UNIVERSAL DETACHABLE ACCESSORY FOR BIKES A Report by GAURAV JODHANI Under Supervision of Mr. ASHWINI SHARMA (Assistant Professor) ITM University Gurgaon

In India, where parking and road space is limited, this type of car-scooter hybrid is likely to get a lot of attention as commuters are exploring new, more convenient types of personal transport. A fully covered vehicle is better than two wheelers in many aspects safeguarding us from hot, cold or rain from any whether and comfortable ride but those who doesn t want to switch over to such vehicles for they love riding this kind we have brought a solution a detachable accessory for two wheelers which allows to switch over to a covered bike whenever required. Figure 2: Problem faced by two wheeler user 1.3 Objectives 1. To design & prototype the covering accessory for a two wheeler. 2. To fabricate the fully validated final assembly. 3. To test the final fabricated assembly. 1.4 Application The accessory can be applied to various two wheelers available in the automobile market. We have tried to incorporate ample space for two with enough additional space for groceries etc. the accessory offers more weather protection than any other available two wheeler, yet all the parking, accessibility and agility advantages of a small motorcycle. The windscreen and roof completely eliminate wind-roar around the helmets and allow good communication with the pillion. During the rainy season motorcyclist and the passenger get wet in two main ways - the rain from the front of them as they traverse through the air and the rain that falls on them when they are at traffic lights and stationary. Figure 4: Auto Motor Corporation Product The stability of three wheels combined with an integrated roof design to allow the rider to feel the breeze while being protected from the elements its available at $3800 (Rs 2.11lakhs), the Auto Moto comes with a one year standard Limited Power Train Warranty. CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY 3.1 Introduction This chapter incorporates the process adopted to feasibly design and fabricate the proposed prototype. Idea generation Analysing the problem, and developing the possible solutions Feasibility check Screening of various possible solutions considering technical, economical, manufacturing, marketing and psychological aspects. Selecting a suitable idea Designing Collecting required information (mechanism & dimension) Design calculations Modelling and prototyping using solid works Modifications Market Survey prototyping Developing a prototype model of the design finalised. Feasibility check Testing the prototype technically and aesthetically Making the suitable modifications in the design Fabrication Fabrication of finalised model with configurations. 5.8.1 Problems The major limitation of this design is that the side covering installation is difficult with a tapered frame. Thus, the side winds produces control related problems. 5.8.2 Redefining the problem Now the focus was to develop a model incorporating the mechanisms that would help overcome the limitations of the seventh design. The side winds are the major limitation of the seventh design. This was the reason for controlling problems at high speed. A mechanism has to be incorporated for side covering which can be installed with a tapered frame. A more durable and light weight solution to this problem was required. 5.9 Eighth design The eighth design developed was incorporating a side covering mechanism to avoid the motorcycle controlling problems imposed due to the side winds. The polycarbonate sheets are attached to the supporting structure. The frame has been designed to be clamped to the leg guard of the bike (similar to the sixth design) instead of clamping it to the steering axle (seventh design). The length adjustment is incorporated within the frame using the same mechanism as used in the sixth design. Two different cross section square tubes are used for this purpose. The size of the frame is larger than that for the seventh design. UNIVERSAL DETACHABLE ACCESSORY FOR BIKES Page 37

Figure 48: First Prototype with driver 7.2.3 People interaction After the prototype was completed, it was installed on a motorcycle and tested. The reviews and feedbacks of teachers, users and by-passers have been listed: 1. Many people liked the concept and the design of the accessory. 2. Some people questioned the size of the accessory and the related issues like the mobility of the bike in high traffic regions. The accessory should not restrict the rider to drive freely. 3. Some people argued about the durability of the side cover. 4. The aesthetics of the designed prototype were not attractive to some users. 5. The users faced no visibility problems. 6. Some users reported bike control issues at high speeds of about 60km/hr. 7. Few people were willing to install this model on their bikes. UNIVERSAL DETACHABLE ACCESSORY FOR BIKES Page 54

Figure 56: Third Prototype with rider 7.4.2 People interaction According to people interaction the following outcomes came: 1. No issues related to stability and bike control were reported by the users even at high speeds. 2. Many people liked the concept and the design (aesthetics) of the accessory. 3. The main frame and the side covers did not impose any visibility problems to the users. 4. Many people were willing to install this model on their bikes. 5. No incidents of collision with the frame during braking or passing through bumps and speed breakers were reported. 6. The shape of the frame is aerodynamically better.
