6 SHOES WITH ESD, ANTISTATIC AND ELECTRO- INSULATING PROPERTIES: WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOU? The electrostatic discharge of your safety shoes is of utmost importance if you work in hazardous areas where an explosive atmosphere may occur or when working with sensitive electronics. The right safety shoes make sure that the electrostatic charge that builds up while moving, is conducted to the ground in a controlled manner. This prevents electric charges from spiking and possibly resulting in an uncontrolled discharge. Wearing the wrong shoes may entail serious safety risks: sensitive electronics can be damaged and if this leads to an electric spark, an explosion could even occur. Depending on your work environment, choose your shoes according to the level of electrical resistance needed: ESD (Electro Static Discharging) safety shoes ESD shoes have a very low electrical resistance (between 0.1 and 100 (MΩ), measured in accordance with BS EN : 2002 (IEC :2001)). ESD safety shoes are specifically designed to conduct the electrostatic charge to the ground in a continuous manner, in order to avoid powerful, uncontrolled charges. This is important in areas where there is a high risk of explosion (ATEX zones). ESD safety shoes are not suitable for activities on electrical installations. Antistatic shoes Safety shoes EN 345 and EN ISO20345:2012 as of category S1 always have an antistatic sole with a contact resistance between 105Ω and 109Ω. This offers primary protection against dangerous electric shocks when working on mains electricity up to maximum 250 Volt AC (Alternating Current). Antistatic shoes are not suitable for activities on electrical installations. Electro-insulating shoes Basic S1, S2 and S3 safety shoes have, conform the standard, antistatic properties, which is functional in many situations (see above). However, these properties may be dangerous for activities on electrical installations. In this type of environment, electro-insulating safety shoes and boots conform EN are used (class 00 up to maximum 500 Volt AC and class 0 up to maximum 1000 Volt AC). These shoes make the well-known insulating floor mat superfluous. Not only is it highly practical, it also contributes to general workplace safety. 9 S3 & S1P SHOES Safety shoes offer protection against the risks that your feet face in the workplace. Safety shoes are made of leather or a synthetic material of equal value and must have a composite, steel or aluminium safety toecap that protects your feet against the impact of heavy objects. This means that the built-up static electricity is conducted to the ground in a controlled way. These shoes have a closed heel with a shock absorber for maximum comfort. 16 S2 SHOES Class S2 safety shoes are mainly used in the following industries: food, hotel and healthcare. Equal to other safety shoes, these have a composite, steel or aluminium safety toecap as well, which protects your feet against the impact of heavy objects. Class S2 safety shoes also have antistatic properties, which means that built up static electricity is conducted to the ground in a controlled manner. Furthermore, these shoes have a closed, shock absorbing heel for maximum comfort. Especially important is the water-repellent and antibacterial upper in microfibre. Not only to protect your feet from getting wet, but also to make the shoes easily washable. The outer sole is oil and petrol resistant. 18 EUROPEAN STANDARDS FOR SAFETY AND WORK SHOES The current EN ISO standards for work and safety footwear have been listed by the European Union and determine the requirements that both safety footwear (S for Safety) and occupational footwear (O for Occupational) must comply with. Both standards, EN ISO for safety footwear and EN ISO for occupational footwear, have different safety classes. Below you can find a complete overview of the minimum requirements each safety shoe needs to comply with. 19 PROPERTIES Below you can find more information on the most important properties of the safety shoes in our Proteq range. This information will help you choose the correct safety shoe to match your specific work situation. Our suppliers only use high quality materials that attribute to the shoe s durability and comfort. You often have the choice between various types of materials that stand out through their unique properties and advantages, but they all have one thing in common: they meet the highest safety requirements. A safety toecap is one of the requirements for a shoe to be classified as safety footwear ( S = Safety). The cap protects your toes from an impact up to 200 joule. The protective cap can be made of steel, composite (synthetic material), or aluminium. The safety toecap perfectly protects your toes from the risks you may encounter in your workplace. The steel safety toecap is a classic in the world of safety shoes. Steel safety toecaps offer a better protection against direct impact than composite noses and are more advantageous. SOLE The sole is an important part of a safety shoe. Proteq safety shoes all have outsoles with an innovative, slip resistant profile for better grip. In addition they are light, extremely elastic and therefore almost unbreakable. They are both heat resistant (short contact) and oil and petrol resistant. The Proteq outsoles are made of abrasion resistant, non-marking rubber, PU or TPU material. s biggest advantage is that it is much lighter than steel. This property makes safety shoes much more comfortable so you do not even notice that you are wearing safety footwear. Moreover, composite safety toecaps are non-conductive, this is not only a main advantage if you work with electricity, but also in warm or cold environments. It keeps your feet warm in winter and cool and dry during summer. Lastly, composite is non-magnetic which is useful if you work in areas where you often have to pass metal detectors. Abrasion resistant rubber soles are sturdy and heat resistant upon short contact until 300 C. They protect your feet from the penetration of sharp objects and are petrol, oil and chemical proof. PU (polyurethane) ensures better grip and higher durability. These soles are abrasion and heat resistant upon short contact up to 130 C. Like rubber soles, these are oil and petrol resistant. The major advantage of PU soles in comparison to rubber soles is that they are much lighter and especially supple which makes them more comfortable to wear. TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) has elevated elastic and abrasion resistant properties. The properties of TPU soles are similar to those of PU soles but they have an even better abrasion resistance. A safety shoe s upper is the part that is most subject to the dangers in the workplace. It can be made of different types of materials which all have their advantages. has been used for centuries thanks to its durable and water resistant properties. It also gives the shoe a sturdy and robust look. Textile has the advantage that it is light and more elastic than leather, which makes the shoe more flexible and therefore more comfortable. It also makes the shoe more breathable. LINING A shoe s lining is not only important for user comfort, but also for moisture absorption. It absorbs among others sweat while keeping out any type of liquids. In addition, the lining ensures that your feet can breathe while working all day. The shoes in the Proteq range all have a durable and abrasion resistant lining. This lining is made of leather or textile (e.g. Plasmafeel or Thinsulate ), which both have their advantages: is very comfortable and durable; Textile has an even higher moisture absorption capacity than leather: - Plasmafeel is very durable and even more abrasion resistant. Your feet remain cool and dry as this technology is well-known for its remarkably breathable capacity and its immediate moisture absorption. - Thinsulate TM lining has a superb insulating effect: it keeps your feet warm during cold weather conditions and keeps the heat out during warm days, the result: cool and dry feet. SAFETY Synthetic material (microfibre) is water repellent, antibacterial and easily washable. Rubber and PVC are waterproof and keep your feet dry. A safety midsole protects your foot soles against penetration of sharp objects like nails and pieces of broken glass. Nowadays, safety midsoles are made in such a way that they barely impact the walking comfort. They can be made of steel or synthetic materials: The traditional steel safety midsole is more resistant against penetration. The major advantage of synthetic safety midsoles is that they are lighter and offer more comfort

20 SHOE CARE In order to keep your shoes looking good and to make them last longer, it is important that you look after them. Below are some tips that will help them last longer! New shoes need to be brushed, polished and impregnated before use: Start by brushing your shoes using a shoe brush. Our shoes should not be machine washed, this dries the leather out and causes it to shrink. If your shoes are subjected to harsh, wet environments we recommend that you use shoe / leather grease. If your shoes are wet when you take them off, you should wipe them down with a damp cloth. Apply either a neutral shoe polish or one that matches the colour of your shoes. Apply a thin, even coating and use a cloth, brush or even a nylon stocking to distribute the polish evenly. Take time to let the polish work into the leather. Brush your shoes again. Should you want to freshen up your shoes, there is a simple yet effective trick: This makes them last longer and stay supple and water resistant. Do this regularly. This is especially important during the winter months when your shoes are subjected to snow and slush. The better you maintain your shoes, the longer they will last! Let them dry at room temperature. If they dry too quickly there is a risk that the leather dries out and cracks. When completely dry you should brush, polish and impregnate them again. Do not use shoe polish if your shoes contain suede or nubuck leather. Just use a suede brush. Impregnate your shoes using an impregnating spray, or an impregnating cream for leather shoes. Pay particular attention to seams and edges. Wipe off any excess shoe polish and brush the surface. For added shine use a shine polish that matches the color of your shoes The shoes have only been buffed before leaving the factory. To make them last longer, it is advisable to brush and polish your shoes once a week and to impregnate them at regular intervals. Simply remove the insoles and machine wash them at 40 degrees. Do not tumble dry, just place the insoles on a radiator to dry. You can easily clean the surface of your shoe using a damp cloth and a mild soap if necessary. Never use acetone or other solvents. To get into the crevices around the sole, an old tooth brush will do the trick. For stain removal on suede / nubuck use a suede eraser. Once cleaned, use a suede spray to freshen up. If your shoes are heavily soiled you can use a suede shampoo. 5 6 Protect the counter. Always use a shoe horn when putting your shoes on, and always undo laces and straps before removing them. This way you protect the counter from getting stepped on and subsequently worn down. Our soles are made of rubber and PU (polyurethane). A material that ages over time. This aging process is something that we as a manufacturer have to take into consideration as we bear an environmental responsibility for the production of our products. Like with a dried out rubber band or an old car tire, the degeneration process kicks in when the product is left unused. The rubber becomes stiff and more likely to crack or even crumble. This process actually evolves much faster if the shoes are left unworn than if the material is allowed to work. How you store your shoes also affects the degeneration process. Avoid storing them in direct sunlight or fluctuating temperatures. PU is very durable, light and shock absorbing, and the products made with PU are long lasting and very comfortable. We recommend that you store your shoes at room temperature and wear them regularly to prevent them from breaking due to non-usage
