C ( F) The intake air temperature sensor is built into the air cleaner and senses the intake air temperature. A thermistor built in the sensor changes the resistance value according to the intake air temperature. The lower the intake air temperature, the greater the thermistor resistance value, and the higher the intake air temperature, the lower the thermistor resistance value (See Fig. ). The intake air temperature sensor is connected to the engine ECU (See below). The 5 V power source voltage in the engine ECU is applied to the intake air temp. sensor from terminal via resistor R. That is, resistor R and the intake air temperature sensor are connected in series. When the resistance value of the intake air temperature sensor changes in accordance with changes in the intake air temperature, the potential at terminal also changes. Based on this signal, the engine ECU increases the fuel injection volume to improve driveability during cold engine operation. Read freeze frame data using handheld tester. Because freeze frame records the engine conditions when the malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting it is useful for determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, the engine was warmed up or not, the airfuel ratio was lean or rich, etc. at the time of the malfunction. When using handheld tester: Connect handheld tester, and read value of intake air temperature. (a) Connect the handheld tester to the DLC3. (b) Turn the ignition switch and push the handheld tester main switch. Read the temperature value on the handheld tester. : Same as actual intake air temperature. S If there is open circuit, handheld tester indicates 40 C (40 F). S If there is short circuit, handheld tester indicates 40 C (84 F) or more. 40 C (40 F)... Go to step 40 C (84 F) or more... Go to step 4. Check for intermittent problems (See page DI 7).
DI3 EINE (JZGE) Check for open in harness or engine ECU. A00347 A00348 (a) Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor connector. (b) Connect the sensor wire harness terminals together. (c) Turn the ignition switch. Read the temperature value on the hand held tester. : Temperature value:40 C (84 F) or more Confirm good connection at sensor. If, replace intake air temperature sensor. 3 Check for open in harness or engine ECU connector. (a) Remove the engine ECU hood and cover. (b) Connect between terminals and of the engine ECU connector. The intake air temperature sensor connector is disconnected. Before checking, do a visual and contact pressure check for the engine ECU connector (See page 34). IN Read the temperature value on the hand held tester. : Temperature value:40 C (84 F) or more FI7057 A735 A734 Open in harness between terminals or, repair or replace harness. Confirm good connection at engine ECU. If, check and replace engine ECU (See page IN34).
EINE (JZGE) DI33 4 Check for short in harness and engine ECU. A0036 A00363 (a) Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor connector. (b) Turn the ignition switch. Read the temperature value on the hand held tester. : Temperature value:40 C (40 F) Replace intake air temperature sensor. 5 Check for short in harness or engine ECU. Z8 Connector Z8 Connector (a) Remove the engine ECU hood. (b) Disconnect the Z8 and Z8 connector from the engine ECU. The intake air temperature sensor connector is disconnected. (c) Turn the ignition switch. Read the temperature value on the hand held tester. : Temperature value:40 C (40 F) FI7056 A736 A738 Repair or replace harness or connector. Check and replace engine ECU (See page IN34).
