PV GRID Forum, Stockholm, April 26. 2013 Experiences from Denmark Kenn H. B. Frederiksen Presentation About EnergiMidt General status PV and grid interconnection Some of the R&D projects. 1

About EnergiMidt EnergiMidt is a multiutility company in the mid Jutland region of Denmark (electricity, broadband, district heating ) Front figure in the Danish PV sector Energy consultancy services +100 mill. kwh. savings per year Co operative structure +200.000 customers 850 employees PV is a part of the Danish R&D 2

Installed PV capacity in Denmark Denmark sourced 1% of the world market of PV modules in 2012 Source: energinet.dk Senaries for PV installations 3

New PV tarif in Denmark 1 Eurocent = 7,5 øre New PV tarif in Denmark 4

Value chain Value of own consumbtion from the PV plant is depending of PV owner (private house holds app.0,3 EUR/kWh, public buildings app. 0,2 EUR/kWh, Industry app. 0,1 EUR/kWh) FIT M2 = 0,17 EUR/kWh Consumbtion profile 2012/ standard PV production 5

Own consumbtion 7,2 kwp PV plant, 6 kwp inverter, tilt 37g due south 6.697 kwh pr. year Interconnection rules and requirements (low voltage) Technical requirements for generating plants below 16 amp. pr. phase Technical requirements for generating plants higher than 16 amp. pr. phase 6

Interconnection rules and requirements (low voltage) Approved inverters below 16 amp. pr phase Between 16 and 75 amp single line diagram is needed. Above 75 amp. Detailed analys is needed System larger than 1,5 MVA is considered to be connected to middel voltage level Interconnection rules and requirements (low voltage) 7

Interconnection rules and requirements (low voltage) The aim with the investigation was to give an qualified answer to how much PV could be installed in 1 family houses before the 0,4 kv network will see overvoltage eg. voltage within ±10% of Unom. There has not been focus other voltage quality parameters like harmonics and flicker. PV and grid impact Dansk Energi PV and voltage issues in low voltage networks 8

PV and grid impact Dansk Energi PV and grid impact Dansk Energi Calculations has been made on 10 kv powerlines and underlaying low voltage network a total of 1110 stk. 0,4 kv feeder lines has been analysed. The analyse has been made by the use of hourly PV and network data and sums up 8760 grid calculations. The calculations has been made for PV penetrations levels of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. The analysis has been made in NetBas and is based on real network from one utility. 9

PVNET.dk The given grid electric framework of Bornholm is illustrated to the right. The present peak load is about 55 MW and it is proposed to plan for a penetration of about 5 MW of grid connected PV corresponding to a PV penetration of about 9%. The European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) sees 12% of EU s electricity feasible by 2020 for PV and this is the so called Paradigm Shift Scenario. According to this the PV capacity could be extended in the future to 7MW or above if it is considered suitable. PVNET.dk PV integration into the grid without reinforcement of the grid Smart Grid functionality Ancillary services integrated in the inverters (grid voltage control, reactive power, frequency stability, etc.) Power system stability support (voltage stability, small signal stability (oscillations), frequency stability etc.) 11

Task 14: Overall objectives of this international collaboration Promote the use of grid connected PV as an important source in electric power systems also on a high penetration level where additional efforts may be necessary to integrate the dispersed generators in an optimum manner. Develop and verify mainly technical requirements for PV and electric power systems to allow for high penetrations of PV systems interconnected with the grid Discuss the active role of PV systems related to energy management and system control of electricity grids Reduce the technical barriers to achieve high penetration levels of distributed renewable energy systems on the electric power system High Penetration of PV Systems in Electricity Grids, Task 14 More information: www.iea pvps.org 12
