Before you begin installation allow transmission to cool to avoid burns from hot fluid or parts. Select a well-lighted work area and it is very important to keep all parts clean. Use a box or pan to keep transmission parts from getting misplaced. Wash parts thoroughly with a good solvent. STEP 1 Drain oil pan. Dispose of the used fluid in an environmentally responsible manner. STEP 2 Remove transmission pan. STEP 3 Remove existing valve body by locating and removing eight (8) 3/8 hex head bolts. STEP 4 Disassemble transmission as necessary to remove detent spring. Late model transmission cases have this detent spring which is located under the inside shift linkage. (See PHOTO 1) Remove the flat detent spring by removing the 1/4 hex head bolt. (See PHOTO 1A) Your new TCI TransBrake Valve Body has the detent inside the valve body.

3 STEP 5 Locate the rectangular pad on the modulator side of the transmission case. (See PHOTO 4) Drill a hole 7/16 diameter in the center of the rectangular pad. This hole will be drilled completely through the transmission case. Deburr hole and remove aluminum shavings before continuing. STEP 6 Place the transmission case with the pan side on the work table. Using a ¼ -18 pipe tap, tap the 7/16 drilled hole. This step should be performed slowly so not to tap the hole too big. Test fit the case connector until it s snug with the threads 3/16-1/4 above the case. Remove all aluminum shavings. (See PHOTO 4, 4A, 4B, and 4C)
4 STEP 7 If you are not using a stock transmission, it is necessary to inspect the intermediate servo. All TCI Full Manual Transmissions have modified servo pistons and the case has been modified. (See PHOTO 2) The modified servo piston will have flat areas ground on the sealing edge and the O-ring has been removed. You must replace with a OEM unit and use O-ring. Refer to (PHOTO 2). We have marked (PHOTO 3) to show location on the case where an 1/8 Allen head plug was in- stalled for the Full Manual Valve Body. (See PHOTO 3) Remove this plug. STEP 8 Remove and disassemble Reverse-High Clutch Drum assembly. NOTE: three (3) clutch pack drum assembly cannot be used. If you have this type, you must replace with a four (4) pack drum assembly. Before reinstalling Drum assembly check clutch pack clearances. Clearances should be.060-.070. STEP 9 Reinstall transmission components into transmission. STEP 10 Remove kick throttle arm and shaft. Install the plug provided to seal the hole. STEP 11 Install TCI TransBrake. Make sure that the manual control valve is properly aligned to the inside shift linkage Use only six (6) hex head bolts to secure the valve body to the case. Torque bolts to 10 foot pounds STEP 12 Connect Valve Body Solenoid Wire to the Case Connector installed in transmission. STEP 13 Reinstall transmission gasket and pan. Note: If you are not using a stock shallow pan, check clearance between pan and filter. You must use a car filter and not a truck filter when using a stock pan.
STEP 14 Remove push-in type modulator and install modulator freeze plug in its place. (Do not remove modulator valve.) 5 STEP 15 Reinstall all linkage and fittings. STEP 16 Fill transmission with 4-5 quarts of Automatic Transmission Fluid before starting engine. TCI recommends our MAX SHIFT fluid that is formulated for high performance use. After the engine and transmission has warmed up check fluid level in transmission. Add additional fluid if needed. Fluid line should be even with Full mark on transmission dip stick. DO NOT OVERFILL THE TRANSMISSION. STEP 17 Install Micro Button and connect TransBrake Wire to a fully charged 12-volt power supply.
