February 2015, Volume 17, No. 3 New Trax Added to Chevrolet s 2015 U.S. Lineup The all-new 2015 Trax, now Chevrolet's smallest SUV, offers the agility of a compact car with a 100.6-inch wheelbase, but with up to 48.4 cubic feet of cargo space in three trim levels: LS, LT and LTZ. Here are some of the features of the newest 2015 Chevrolet. continued on page 2 Techline News GDS 2 Enhances Vehicle Selection Functionality The Global Diagnostic System (GDS) 2 recently received several enhancements with the latest core application update. The new functions make it easier for technicians to select and build a vehicle in GDS 2. Look for these new functions in the recent February 9 software update release. Launch GDS 2 from the TIS2Web home page to get the update. TIP: It is important to always update the GDS 2 scan tool when new versions are released. Notification of diagnostic package updates will appear on the home page of GDS 2. Click the Update button to download. New Trax continued from page 1 1.4L 4-Cylinder Turbo The only available engine is a turbocharged 1.4L 4-cylinder engine (RPO LUV) that features a cast-iron block and an aluminum cylinder head. It has double overhead cams, variable valve timing and four valves per cylinder. With a compression ratio of 9.5:1, the engine provides 138 hp at 4900 rpm and 148 lb-ft of torque between 1,850 and 4,900 rpm. The EPA-estimated fuel economy is 26 mpg city, 34 mpg highway (FWD) or 24 mpg city, 31 mpg highway (AWD). Regular unleaded fuel is recommended. All Trax models use an electronically controlled, automatic overdrive 6-speed 6T40 transaxle with an electronically controlled torque converter clutch. RPO MH8 is used on the front-wheel drive (FWD) model and RPO MHB is used on the 1.4L 4-cylinder engine (RPO LUV) all-wheel drive (AWD) model. DEXRON -VI automatic transmission fluid should be used in both transmissions. The AWD system, available on all trim levels, provides extra traction and maneuverability. The automatically engaging system seamlessly splits torque between the front and rear wheels when required, for better traction and handling. When it isn t needed, the AWD system automatically shifts into FWD to maximize efficiency. Steering and Suspension A MacPherson strut front suspension is used with coil-over springs, a direct-acting large stabilizer bar, and side-load-compensated front strut modules with a steel 6-point rigid attachment front cross member. The rear suspension features a compound crank (torsion beam) design, with a double-wall, tubular V-shape beam profile and gascharged twin-tube shocks, that combines all the advantages of a conventional torsion beam axle, including minimal space requirements, with low weight and consistent camber control. Noise-damping urethane spring isolators dampen noise. FWD and AWD models feature a rack-and-pinion gear (straight ratio) with a direct-acting, column-mounted electric power steering system that helps save fuel by drawing energy only when the steering wheel is turned. The FWD Trax has antilock brakes (ABS) with front disc brakes with ventilated rotors and rear drum brakes. The AWD Trax has ABS with four-wheel disc brakes with ventilated front rotors and solid rear rotors. Brake features include electronic brake force distribution as well as cornering brake control and brake assist. Electronic brake force distribution optimizes the distribution of force to each of the four wheels during braking while driving through turns, depending on the radius of the turn. The StabiliTrak electronic stability control system incorporates traction control and rollover mitigation features. The body structure of the Trax forms a protective cage around the passenger compartment, with 66 percent of it composed of highstrength steels, including ultrahigh-strength steel in strategic areas. It also features a class-best 10 standard air bags. Wheel Options The LS FWD model uses 16 x 6.5-inch steel wheels with wheel covers. The LS AWD model and LT model use 16 x 6.5-inch aluminum wheels. Trax has 10 standard air bags. The LTZ model uses 18 x 7-inch aluminum wheels. P205/70R16 ALS and P215/55R18 AL3 tires are used, depending on wheel size. The tire pressure monitor 16-inch and 18-inch wheels are available. system (TPMS) uses radio and sensor technology to check tire pressure levels. The TPMS sensors monitor the air pressure in the tires and transmit tire pressure readings to a receiver located in the vehicle. Infotainment Technology Standard technology includes the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch (178-mm) diagonal color touch screen, with a Rear Vision Camera (RVC) and 4G LTE with built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. 4G LTE with the built-in Wi-Fi hotspot enables the connection of up to seven multiple personal devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets to high-speed wireless Internet. The hotspot is on whenever the vehicle is on Standard equipment includes the MyLink system with a 7-inch diagonal color touch screen and Rear Vision Camera. and comes with a three-month/three-gigabyte data trial (whichever comes first). The system includes Bluetooth streaming audio for music and select phone, as well as Pandora, TuneIn radio and Stitcher. Other infotainment features Siri Eyes Free for iphone ios 6, ios 7 and ios 8 users, which enables voice-controlled connectivity so customers can keep phones stored and their hands on the wheel. continued on page 3 2 February 2015

New Trax continued from page 2 The available BringGo app brings smartphone-enabled navigation that can be displayed on the large MyLink screen, and allows using the touch screen to control the navigation. The MyLink system offers several available apps. Electrical Power Management The vehicle has electrical power management that estimates the battery's temperature and state-of-charge. Electrical power management adjusts the voltage for best performance and extended life of the battery. When the battery's state-ofcharge is low, the voltage is raised slightly to quickly bring the state-of-charge back up. When the state-of-charge is high, the voltage is lowered slightly to prevent overcharging. If the vehicle has a voltmeter gauge or a voltage display on the Driver Information Center (DIC), the driver may see the voltage move up or down. This is normal. Electrical power management works to prevent excessive discharge of the battery. It does this by balancing the generator's output and the vehicle's electrical needs. It can increase engine idle speed to generate more power, whenever needed. It can temporarily reduce the power demands of some accessories. Normally, these actions occur in steps or levels, without being noticeable. At the highest levels of corrective action, this action may be noticeable to the driver. Special Tools The following tools were released for the 2015 Trax: DT-50839 Transmission Adapter Plate Bushing Replacer DT-50840 Input Shaft Seal Installer DT-50937 Spline Protector-IDS Shaft Seal at Right Ext Housing DT-50985 IDS Excluder Seal Installation into IDS Flange Thanks to Ange Girolamo Identifying Aftermarket Calibrations before Warranty Repairs When alterations to GM engine or transmission control module calibrations are made by owners, it subjects powertrain and driveline components (the engine, transmission, transfer case, driveshaft and rear axle) to stresses that were not tested by GM. These unknown stresses have the potential to alter reliability, durability and emissions performance. GM is identifying an increasing number of engine, transmission and catalytic converter part failures due to non-gm aftermarket calibrations. As a result, GM has adopted a policy that prevents any unauthorized warranty transaction submissions to any remaining warranty coverage to the powertrain and driveline components whenever the presence of a non-gm calibration is confirmed, even if the non-gm control module calibration is subsequently removed. TIP: GM requires retrieving the calibration information and performing the calibration verification procedure whenever a hard part failure may have occurred on internal engine components before disassembly, repair or replacement of an engine assembly under warranty. It is also strongly recommended that the calibration verification procedure be performed whenever diagnostics indicate that transmission, transfer case, rear axle or catalytic converter replacement is needed. If a non-gm calibration is found and verification has taken place through GM, the remaining powertrain and driveline warranty may be blocked and notated in Global Warranty Management (GWM) and the dealership will be notified. This block prevents any unauthorized warranty claim submission. Verification Procedures Refer to the following GM Bulletins for the procedures to identify the presence of non-gm/aftermarket calibrations. Bulletin # Subject Models 09-06-04-026 Identifying Non-GM (Aftermarket) Engine Calibrations for Gasoline Engines Using Tech 2 or GDS 2 08-06-04-006 Information for Identifying Non-GM ECM Calibration Use and Power-up Hardware Detection in Duramax Diesel Engines Photograph Tech 2 Screens 14-06-04-003 Identifying Non-GM ECM Calibration Use and Powerup Hardware Detection in Duramax Diesel Engines Using GDS 2 Screen Shots Correct GM calibrations must be confirmed with a picture or screen shot of the proper calibration verification screen. The shots are required in order to process an engine/transmission/drivetrain hard part warranty transaction. Refer to the applicable service bulletin for the specific vehicle being repaired for information on how to retrieve and save the required Tech 2 or GDS 2 screen shots before disassembly or removal of engine/transmission/drivetrain components from the vehicle. Use TIS2Web to download the correct version of the software for the vehicle that is being programmed. After USB programming has been completed, reprogram the HMI module using SPS with the latest calibrations available on TIS2Web. The vehicle modules must go to sleep for five minutes after programming the HMI module. TIP: For infotainment system RPO IO5, a production change in the software changes the Navigation icon (NAV) display to the NAV OnStar icon display. Thanks to Hassan Abdallah XM Audio, Radio Lock-Up and other Audio Conditions There may be several radio conditions present on some 2015 LaCrosse, Regal, ATS, CTS sedan (VIN A), ELR, Escalade models, SRX, XTS, Corvette, Impala (VIN 1), Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Sierra, and Yukon models equipped with infotainment system RPOs IO3, IO4, IO5, or IO6. These audio conditions may include: Slow response tuning to XM stations Poor radio reception Time shift rewind/pause button highlighted but does not function Radio lock-up when the clock screen mode is activated If the audio source is changed right before turning off the ignition, the next ignition cycle may not have any audio Removal of vertical line between clock and temperature No XM audio, returns on next ignition cycle An updated software calibration has been released to address these conditions. Reprogram the radio using the Service Programming System (SPS) with the latest calibrations available on TIS2Web. TIP: The IO3 infotainment system may take 2-plus hours to complete programming. Due to the length in programming, a wired Internet connection is preferred. When programming the IO3 infotainment system, do not let the TIS2Web computer go to sleep during the programming event. The vehicle modules must go to sleep for five minutes after programming the Human Machine Interface (HMI) module. If not, the vehicle may have a blank screen, no audio, no touch response, or the wrong splash screen may appear on the screen. If this happens, turn off the vehicle and wait the required five minutes before starting vehicle again. Thanks to Hassan Abdallah be disabled until all necessary information is entered correctly and the proper selections are made. Once GDS 2 is processing a task, the message bar will be yellow and display the current activity. Once the green message bar appears, indicating vehicle data has been loaded, the Enter button will be enabled. The VIN entry is optional. If a VIN is not entered, a session name will be created using the following format: NO VIN YY MM DD HH MM SS. Session File Error Red message bar indicates user action is needed. Green message bar indicates vehicle data has been loaded. Sessions can become corrupt through normal usage when portions of a file fail to save properly, similar to any Windows application files. In the Vehicle Selection area, if there is one or more corrupted session files detected when GDS 2 is attempting to load a vehicle, a message will be displayed stating the invalid session has been detected and either the most recent valid session will be loaded or that GDS 2 is unable to load the session. Corrupted sessions will be marked with an exclamation point in the stored sessions file. The exclamation point column appears only when a corrupted session is detected by GDS 2. If an invalid session is detected during import, the session will be removed and will not appear in the stored sessions file. Value Source The Value Source column provides the user with information about how the data was obtained based on the source. For example, In the Selected Vehicle area or the Stored Data Review, the source may be the VIN. Or in the Value Source column provides source information. Selected Vehicle Configuration, the source may be the RPO. Always update the GDS 2 scan tool diagnostic package to the latest version available; and anytime a communication condition is encountered, verify the latest update is being used.
