CHART 1 Gross consumption of natural gas by OECD region 250 200 Billion cubic meters 150 100 50 OECD Asia Oceania OECD Europe OECD Americas 0 Jul 15 Nov 15 Mar 16 Jul 16 Nov 16 Mar 17 Jul 17 Nov 17 Mar 18 Jul 18 Total OECD indigenous production of natural gas increased by 8.1% in July 2018 compared to July 2017. The increase was driven by the OECD Americas (+9.5% y o y 1 ), where production in the United States grew by 11.6% y o y. OECD Asia Oceania s growth (+4.0% y o y) was largely driven by Australia s 5.3% y o y growth. OECD Europe also grew (+4.4% y o y) as Netherlands production recovered by 31.0% y o y. Overall, total OECD production grew by 7.2% in July 2018 on a y t d 2 basis. Total OECD imports (entries 3 ) of natural gas fell by 2.9% in July 2018 versus July 2017. Imports declined in all OECD regions led by OECD Europe ( 2.0% y o y), in absolute terms, followed by the OECD Americas ( 7.9% y o y), and OECD Asia Oceania ( 2.7 % y o y). The decline in OECD Europe s imports stemmed from reduced entries from Russia, down 17.0% y o y. Total OECD exports (exits 3 ) of natural gas grew by 7.9% in July 2018 versus July 2017. Exports grew in all OECD regions with the OECD Americas up 10.7% y o y, OECD Asia Oceania up 19.7 % y o y, and OECD Europe up 4.5% y o y. The growth across the OECD was driven by Australia (+19.7% y o y) and the United States (+22.0% y o y), both of which broke new records for LNG exports. Total OECD gross consumption of natural gas increased by 1.2% in July 2018 compared to July 2017, driven by the OECD Americas (+6.1% y o y), where consumption in the United States increased by 9.5% y o y or 5.8 billion cubic meters. Consumption fell in both OECD Europe ( 7.2% y o y) and OECD Asia Oceania ( 3.8% y o y). Notable drivers of this trend were Germany and Australia, where consumption fell by 22.4% and 21.6% y o y, respectively. Overall, total OECD consumption grew by 5.0% in July 2018 on a y t d basis. 1. Year on year (y o y) change over corresponding month of previous year. 2. Year to date (y t d) change over corresponding period (beginning of year to current month) of previous year. 3. NOTES Please note that all IEA data are subject to the following Terms and Conditions found on the IEA s website: http://www.iea.org/t&c/termsandconditions/ 1) ESTIMATED DATA Due to the absence of official data, the following data have been estimated: Israel January 2010 to July 2018 2) COUNTRY NOTES Australia Austria Belgium Canada Starting from January 2017 gas/diesel oil and motor gasoline closing stock data reflect the inclusion of new companies in the Australian data collection system. The breakdown of export destinations is estimated by the IEA on the basis of OECD imports of natural gas from Australia. Most recent data are the best estimates from the Austrian national administration, based on available preliminary data. Data are usually finalised within three months following the first publication. Most recent data on origins of imports and final destinations of exports of LNG are the best estimates from the Belgian Administration based on available preliminary data. Data for Canada are submitted by the Department of Natural Resources (Natural Resources Canada, or NRCan), based on actual and preliminary data from Canada's national statistical agency (Statistics Canada) and various other sources. In cases where data from these sources are unavailable, estimates are conducted by NRCan, based on information available at the time, including alternative sources. Data are usually finalised within three months of the first publication. An important source for any differences between data published by Statistics Canada and data published by the IEA is data estimated by NRCan or the IEA Secretariat. Iceland Ireland Israel Korea Mexico There is no natural gas data for Iceland, as there is neither production nor consumption. There is a break in stocks between December 2016 and January 2017, caused by withdrawal of cushion gas from storage facilities due to the decommissioning of operations. As of May 2017 there is no gas stored in Ireland. The statistical data for Israel are supplied by and under the responsibility of the relevant Israeli authorities. The use of such data by the OECD is without prejudice to the status of the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem and Israeli settlements in the West Bank under the terms of international law. Information is based on data published by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources as well as the Central Bureau of Statistics. Following a change in reporting methodology, starting from January 2015 gross inland deliveries (observed) of Observed gross inland deliveries of natural gas from January 2013 onwards are estimated. United Kingdom Beginning with January 2016, exits to the Isle of Man are reported under Non Specified/Other. Prior to this date, exits to the Isle of Man were included in exits to Ireland.
