of 9 Nissan Frontier, Xterra 1998-05 Multi-Function Switch REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Fig. Multi-function switch component locations 1998-2000-2000 shown Before servicing, or working around, the SRS system, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three minutes. When servicing, or working around, the SRS system do not work directly in front of the air bag module. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section. Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable. Remove the side lids, located on the steering wheel. Remove the right and left side special (Torx) bolts.

of 9 8. 9. 10. 1 1 1 1 1 Lift up on the air bag module. Disconnect the air bag harness connectors. Remove the air bag module. Be sure the steering wheel is positioned in the neutral position. Disconnect the horn connector from the steering wheel (floating horn bracket). Release the spiral cable connectors from the steering wheel by sliding off the connector brackets. Remove the steering wheel locknut. Using a steering wheel puller, remove the steering wheel. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. Remove the knee protector, if equipped. Disconnect the spiral cable connector from the air bag harness. Loosen and remove the spiral cable retaining screws. Remove the spiral cable. Do not disassemble the spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable. 1 1 Each switch can be replaced without removing the multi-function switch base. To remove the multi-function switch base, remove the base retaining screws. Fig. Combination switch removal points-1998-2000 To install: Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

of 9 Be sure the front wheels are position the front wheels in the straight ahead position. Align the turn signal cancel tab with the notch of the combination switch (see illustration). Rotate the spiral cable fully (clockwise) until tight. Rotate the spiral cable (counterclockwise) approximately 5 turns from the neutral position if the vehicle is equipped with power steering and approximately 0 turns from the neutral position if the vehicle is not equipped with power steering. Align the white pin with the arrow on the housing. When the spiral cable is centered, the white pin is aligned with the arrow on the housing and the yellow wheel shows in the window. The spiral cable may snap during steering operation if the spiral cable is installed in an improper position. Also, with the steering linkage disconnected, the cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the specified number of turns. Always perform the SRS self diagnostics check after installing the air bag module. Fig. Spiral cable adjusting mark-1998-2000

of 9 Fig. Spiral cable alignment points-1998-2000 8. 9. 10. 1 1 Connect the spiral cable to the air bag harness and tighten the screws. Install the steering column covers. Install the steering wheel. Tighten the retaining nut to 22-29 ft. lbs. When reinstalling the air bag module, be sure to use new bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure. Conduct the self diagnosis test to ensure the entire SRS system operates properly. Use the CONSULT-II or equivalent to perform this operation. Turn The steering wheel fully to the right and left to check that the spiral cable is set in the neutral position. If the -AIR BAG- warning lamp blinks (in user mode) it shows that the spiral cable may be snapped due to improper positioning. Perform the self diagnosis test again with the CONSULT-II or equivalent. Correct as required. 2001-2004

Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. Remove the knee protector, if equipped. Disconnect the spiral cable connector from the air bag harness.

of 9 1 Loosen the spiral cable retaining screws. Remove the spiral cable. Do not disassemble the spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable. With the steering linkage disconnected, the spiral cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns. The spiral cable can be turned counterclockwise about 5 turns from the right end position. 1 1 Each switch can be replaced without removing the multi-function switch base. To remove the multi-function switch base, remove the base retaining screws. Fig. Combination switch removal points-2001-2004 To install: Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Be sure to align the spiral cable correctly when installing the steering wheel. Make sure that the spiral cable is in the neutral position. The neutral position is detected by turning to the left 5 revolutions from the right end position and ending with the knob at the top. The spiral cable may snap due to steering operation if the cable is installed incorrectly. Also, with the steering linkage disconnected the cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns (5 from the neutral position to both the left and right).

of 9 1 Fig. Spiral cable adjusting mark-2001-2004 Tighten the steering wheel retaining nut to 22-29 ft. lbs. When reinstalling the air bag module, be sure to use new bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON and make sure that the air bag warning lamp blinks. After removing/installing or replacing ABS control unit, steering angle sensor, steering components, suspension components, and tires, or after adjusting wheel alignment, make sure to adjust the neutral position of the steering angle sensor before running the vehicle. On 2003-2004 vehicles, reset the steering angle calibration by adjusting the steering angle sensor neutral position as follows. To adjust the neutral position of steering angle sensor, make sure to use the CONSULT-II. (Adjustment cannot be done without CONSULT-II.) 8. Be sure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Connect the CONSULT-II and CONSULT-II CONVERTER to the data link connector on the vehicle, and turn the ignition switch ON (do not start engine). If the CONSULT-II is used with no connection of the CONSULT-II CONVERTER, malfunctions might be detected in self-diagnosis depending on the control unit which carry out CAN communication. 9. 10. Touch -ABS-, -WORK SUPPORT- and -ST ANGLE SENSOR ADJUSTMENT- on the CONSULT-II screen in this order. Touch -START-. Do not touch the steering wheel while adjusting the steering angle sensor.

of 9 1 1 After approximately 10 seconds, touch -END-. (After approximately 60 seconds, it ends automatically.) Turn the ignition switch OFF, then turn it ON again. Be sure to carry out above operation. 1 1 1 1 Run the vehicle with the front wheels in the straight-ahead position, then stop. Select -DATA MONITOR-, -SELECTION FROM MENU-, and -STR ANGLE SIG- on the CONSULT-II screen. Then make sure -STR ANGLE SIG- is within 0 ±5 deg. If the value is more than specified, repeat steps 3 to Erase memory of the ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit) and the ECM. Turn the ignition switch OFF. 2005 Fig. Wiper/washer switch location and removal points-2005

of 9 Fig. Headlight and turn signal switch location and removal points-2005 Before servicing, or working around, the SRS system, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three minutes. When servicing, or working around, the SRS system do not work directly in front of the air bag module. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section. Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable. Remove the steering column covers. Disconnect the switch electrical connector. If removing the wiper/washer switch, pinch the tabs at the switch base and slide the switch away from the steering column to remove it. If removing the headlight/turn signal switch, while pinching the tabs, pull the switch toward the driver-s door and release it from the steering column. Back to Top
