Fig. 1 SHEER BRILLIANCE An elegant combination of sheer fabric with soft fabric vanes, Luminette Privacy Sheers provide all the radiance of a sheer and privacy. Unmatched Light Control The soft fabric vanes create sheer magic with the twist of a wand. By rotating the vanes from completely open to completely closed, or to any increment in between, your customers can enjoy a level of light control never before possible in a sheer. Two Sheer Face Fabrics The face fabric is available in two distinct styles. Angelica is a traditional elegant sheer, while Linéa is a soft texture which accents the vertical lines of the product. Both fabrics are 100% polyester for durability and easy care. Each fabric style has its own palette of 12 colors that range from neutral to soft, subtle tones. The 100% polyester vanes are a neutral white, providing a uniform appearance to the home s exterior (Fig. 1). The vanes are permanently bonded to the rear of the face fabric. Finished Fabric Header The sheer fabric is topped by a tailored 5" fabric header, which is an integral part of the softly A tailored 5" header tops the sheer fabric. Fig. 2 sculptured fabric folds (Fig. 2). This unique design conceals the operating mechanism when the sheer is drawn closed. Bottom Finish Luminette sheers feature a crisp, neat bottom finish that is designed to resist fraying. Product Summary.............. LU-1 Pricing...................... PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS SofTrak System The exclusive SofTrak system from Hunter Douglas is designed for reliability and ease of operation. The scissors on top of the sleek, low-profile rod expand (Fig. 3a) or compress (Fig. 3b) when the cord is pulled to cover or uncover the window opening. The scissors ensure consistent vane spacing. The scissors expand to cover the opening. The scissors compress to uncover the opening. Fig. 3b Fig. 3a The SofTrak system also includes a mechanism for vane rotation. Turning the wand rotates the pinion clips on the fabric carriers to open and close the vanes (Fig. 4). The vanes can be rotated from fully closed in one direction to fully closed in the other, or can be stopped at any position in between. SCISSOR ARMS Combination Wand and Cord Our innovative combination wand and cord allows your customer to use a single control to traverse the fabric or rotate the vanes (Fig. 5). Automatic Vane Alignment The SofTrak system also features automatic vane alignment. If a vane becomes misaligned, it can easily be repositioned. Using the wand, simply rotate the vanes first to one side, and then to the other to realign the vanes. Design and Mounting Versatility Luminette sheers are available in side stack or split stack designs. Side stacks may be specified to draw open to the left or right side; split stacks draw open to both sides equally (Fig. 6). Either type of design can be mounted inside or outside the opening. LEFT STACK Fig. 6 ROTATE VANES RIGHT STACK TRAVERSE FABRIC Fig. 5 Wand Placement With side stack designs, the wand must be placed on the side where the fabric stacks. With split stack designs, the wand may be placed on either side. Unobstructed view when sheers are stacked back. Soft, diffused light when sheers are drawn closed and vanes are open. Partially private view when vanes are slightly rotated. SOFTRAK ROD FABRIC CARRIER SPLIT STACK PINION CLIP Complete privacy when vanes are closed. Light transmission through the closed sheer is the equivalent of a semi-opaque honeycomb fabric. SHEER FABRIC ATTACHED TO FRONT EDGE OF VANE SOFT FABRIC VANE Fig. 4 LU-3

MEASURING GUIDELINES Accurate Measurements Are Always Essential Fabric width and height cannot be adjusted after the product is manufactured. All measurements should be rounded down to the nearest 1 8" for proper fit and operation. For example, 3 16" would round to 1 8". Do not make any deductions for inside mounts. Inside Mount A minimum casement depth of 1" is needed for bracket attachment, and a casement depth of 6 1 4" is required to fully recess the sheer. Protruding window cranks should be replaced with T-cranks. A. Measure the width at the top of the opening (Fig. 10a). The top width is critical for proper operation of the SofTrak system. B. Measure the height at the left, center and right of the opening. Order the shortest measurement. Note: The factory will take a 3 4" height deduction to allow 1 4" top clearance and 1 2" bottom clearance. INSIDE MOUNT A B B B Fig. 10a Outside Mount A 1 1 8" minimum flat vertical surface is needed for bracket attachment. A. Measure the desired width at the center of the opening (Fig. 10b). Important: A minimum 4" overlap on each side is recommended to minimize potential light gaps. Alternatively, the fabric may be aligned with window moldings or other design features. To measure the width for a sheer that fully uncovers the opening when drawn back, see the section on stackback on pages LU-8 and LU-9. B. Measure the desired height at the center of the opening. A 1 1 8" minimum flat vertical surface above the opening is required to accommodate the installation brackets. When the fabric does not hang to the floor, a minimum 4" overlap is recommended below the opening. When the fabric hangs to the floor, we recommend that your measurements allow for a 1 2" bottom clearance. Note: The factory will take a 1 4" height deduction for top clearance. OUTSIDE MOUNT A B 4" 4" TO FLOOR 4" OVERLAP OF WINDOW Fig. 10b When measuring for top overlap, note that the fabric header is 5" high. Plan the installation so that placement of the header will be aesthetically pleasing. If necessary, spacer blocks or extension brackets can be used on outside mount applications for additional clearance to avoid obstructions such as moldings or window handles. Corner Windows When two windows come together in the corner of a room, we recommend measuring and mounting Luminette Privacy Sheers as illustrated below. To Measure and Order Sheers for Corner Windows: 1. Measure the width of both openings to the common corner (Fig. 11). 2. Deduct 3" from the width of each measurement. Important: If spacer blocks ( 1 2" each, up to three for 1 1 2") or extension brackets (up to 3") will be used for extra clearance on outside mounts, add the amount of extra clearance to the 3" deduction. 3. Order the width less the 3" (or more) deduction. ACTIVE END CAP (WAND SIDE) ACTIVE END CAP (WAND SIDE) DEDUCT 3" 3" DEDUCT 3" If spacer blocks or extension brackets will be used for extra clearance on outside mounts, add the amount of extra clearance to the 3" deduction. Fig. 11 LU-7

MEASURING GUIDELINES Bay Windows With bay windows, locations of the sheers are marked as illustrated below, and the ordered width is measured using the marks (Fig. 12). To Measure Sheers for Bay Windows: 1. Cut two pieces of poster board 3 1 8" wide by 12" long. Important: If spacer blocks ( 1 2" each, up to three for 1 1 2") or extension brackets (up to 3") will be used for extra clearance on outside mounts, add the amount of extra clearance to the 3 1 8" width dimension of the poster board before measuring. 2. Place the strips in the left angle first, and bring them together until the front corners of the poster board meet. Mark points A and B. 3. Repeat this step for the right side angle, marking points C and D. 4. Measure between points B and C to obtain the width measurement of the center sheer. 5. Measure from point A outward to the desired width to obtain the width measurement of the left sheer. 6. Measure from point D outward to the desired width to obtain the width measurement of the right sheer. A B POSTER BOARD STRIPS If spacer blocks or extension brackets will be used for extra clearance on outside mounts, add the amount of extra clearance to the 3 1 8" width dimension of the poster board before measuring. Fig. 12 C D Side-by-Side (Abutted) Sheers When two or more sheers are ordered for a side-by-side installation, where the sheers will abut, use the guidelines below to allow for enough clearance between the rods for proper operation while minimizing the light gap between the sheers. To Measure and Order Two or More Sheers for a Side-By-Side Installation: 1. Measure the desired width of each sheer. 2. For outside mounts, order each sheer 1 8" less than its measured width to allow space for the SofTrak system to operate properly. No special deductions are necessary for inside mount applications. Measuring for Stackback (Outside Mounts Only) For a window or door opening to be fully uncovered when an outside mounted Luminette sheer is drawn open, the width of the fabric stack(s), called stackback, must be taken into account. The Stackback Chart is your tool to properly order sheers for fully uncovered openings. This chart can also be used to align the fabric stack(s) with moldings or other design features. The key is to measure the opening for the total desired uncovered width. Important: With side stack designs, the uncovered width measurement should include the amount of overlap desired on the side opposite the fabric stack. A minimum of 4" is recommended. Understanding the Stackback Chart The Stackback Chart at right includes ranges of measurements for Uncovered Width. Begin using the chart by locating your measurement in one of the ranges listed for either a side stack design (top chart) or split stack design (bottom chart). For example, for a side stack width of 81", locate the 80"-82 1 4" range in the top chart. The column to the right of Uncovered Width shows the Stackback width for the ranges of uncovered width. To determine what your should be, add the amount of stackback to your uncovered width measurement. For example, if your Uncovered Width for a side stack design is 72", the Stackback amount is 20 1 4". Add these two amounts together to determine the ordered width. In this case, the correct is 92 1 4". For a split stack design, if the Uncovered Width is 72", the Stackback amount is 11 5 8" for each panel, or 23 1 4" total. Thus, the correct is 95 1 4". Stackback Example The customer wants her 77" wide patio doors to be fully uncovered when her left stack Luminette sheer is drawn open. To minimize any light gap on the side opposite the fabric stack when the sheer is drawn closed, she wants 4" of overlap on the right side. 1. Opening Width + Overlap on Right Side: 77" + 4" = 81" 2. Uncovered Width Range for Side Stack Units: 80" - 82 1 4" 3. Stackback for Side Stack Units: 22 1 4" 4. The correct is the uncovered width plus the stackback: 81" + 22 1 4" = 103 1 4" LU-8

Stackback Measuring Procedures Follow these four easy steps: 1. Measure the desired uncovered width, rounding your measurement down to the nearest 1 8". With side stack units, include in this measurement the desired amount of overlap on the side opposite the fabric stack. A minimum of 4" is recommended. 2. Locate your measurement from Step 1 in one of the ranges in the Uncovered Width column on the Stackback Chart for either a side stack or split stack design. 3. Follow the line across to find the correct Stackback for that range. 4. Add the stackback to the desired uncovered width to determine the correct width to order. After determining the correct width to order, confirm that there is enough room to outside mount the sheer at that width. INSTALLATION Complete installation instructions are included with each order of Luminette Privacy Sheers. The purpose of the following guidelines is to help you discuss basic installation considerations with your customers. Three Basic Steps There are three basic steps in the installation process: 1. Mounting the installation brackets; 2. Attaching the SofTrak system to the installation brackets; and 3. Attaching the fabric panel(s) to the SofTrak rod. Each Luminette sheer includes all needed components and mounting hardware. The number of installation brackets and other types of mounting hardware depends upon unit width, as shown in the table below. Unit Width Number of Brackets Up to 44" 2 44 1 /8" - 81" 3 81 1 /8" - 118" 4 118 1 /8" - 155" 5 155 1 /8" - 192" 6 Phillips hexhead screws are provided with the installation brackets. Wall anchors or plugs are required when mounting to plaster, drywall, concrete, brick or tile. Bracket Spacing The installation brackets on the right and left ends (Fig. 13) should be positioned on the mounting surface so that their centerlines will be located 3 1 2" from the ends of the SofTrak rod. If more than two brackets are required, space the additional bracket(s) evenly between the end brackets. Mounting the Installation Brackets or Ceiling Mount Brackets Installation brackets are attached to the mounting surface in two applications: Outside mounts with no added clearance Outside mounts with spacer blocks Ceiling mount brackets are attached to the mounting surface in four applications: Outside mounts with extension brackets Inside mounts Ceiling mounts End mounts After the ceiling mount brackets are attached, installation brackets are snapped into them. Use a carpenter s level to check that the bottoms of the brackets are level on an outside mount, and that the mounting surface is level on an inside mount or ceiling mount. Important: For proper operation, it is essential that the SofTrak rod be mounted level. Outside Mount Applications With outside mounts, installation brackets are attached directly to the mounting surface. A flat vertical surface at least 1 1 8" high is required (Fig. 14). The brackets must be level and aligned at the same height. Note: When installed, the top of the fabric header will be even with the top of the brackets, not including the tab. The tab serves as a spacer to prevent the sheer from being mounted too closely to the ceiling. If desired, the tab may be broken off after bracket attachment. Spacer Blocks Spacer blocks can be used with outside mounts to project the installation bracket away from the mounting surface when additional clearance is needed (Fig. 15). Each spacer block adds 1 2" clearance. A maximum of three blocks may be used to gain a total of 1 1 2". INSTALLATION Extension Brackets Ceiling mount brackets are used with extension brackets to project installation brackets up to 3" from the mounting surface (Fig. 16). The tops of the extension brackets must be level and aligned at the same height. Before mounting the extension brackets, any unneeded length may be cut off along the indentations cast between each set of two holes. If possible, the screws provided to attach the ceiling mount brackets should be mounted pointing down for best appearance. Inside Mount and Ceiling Mount Applications To attach the ceiling mount brackets, the flat surface of the soffit must be at least 1" deep. To fully recess the sheer inside the opening, the flat surface must be at least 6 1 4" deep (Fig. 17). 1" MINIMUM INSIDE MOUNTING DEPTH 1" 6 1 /4" MINIMUM FULLY RECESSED DEPTH If the mounting surface is not level, shims must be used when attaching the ceiling mount brackets to ensure level mounting of the SofTrak rod. Fig. 17 Important: Before tightening the mounting screws, the front edges of the brackets must be aligned. This ensures secure installation and reliable operation. End Mount Applications End mounting (Fig. 18) is used when conventional mounting techniques will not work for example, in a window with an arch-shaped top. EXTENSION CEILING MOUNT Fig. 18 Extension brackets are mounted to the sides of the window opening, which must be at least 1 1 4" wide. Ceiling mount brackets are then attached to the extension brackets, and installation brackets are snapped into the ceiling mount brackets. If possible, the screws provided to attach the ceiling mount brackets to the extension brackets should be mounted pointing down for best appearance. Snapping Installation Brackets into Ceiling Mount Brackets Break off the small tab at the top of each installation bracket (Fig. 19a). Then fit the mounting holes on the installation bracket over the oval tabs on the ceiling mount bracket (Fig. 19b). While pushing the REMOVE TAB MOUNTING HOLES INSTALLATION END MOUNT 1 1 /4" MINIMUM BOTTOM TAB OVAL TABS CEILING MOUNT installation bracket onto the oval tabs, press down until the bracket snaps into the rectangular tabs at the bottom of the ceiling mount bracket (Fig. 19c). If removal is necessary, push up on the installation bracket to release it. Installing the SofTrak System Grooves on the back of the SofTrak rod are designed to snap into the installation brackets. The front of the rod (the side with the fabric carriers) is tilted up so that the top groove fits onto each installation bracket s locking tab (Fig. 20a). With the groove in place on all the brackets, the rod is tilted down to level it so that its bottom groove fits into the bottom tabs on the installation brackets (Fig. 20b). The rod is then locked in position by tightening the locking tab screw on the bottom of each bracket, just until it is snug. The recommended amount of clearance varies according to mounting style and application, as described below. Inside Mounts and Wall-to-Wall Outside Mounts The recommended clearance depends upon whether the end of the rod is active or passive. The fabric stacks at the active end. With a split stack design, both ends are active, and the minimum recommended clearance at each end is 1 4" (Fig. 21a). The SofTrak rod should be centered in the opening. With side stack designs, the rod should not be centered in the opening. More clearance is needed at the passive end to allow the swivel arm and end treatment to close around the passive end cap. A minimum clearance of 3 4" is recommended at the passive end. The minimum recommended clearance at the active end is still 1 4". See Fig. 21b and Fig. 21c for illustrations of right stack and left stack designs. Corner Windows and Bay Windows When attaching the installation or ceiling mount brackets for corner or bay window applications, be sure to allow for the clearances required between sheers. Refer to the measuring guidelines on pages LU-7 and LU-8. Remember that the clearances shown on those pages will increase if extension brackets or spacer blocks are used. The amount of the increase depends upon how far the brackets are projected from the mounting surface. Side-by-Side (Abutted) Installations For side-by-side installations, spacing between end caps should be 1 2" when two active end caps meet (Fig. 22a); 1" when an active and passive end cap meet (Fig. 22b); or 1 1 2" when two passive end caps meet (Fig. 22c). These spacings allow the clearance needed for proper swivel arm operation. Be sure to measure the spacing from end cap to end cap, not from the swivel arms. For best appearance, the sheers should be drawn open or closed the same distance on each side. In addition, the vanes should be rotated to the same direction at the same angle. LU-12

INSTALLATION For best closure, however, the vanes should be rotated in opposite directions (Fig. 23). This minimizes the light gap in the center. LIGHT GAP VANES ROTATED IN SAME DIRECTION LIGHT GAP MINIMIZED VANES ROTATED IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS Fig. 23 Simulated split stacks cannot operate, nor will they appear, exactly like a split stack design. Attaching the Fabric Panel(s) Remove the protective wrapping from the fabric but do not unroll it from the cardboard tube. Stand the tube on end on a clean surface with the header and the slotted vane openings at the top (Fig. 24). Position the tube on the end of the SofTrak system where the fabric stacks. If the tube is too long to be positioned vertically, trim the excess length with a sharp knife. TUBE FABRIC PANEL(S) Fig. 24 Use the wand to rotate the pinion clips about 90 from either of their extreme positions to the approximate midpoint position. Then pull the cord to move the fabric carriers to the full stackback position. Unroll the fabric to gain enough slack to attach the first vane to the first pinion clip. To attach the vanes, insert the slotted tab on the vane into the pinion clip until it snaps securely in place (Fig. 25). VANE PINION CLIP Fig. 25 INSTALLED VANE Unroll the fabric as you clip the rest of the vanes into the pinion clips in sequence. Be careful not to skip any pinion clips or vanes. Attaching the End Treatment Swivel Plates Remove the swivel plate from each fabric end treatment by separating the mating strips of Velcro. The swivel plates are right and left specific. Attach the end treatment swivel plate to the rivet connected to the swivel arm. On a side stack sheer, there is a swivel arm on the active end cap (Fig. 26a) and on the lead fabric carrier (Fig. 26b). On a split stack sheer, there is a swivel arm on both active end caps. Push up the rivet so that the clips on the end treatment swivel plate can snap onto it above and below the swivel arm, as shown. Fig. 26b RIVET SWIVEL ARM END TREATMENT SWIVEL PLATE SWIVEL ARM END TREATMENT SWIVEL PLATE RIVET Fig. 26a Attaching End Treatments to the Swivel Plates Hold the end treatment near the swivel plate at a height where the end vanes hang straight and the top of the end treatment is approximately 1 8" above the top of the swivel plate. Attach the end treatment to the swivel plate by pressing together the two strips of Velcro (Fig. 27). END TREATMENT Fig. 27 VELCRO END TREATMENT SWIVEL PLATE If an end treatment is not hanging straight or if the adjacent vanes are not uniform, simply separate the Velcro attachment and reposition the end treatment. Testing and Adjustment With the vanes open, traverse the fabric back and forth across the window or door opening. Then, with the opening fully covered, tilt the vanes to the left and right to observe their closure. Traversing and tilting should be smooth and easy, with no sticking or jamming. If there is a problem, first check that the mounting brackets are level and their front edges are aligned. If protruding window cranks obstruct movement, replace them with T-cranks. Complete testing, adjustment, and troubleshooting procedures are included with each order. LU-13

FOR YOUR INFORMATION CARE AND MAINTENANCE Luminette Privacy Sheers are as durable as they are beautiful. With proper installation and care, they will provide many years of beauty and performance. The sheer fabric and vane fabric are 100% polyester. They are resilient, anti-static and dust resistant. Periodic cleaning is recommended to help keep Luminette Privacy Sheers looking like new. The Basics For any type of cleaning, the sheer should remain hanging to minimize handling, wrinkling, or puckering. Disposable gloves should be worn. Routine Cleaning Regular light dusting with a feather duster is suggested. A hand-held vacuum with low suction may also be used. When vacuuming, avoid pulling or stretching the fabric. Starting in the upper corner, work across the sheer using short horizontal strokes, cleaning approximately the width of two or three vanes with each stroke. Do not use long horizontal strokes or vertical strokes. Rigorous vacuuming or using a brush attachment is not recommended, since either could distort the sheer fabric. Deep Cleaning Only professional detergentbased cleaning solutions should be used. Do not use dry cleaning solvents. For deep cleaning, professional in-home drapery cleaning services that use portable injection/extraction machines give the best results. While Hunter Douglas cannot attest to the quality of any equipment or procedure, we have seen favorable results using injection/ extraction-type equipment, which injects a heated cleaning solution into the fabric and extracts the dirty solution in the same motion. This reduces the contact time between the solution and the sheer, which prevents deep soaking and allows for drying within a few hours.* Preparation Traverse the sheer closed. Blow off any loose particles from the fabric. Vacuum with low suction or use a lint roller to remove pet hair or other types of debris that do not blow off. Hang plastic behind the sheer to protect the area. Cleaning the Vertical Vanes Clean vertical vanes from the back of the sheer. Set and maintain cleaning solution temperature just below the steam level. Rotate the vanes to the fully open position. Begin cleaning the vanes, working from the center out. Using a 3" upholstery tool, start at the top of the center vane and clean in a downward direction, one vane at a time. It does not matter which side of the vane is cleaned, as the injection/ extraction machine will clean both sides at the same time. Use your free hand to support each vane. Continue cleaning in this manner until you reach the end treatment. Then, repeat this procedure for the rest of the vanes. Cleaning the Face Fabric Clean the face fabric from the front of the sheer. Change to a drapery tool, or modify the suction area of the upholstery tool to 4". Set and maintain cleaning solution temperature just below the steam level. Close the vanes by rotating them in the direction you are working. For example, if you are working from left to right, close the vanes to the right. Starting in the upper corner, work across the sheer using short horizontal strokes, cleaning approximately the width of two to three vanes with each stroke. Do not use long horizontal strokes or vertical strokes, as these actions will crease the fabric. Steady the fabric with your free hand. Continue to the bottom of the sheer. If necessary after deep cleaning, remove wrinkles from the fabric according to the following instructions. Wrinkle and Crease Removal Both the hand and steaming methods described on the next page are suitable for wrinkle and crease removal. The hand method, however, is more appropriate for smaller areas. * While Hunter Douglas cannot attest to the quality of any equipment or procedure, we would like to acknowledge ON-SITE CORPORATION and On-Site Drapery Cleaning and More of Hayden Lake, Idaho (800-233-7452) for their efforts in establishing a deep cleaning procedure for Luminette Privacy Sheers. FOR YOUR INFORMATION Hand Method Rotate vanes to the open position. Apply warm distilled or bottled water to a clean white cloth. Support the fabric from behind using another clean cloth that is dry. Use a gentle, blotting action to apply the wet cloth to the wrinkle or crease on the sheer fabric. Let air dry. Steam Method Rotate vanes to the open position. From behind, direct the steam from a portable steam machine to penetrate the sheer fabric. Use slow, short vertical movements. Begin at the top of the sheer and work your way down. Several passes over the creased area may be needed. Let air dry. Spot Cleaning To reduce the potential for permanent staining, spots should be treated and cleaned as soon as possible with a clothing stain pre-treatment solution. Apply pre-treatment solution to a clean white cloth. Support the fabric from behind using another clean cloth that is dry. Clean the spot using a gentle blotting action. Avoid rubbing the fabric since any abrasive action may cause it to distort. Let area air dry. After area is dry, blot with distilled or bottled water applied to a clean white cloth to remove excess solution.
