15 Safety instructions If the machine is not going to be used for a long period of time, recharge the battery before storing. From time to time recharge the battery for a short period of time, to prevent it from running down. Store the battery separately in the plastic case. Discharging the battery Not only charging batteries is important, discharging is of equal importance or even greater importance. When the battery is charged the machine has to be used until you start noticing that the power is diminishing and that the maximum rotational speed is not reached. The battery is almost discharged now. Only now can you start charging the battery. If you charge the battery while it is still charged for say one-third of capacity, the so-called memory effect can occur. Since during charging only the discharged part of the battery capacity of the battery is being charged now, the battery can start crystallizing in the one-third that is still charged. This part of the battery capacity can never be used afterwards. Do not discharge the battery to the minimum. As soon as you notice that the power or the maximum rotational speed is diminishing, you have to charge the battery. When you proceed using the drill and the battery becomes fully discharged, the so-called switch of poles effect can occur. The polarity of the battery poles will be switched: the + will become - and the - will become the +. Once this has occurred the polarity will remain switched during loading and this will damage the battery irreparable. When the machine is not being used over a longer period of time, the battery has to be charged fully first. The battery has to be stored in a charged condition. 19 Angle grinder operation the workpiece or of a broken accessory may fly away and cause injury beyond the immediate area of operation. j) Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only, when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Cutting accessories contacting a live wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool live and shock the operator. k) Position the cord clear of the spinning accessory. If you lose control, the cord may be cut or snagged and your hand or arm may be pulled into the spinning accessory. l) Never lay the power tool down until the accessory has come to a complete stop. The spinning accessory may grab the surface and pull the power tool out of your control. m) Do not run the power tool while carrying it at your side. Accidental contact with the spinning accessory could snag your clothing, pulling the accessory into your body. n) Regularly clean the power tool s air vents. The motor s fan will draw dust inside the housing and excessive accumulation of powdered metal may cause electrical hazards. o) Do not operate the power tool near flammable materials. Sparks could ignite these materials. p) Do not use accessories that require liquid coolants. Using water or other liquid coolants may result in electrocution or shock. Kickback and Related Warnings Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched or snagged rotating wheel, backing pad, brush or any other accessory. Pinching or snagging causes rapid stalling of the rotating accessory which in turn causes the uncontrolled power tool to be forced in the direction opposite to the accessory s rotation at the point of the binding. For example, if an abrasive wheel is snagged or pinched by the workpiece, the edge of the wheel that is entering into the pinch point can dig into the surface of the material causing the wheel to climb out or kick out. The wheel may either jump toward or away from the operator, depending on the direction of the wheel s movement at the point of pinching. Abrasive wheels may also break under these conditions. Kickback is the result of power tool misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below. a) Maintain a firm grip on the power tool and position your body and arm Model Number: PAC-18/4K 19 CDM6180 Ma-GB-IRE indd 19 8/10/11 10:32:34 AM

20 Angle grinder operation to allow you to resist kickback forces. Always use the auxiliary handle, if provided, for maximum control over kickback or torque reaction during start-up. The operator can control torque reactions or kickback forces, if proper precautions are taken. b) Never place your hand near the rotating accessory. Accessories may kickback over your hand. c) Do not position your body in the area where power tool will move if kickback occurs. Kickback will propel the tool in the opposite direction to the wheel s movement at the point of snagging. d) Use special care when working corners, sharp edges etc. Avoid bouncing and snagging the accessory. Corners, sharp edges or bouncing have a tendency to snag the rotating accessory and cause loss of control or kickback. e) Do not attach a saw chain woodcarving blade or toothed saw blade. Such blades create frequent kickback and loss of control. Safety Warnings Specific for Grinding and Abrasive Cutting-Off Operations: a) Use only wheel types that are recommended for your power tool and the specific guard designed for the selected wheel. Wheels for which the power tool was not designed cannot be adequately guarded and are unsafe. b) The guard must be securely attached to the power tool and positioned for maximum safety, so the least amount of wheel is exposed towards the operator. The guard helps to protect operator from broken wheel fragments and accidental contact with wheel. c) Wheels must be used only for recommended applications. For example: do not grind with the side of cut-off wheel. Abrasive cut-off wheels are intended for peripheral grinding, side forces applied to these wheels may cause them to shatter. d) Always use undamaged wheel flanges that are of correct size and shape for your selected wheel. Proper wheel flanges support the wheel thus reducing the possibility of wheel breakage. Flanges for cut-off wheels may be different from grinding wheel flanges. e) Do not use worn down wheels from larger power tools. Wheel intended for larger power tool are not suitable for the higher speed of a smaller tool and may burst. Additional Safety Warnings Specific for Abrasive Cutting-Off Operations: a) Do not jam the cut-off wheel or apply excessive pressure. Do not attempt to make an excessive depth of cut. Overstressing the wheel increases the loading and susceptibility to twisting or binding of the Model Number: PAC-18/4K 20 CDM6180 Ma-GB-IRE indd 20 8/10/11 10:32:34 AM

21 Angle grinder operation wheel in the cut and the possibility of kickback or wheel breakage. b) Do not position your body in line with and behind the rotating wheel. When the wheel, at the point of operation, is moving away from your body, the possible kickback may propel the spinning wheel and the power tool directly at you. c) When the wheel is binding or when interrupting a cut for any reason, switch off the power tool and hold the power tool motionless until the wheel comes to a complete stop. Never attempt to remove the cut-off wheel from the cut while the wheel is in motion otherwise kickback may occur. Investigate and take corrective action to eliminate the cause of wheel binding. d) Do not restart the cutting operation in the workpiece. Let the wheel reach full speed and carefully reenter the cut. The wheel may bind, walk up or kickback if the power tool is restarted in the workpiece. e) Support panels or any oversized workpiece to minimize the risk of wheel pinching and kickback. Large workpieces tend to sag under their own weight. Supports must be placed under the workpiece near the line of cut and near the edge of the workpiece on both sides of the wheel. f) Use extra caution when making a pocket cut into existing walls or other blind areas. The protruding wheel may cut gas or water pipes, electrical wiring or objects that can cause kickback. Special safety instructions Check that the maximum speed indicated on the grinding disc corresponds to the maximum speed of the machine. The speed of the machine must not exceed the value on the grinding disc. Make sure that the dimensions of the grinding disc correspond to the specifications of the machine. Make sure that the grinding disc has been mounted and fastened properly. Do not use reducing rings or adapters to make the grinding disc fit properly. 25 Jigsaw operation Special safety instructions 1. Check the following points: Has the saw lost any teeth and is it showing cracks or fractures? If so, replace the saw immediately. Is there enough room under the workpiece so that the saw does not come into contact with the floor or work table as it moves up and down? Do the teeth of the saw point upwards? 2. Always wear protective goggles when using the appliance. 3. Maintain the appliance carefully. 4. Do not use the appliance in a wet environment. 5. Do not use the appliance for material which contains asbestos. 6. Never leave the jigsaw unattended. Using the appliance 1. Clamp the workpiece that you will be sawing firmly into place. 2. Remove any wood residue that is near the saw or stuck to the surface of the saw; do not use your hand for this. Switch the appliance off before removing any residue! 3. Always switch the jigsaw on in idle, i.e. switch the saw on before bringing it into contact with the workpiece. 4. When sawing the wood watch out for knots, nails, cracks and/or dirt deposits. These can cause the saw to jam dangerously. Also watch out for this with waste wood. This often requires less careful sawing, so there is a danger that you may not be quite so careful about watching out for irregularities in the wood. 5. Do not saw workpieces that are thicker than the length of the saw. 6. Do not touch metal parts of the jigsaw when sawing in walls or floors in which there could be electricity cables. Hold the jigsaw tightly with both hands on the plastic grip so that you do not touch parts that could become live if you accidentally saw through an electricity cable. 7. When you have finished sawing, switch off the appliance first and wait until the saw comes to a standstill before removing it from the workpiece. 8. Do not use long extension cables. 9. Keep the plastic guard in place while the saw is in use. Model Number: PAC-18/4K 25 CDM6180 Ma-GB-IRE indd 25 8/10/11 10:32:35 AM

26 Jigsaw operation Assembling saw To assemble the saw, proceed as follows: 1. Loosen the two socket head screws at the front with the Allen key supplied. 2. Place the saw in the saw buckle (6). Make sure that the teeth point upwards and forward. The smooth side of the saw must rest against the wheel. 3. Push the saw as far into the buckle as possible. 4. Secure the saw by tightening the two socket head screws again. Make sure that the socket head screws are tightened evenly so that the saw blade sits correctly in the saw buckle. A crooked blade can result in an unsatisfactory cut. Adjusting the bottom plate Adjust the angle of the bottom plate (3) as follows: 1. Loosen the socket head screw (7) with the Allen key supplied. 2. Move the bottom plate forward slightly to unlock it. 3. Turn the bottom plate to the right or left in the desired sawing angle. You can read this on the protractor. The maximum sawing angle is 45º. 4. Push the bottom plate backward again to interlock it. 5. Tighten the socket head screw again. Operation Start: Depress the on/off trigger (1) and, at the same time, depress the trigger locking button (2). Stop: Release the on/off trigger. Model Number: PAC-18/4K 26 CDM6180 Ma-GB-IRE indd 26 8/10/11 10:32:35 AM

27 Torch operation Operation Switch on and off the torch with the sliding-switch (1) Point the swivel action head in the desired direction (2) Replacing the bulb Remove the ring (3) by turning it anti-clockwise Remove the transparant glass Pull the bulb gently Replace the bulb with the same type (18 V/8 W) Model Number: PAC-18/4K 27 CDM6180 Ma-GB-IRE indd 27 8/10/11 10:32:35 AM

28 Maintenance Mains plug replacement If the moulded 3-pin plug attached to the unit is damaged and needs replacing, it is important that it is correctly destroyed and replaced by an approved BS 1363 fused plug and that the following wiring instructions are followed.
