Model 8111-8112 Torque Multiplier OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Page 1 of 6, REV. B The Sweeney 8111 and 8112 Torque Multipliers provide maximum power for breakaway and maximum speed for run-off of large threaded assemblies. Both operate most effectively with Sweeney designed anchors and sockets that always turn the nut and hold the bolt. Design features of the 8111 and 8112 include: Splined output for maximum strength 360 continuous rotation both directions Dual input both sides Four speeds (when used with pneumatic drive) Manual or pneumatic operation Anti-backlash brake system 360 Rotatable Protractor 1. DESCRIPTION 1-1. The Sweeney Models 8111 and 8112 Torque Multipliers are high ratio; triple reduction gear mechanisms providing power multiplying means for loosening and tightening threaded assemblies that demand high torque values. Each model is designed with an internal splined drive that connects to sleeve sockets with are specially designed for each application. Anchor pins are located on each face of both models for versatility of anchoring. 1-2. Because of the high gear ratios, each model is equipped with both a primary and secondary input for convenience (secondary input on front only). Note: The primary and secondary inputs rotate in opposite directions. 1-3. As a safety consideration, an automatic brake system prevents the output from turning the input. (See section 3-2 for comments on brake testing.) 2. CAUTIONS AND WARNINGS 2-1. Test automatic brake system prior to every use. This automatic brake system prevents the output from turning the input. 2-2. Use extreme caution when operating the Torque Multiplier with faulty brakes. See Section 3-2. 2-3. Repair, overhaul, or calibration must be done by the factory. Do not disassemble the unit in the field. 3. OPERATION 3-1. Anchor Information. When using the 8111 and 8112 Torque Multipliers, a method must be provided to react the torque being applied to the threaded element. It is preferable to locate this anchor near the threaded element. Whatever means of anchoring is employed, the anchor must mate to the anchor pins of the multiplier. The anchor must be solid with minimum deflection and designed to be perpendicular to the axis of the threaded element to insure proper alignment of the torque multiplier. The anchor should be properly designed for each application. Consult the Sweeney Division for design information.

Page 2 of 6, REV. B 3-2. To test brake, torque the primary input to 80 ftlbs with a torque wrench; then gently release. If the torque wrench remains stationary, the brakes are in good working order. If the wrench rotates back at a moderate to fast rate, the torque multiplier should be returned to the factory for brake overhaul at the earliest opportunity. USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN OPERATING THE TORQUE MULTIPLIER WITH FAULTY BRAKES. This test should be conducted with every use of the tool. 3-3. Optional Equipment: Additional smaller torque multipliers may be connected to either input to reduce the required input torque to achieve high output torques. Model 8202A Air Torque Multiplier provides two speeds which, when added to the primary and secondary input option, result in four distinct torque ratios and eliminate the need to react the input torque. Only one mechanic is required when this tool is used with the 8111 and 8112 Torque Multipliers. The correct sequence in going from the highest torque (slowest output speed) to the lowest torque (Highest output speed) is: A. Low speed output of Model 8202 to primary input. B. Low speed output of Model 8202 to secondary input. C. High speed output of Model 8202 to primary output. D. High speed output of Model 8202 to secondary input. Note: When changing from primary to secondary inputs, the rotation of the 8202 output must be reversed. Also, the high and low outputs of the 8202 rotate opposite of each other. Always check the rotation of the output to be used before mounting. 4. CALIBRATION 4-1. Each unit in field service should be calibrated once every year by Sweeney factory personnel and equipment. If unit is used on a continuous or daily basis, this may dictate calibration every six to nine months. To determine the proper calibration cycle for a particular usage, consult Sweeney, Denver, Colorado. 5. MAINTENANCE 5-1. Each torque multiplier is adequately lubricated at the factory for normal service between overhauls and/or calibration cycles. No additional lubrication is required during field service. 5-2. Care should be exercised when using the tool to protect it from external damage and corrosive environments. 5-3. Inspect the torque multiplier and other optional tools at each use for cracks in the housing casings. These parts are subjected to a high degree of stress when in use, no attempt should be made to repair cracks or any damage which has seriously weakened the structural integrity of the part. Return to factory for part replacement. Minor scratches burrs, or nicks may be removed by a fine cut file or stone. 5-4. A unit in need of repair, overhaul or calibration MUST be returned to the factory. Any unit disassembled will require recalibration. DO NOT disassemble the unit in the field.
