Spray Run-Up Control Kit (<4 0 ma Version) Instruction Sheet46-87 Page SPRAY RUN-UP CONTROL KIT ( 4-0 ma Version) DESCRIPTION Consiste~t adhesive spray patterns can be produced with Nordson CF-00 automatic extrusion guns during production line speed variations with a Spray Run-Up Control Kit (PIN 699). The desired spray pattern is maintained by adjusting the air pressure used to fiberize the adhesive. This Spray Run-Up Control Kit is limited to a maximum of 0 CF-00 modules (not guns). A basic equipment configuration is illustrated in Figure. Kit components include an air regulator and a current-to-pressure transducer. The transducer receives a 4-0 rna signal from a Nordson PC-0 Pattern Controller or a similar signal-generating device. NOTE: For proper Spray Run-Up Controller operation, the PC-0 Pattern Controller must be equipped with a run-up module and the correct backplate. An encoder must be mounted on the parent machine in such a way that it accurately re~ster~ speed of the substrate on the line. Refer to the PC-0 Pattern Controller technical manual for information. Instruction Sheet 46-87 Page Spray Run-Up Control Kit (4-0 ma Version) SPRAY RUN-UP CONTROL KIT INSTALLATION WARNING: Hot melt application systems contain electrical potentials that can be fatal. Disconnect and lock out input electrical power to the hot melt applicator before attempting any installation, re placement or repair of the equipment. Only qualified personnel should install, operate and maintain this equipment. WARNING: Wear safety gloves, safety glasses and protective clothing to prevent injury from hot melt applicator parts, splashed hot melt adhesive and hot gun surfaces. WARNING: Refer to your equipment operating manual for the proper procedures to relieve the residual pneumatic pressure, followed by the appropriate electrical and pneumatic system disconnections. r- +- 0 0 -ti. Using the mounting hole pattern illustrated in Figure, mount the Spray Run-Up Control cabinet in a convenient location as close to the air heater as possible. Bleed off residual pneumatic system air pressure prior to connecting the Air Run-Up Controller. Failure to relieve residual pressure may result in serious injury. Only qualified personnel should install, operate and maintain this equipment. 3. Run a lf4 inch NPT air line (not supplied) from the Spray Run Up Control air outlet (item, Figure 5) to the air connection on the air heater. NOTE: A minimum f4 inch NPT air line to the air heater is required to ensure proper operation. 4. Connect the Spray Run-Up Control control cable (item 30, Figure 5) to the keyed fitting (marked by the symbol...!... } at the rear of the PC-0 Pattern Controller cabinet. 5. Apply input air pressure to the inlet of the Spray Run-Up Control. TRANSDUCER SET UP AND CALIBRATION. Turn off the PC-0 Pattern Controller at the main switch.. Remove the run-up module and place Switch 3- and Switch 3- (Figure 3) in the Up position by pushing the top part of both switches in.. 3. Reinsert the module in the card cage and set the AUTO/ MANUAL switch (Switch, Figure 3) to MANUAL by setting the pushbutton to the out position. Turn on the PC-0 Pattern Controller at the main switch and check the output pressure from the transducer at the transducer gauge. a. Output pressure should read 0 psig (0 kpa). b. Obtain correct pressure by turning the Zero Adjust screw (Figure 4) until output air pressure equals 0 psig (0 kpa). NOTE: Turning the transducer's Zero Adjust screw counterclockwise increa$es flow; turning the Zero Adjust screw clockwise dec~atet the flow. Turn off the PC-0 Pattern Controller at the main switch, remove the run-up module and, by pushing the bottom of the switch in, place Switch 3- in the Down position. NOTE: Leave Switch 3- in the Up position. 6. Reinsert the run-up module, then turn on the PC-0 Pattern Controller at the main switch. a. Check the transducer output air pressure at the transducer gauge. Air pressure should be 50 psig (344. 7 kpa). b. Adjust the transducer Span Adjust to obtain the correct output air pressure. Spray Run-Up Control Kit (4-0 ma Version) Instruction Sheet 40-87 Page 5 7. Repeat Steps -6, adjusting the transducer Zero and Span controls as necessary until output air pressure is correct at both Switch 3- and Switch 3- settings. When both pressure readings are correct, replace the covers on the transducer and Air Run-Up Control cabinet. 8. Ensure that run-up module switches 3- and 3- are both in the Up position. If either switch is not in the Up position, turn the PC-0 off at the main switch, remove the run-up module and press the top part of the switch(es) to set the switches to the UP position. PC lo CALIBRATION FOR APPLICATION. Set the PC-0 Pattern Controller AUTO/MANUAL switch (Switch, Figure 3) to AUTO.. With the production line off, (i.e., speed=o) adjust the MIN OUTPUT potentiometer until a small amount of air exits the gun (approximately -3 psi/6.9-0.7 kpa on gauge). A minimal air flow is required at zero line speed to ensure that gun nozzles remain adhesive-free. 3. Start the production line and obtain the maximum line speed required for the application. When the line speed reaches 3.3 feet per minute ( meter per minute), the yellow LED above the AUTO/MANUAL switch lights, indicating that the module is operational. NOTE: The ru.n-up module is not affected by the khz clock on the gear-to-line module boards. Consequently, the line must be run to make these adjustments. NOTE: If the encoder has been set up for English system calibration, the yellow LED lights when line speed reaches 8.3 feet per minute (.6 meters per minute). 4. Increase/decrease the MAX OUTPUT potentiometer setting on the PC-0 Pattern Controller until the pattern reaches the desired appearance (pattern width). Publication No. 07 996A ~ Nordson Corporation 989
Instruction Sheet 46 87 Page6 Spray Run-Up Control Kit (4 0 ma Version) NOTE: The MAX OUTPUT potentiometer is a dual range potentiometer (see Figure 3) which is controlled by Switch (Range). With Switch in, the potentiom~ter operates in the HIGH range; with Switch out, the potentiometer operates in the LOW range. Most applications require that the switch be placed in the LOW range position (switch out) NOTE: The red LED (upper left of potentiometer) lights when maximum output for a given line speed is reached. If the LED lights before the adhesive pattern achieves the desired appearance, it may be necessary to recalibrate the transducer for higher pressure operation. 5. Run the production line at various slow speeds, comparing the patterns produced: a. If the pattern narrows as line speed decreases, increase the MIN OUTPUT adjustment. Repeat the calibration process from Step. b. If the pattern widens as line speed increases, then decrease the MIN OUTPUT adjustment. Repeat the calibration process from Step. 6. The run-up module is now ready for operation. Nordson Corporation 989 All Righls Reserved Publication No. 07 996A
