. Keep your work area clean and well lit: Cluttered benches or dark areas invite accidents. 2. Do not operate instrument in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gasses or dust. Motors create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. 3. Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away while operating instrument. Distractions can cause you to loose control. ELECTRICAL SAFETY 4. Grounded equipment must be plugged into an outlet properly installed and grounded in accordance with all codes and ordinances. Never remove the grounding prong or modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adaptor plugs. Check with a qualified electrician if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. If the instrument should electrically malfunction or break down, grounding provides a low resistance path to carry electricity away from the user. 5. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electrical shock if your body is grounded. 6. Do not abuse the cord. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords increase the risk of electrical shock. PERSONAL SAFETY 7. Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operating instrument. Do not use instrument while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating instrument may result in serious personal injury. 8. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts. 9. Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is off before plugging in Wheaton Industries Inc. 5
10. Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning instrument on. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the tool may result in personal injury. 11. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balances enables better control of the instrument in unexpected situations. 12. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. INSTRUMENT USE AND CARE 13. Do not use instrument if switch does not turn it on or off. Any equipment that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. 14. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the instrument. Such preventative safety measures reduce the risk of starting the instrument accidentally. 15. Store idle equipment out of reach of children and other untrained persons. 16. Maintain instrument with care. Do not use damaged equipment. Tag damaged equipment Do not use until repaired. 17. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the instrument s operation. If damaged, have the instrument serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained equipment. 18. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one instrument may become hazardous when used on another instrument. SERVICE 19. Instrument service must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. Service or maintenance performed by unqualified personnel could result in a risk of injury. 20. When servicing an instrument, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instructions in the Maintenance section of this manual. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow Maintenance Instructions may create a risk of electric shock or injury. If the instrument is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the protection provided by the instrument may be impaired Wheaton Industries Inc. 6
INTRODUCTION The Wheaton Overhead Stirrer is designed specifically for use with Wheaton Potter- Elvehjem and tapered tissue grinders with Teflon pestles. The precision adjustable chuck will accommodate most pestles and mixing rods with ¼" diameter shafts. The Overhead Stirrer features a solid state speed controller and heavy duty drive motor to provide ample power and speed for most laboratory applications. In addition to facilitating power homogenization operations, the Overhead Stirrer is ideal for general laboratory mixing operations using the optional swivel blade paddle. A speed range of 300 5,000 (under load) RPM gives the Wheaton Overhead Stirrer a high degree of versatility for a broad range of applications. The unit is housed in an attractive enamel finish aluminum cabinet which is both durable and stain resistant. An aluminum rod and clamp are included for attachment to a support stand. Scientists and associates alike will appreciate the reliability and durability of the Wheaton Overhead Stirrer Wheaton Industries Inc. 7
SAFETY SYMBOLS USED IN THIS MANUAL AND ON THIS PRODUCT A Warning symbol indicates attention to an operation which can cause operator injury, improper function of or damage to the instrument and possible problems with the process. An Electrical danger symbol indicates attention to an operation which could cause electrocution or severe injury Wheaton Industries Inc. 8
OPERATION (refer to fig. A) 1. Carefully unpack unit, being sure to save the box and packing materials to facilitate returning the unit in the event it should require servicing. 2. The instrument should be located in an area where AC power is conveniently available. 3. Mount the stirrer to a laboratory stand using the provided clamp (6). NOTE! A LABORATORY STAND IS NOT INCLUDED WITH THE UNIT 4. Open the keyless chuck (3) by holding the end closest to the stirrer cabinet and turning the end with the opening clockwise (as viewed from above) and insert shaft of pestle or paddle. 5. Making certain the shaft is inserted straight into the chuck, tighten chuck securely by holding the end closest to the stirrer cabinet and turning the end with the opening counter-clockwise (as viewed from above). Tighten securely. WARNING! NEVER INSERT GLASS SHAFTS INTO THE CHUCK, AS INJURY MAY RESULT. 6. Connect the unit to a suitable source of AC power. 7. Turn the unit on by rotating the speed control knob (17) clockwise until a slight click is felt. Provided the unit is connected and operating properly, the indicator lamp (18) will light. 8. Adjust the speed control knob until the desired rotational speed is obtained. Turn the speed control knob clockwise to increase stirrer speed, or counterclockwise to decrease stirrer speed. NOTE: THE RUNNING TORQUE OF THE MOTOR IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE MOTOR SPEED. 9. It is recommended that stirrer speed be increased gradually to avoid possible damage to samples or splashing. 10. Turn stirrer off when not in use and always unplug when changing pestles or paddles. WARNING! NEVER ATTEMPT TO INSERT OR REMOVE SHAFTS FROM THE CHUCK WHILE THE UNIT IS PLUGGED IN Wheaton Industries Inc. 9
