Big Wheel Hog Feeders RLX-0543_K RO SERIES OUTDOOR/BULK FEEDER Assembly & Operating Instructions Osborne Big Wheel hog feeders are packaged carefully and compactly to ensure their safe arrival at minimum cost. Each part was quality inspected prior to shipment and each carton was carefully packed to ensure that all necessary parts were present for the assembly. UNPACKING Upon receiving your shipment, check the cartons for in transit handling damage. ALERT THE DELIVERING CARRIER IMMEDIATELY if damage is discovered. Continue unpacking only after the carrier has acknowledged the damage and potential loss of contents. NOTICE All loss or damage in transit is the responsibility of the delivering carrier, NOT OSBORNE INDUSTRIES. To protect your rights in the event of damage cordless drill 5/16-in. drill bit 1/2-in. socket wrench rubber mallet 1 3/8-in. hole saw or metal sheers Required Tools 1/4-in. drill bit 7/16-in. wrench 9/16-in. wrench or loss, sign the delivery waybill only after the carrier has acknowledged in writing that damage or loss has occurred. In the event that damage is revealed only after unpacking is complete, notify the delivering carrier immediately and request an inspection of the damaged merchandise before proceeding. pliers NOTE: Standard drill bits rapidly become dull when used on fiberglass. Masonry bits are recommended. Use thread-locker on all bolts. ASSEMBLY AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Install axle (Item 3) into center recess of trough (Item 2). Drill 1/4-in. holes through trough using axle as guide. Secure using four (4) 1/4 x 7/8- in. flat head machine screws, 3/8-in. flat washers, and 1/4-in. hex nuts (Items 21, 22, & 23). IF THE OPTIONAL SKID IS NOT USED, SKIP TO STEP 3. 2. Insert four (4) 3/8 x 8-in. carriage bolts (from skid bolt kit) in the predrilled holes of the skid assembly (Item 1) from the side opposite the tow hooks. Thread one (1) 3/8-in. hex nut (from skid bolt kit) on each bolt most of the way down. NOTE: Ensure there is no galvanizing residue on the bottom of axle before securing to trough. Axle should be straight and perpendicular to trough. 3. Slide the 2 1/2-in. feed wheel washer (Item 27) onto the axle followed by the feed wheel (Item 4). Ensure the feed wheel turns freely. Remove any excess galvanizing residue. Center the trough on the skid centered between the four hooks. 4. Force trough divider cage (Item 6) onto trough using rubber mallet. Ensure no gaps exist between cage and trough as fiberglass could break when bolts are installed in the next step. - PAGE 1 -

IF THE OPTIONAL SKID IS NOT USED, SKIP TO STEP 6. 5. Place trough assembly on skid, aligning skid attachment tubes over the 8-in. bolts. Fasten with four (4) 3/8-in. flat washers and 3/8-in. hex nuts (from skid bolt kit). Tighten the four (4) bottom nuts against the assembly. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN as damage to the fiberglass trough could occur. 6. Drill 5/16-in. holes through trough using the cage as a guide. Check that cage is down as far as possible before drilling each hole. Fasten cage to the trough with 5/16 x 7/8-in. bolts and 5/16-in. flange hex nuts (Items 28 & 29). DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN. 7. Slide hopper bottom (Item 7) inside cage as far as possible. Keep hopper bottom level with trough assembly. 8. Slide feed sweep (Item 8) onto axle assembly inside hopper bottom. If sweep arms do not touch the hopper bottom, remove it and turn it over. Raise feed sweep about 1/8-in. from hopper bottom and install two (2) 1/4 x 1/2-in. fine-thread bolts (Items 35) in the pre-drilled holes in the feed sweep. Rotate the wheel to ensure the sweep arms do not rub; adjust as necessary. 9. Place one (1) 5/16 x 3-in. bolt (Item 24) and 5/16-in. flat washer (Item 25) through pre-punched hole in axle. Secure using another 5/16-in. flat washer and 5/16-in. hex nut (Item 26). See Figure 1 on Page 5. 10. Slip axle cover assembly (Item 5) inside axle tube as far as possible. NOTE: This bolt will allow feeder to operate with minimal clearance between cone assembly (Item 9) and feed sweep, and acts as a safety stop during adjustment. - PAGE 2 -

11. Slide cone assembly (Item 9) over axle until spool settles between the fingers on the axle cover assembly. 12. Fasten hopper bottom to cage using four tie-downs (Item 30). Position each tie-down above a cage divider bar at 90 by skipping two divider bars between each. Hole in Hopper Bottom Secure with four (4) 1/4 x 1-in. bolts (Item 31) and 3/8-in. neoprenebacked washers (Item 32) inside hopper bottom, and 1/4-in. lock washers (Item 33) and 1/4-in. hex nuts (Item 34) on the outside. See Figure 2 on Page 5. Turn spool so the square tube in spool is in line with hole in hopper bottom. If the cone assembly cables are not of equal tension, remove cone assembly and adjust eye bolts beneath cone. IF NO METAL HOPPER CYLINDERS ARE USED, SKIP TO STEP 16. 13. 14. Locate two (2) cylinder halves (Items 13). With rolled edge up, slip smaller rolled edge into the wider and align the bolt holes. Use 1 3/8-in. hole saw or sheet metal sheers to create hole in one cylinder half. See Figure 3 Supplement for drilling guide. 15. Lift hopper cylinders onto hopper bottom. Align hole made in cylinder with hole in hopper bottom. Gradually work edge of cylinder over hopper bottom. Ensure hole in cylinder and hole in hopper bottom are aligned and push cylinder top down level until the first corrugation is just above hopper bottom. Insert one (1) 1/4 x 1/2-in. truss-head bolt (Item 37) in top hole through both halves with bolt head to the outside. Install 1/4-in. flange nut (Item 38) but do not tighten. Fasten second hole from bottom in a similar manner and repeat for the opposite side. LEAVE BOLTS AS LOOSE AS POSSIBLE. 16. Slide cone adjust bracket (Item 12) into hole as shown. Turn bracket so small attachment holes align with holes in sheet metal. Use a 1/4-in. drill bit to drill two (2) holes through the hopper bottom using the hopper top as a guide. Fasten with two 1/4 x 1-in. bolts and 1/4-in. hex flange nuts (Items 31 & 36). - PAGE 3 -

17. On the side opposite the cone adjust bracket, adjust hopper top (cylinder) so it is level with opposite side. The distance from the top of the hopper bottom to the top of the metal cylinder should be approximately 17 5/8-in. 18. Use a 1/4-in. bit to drill through hopper bottom using metal cylinder as a guide. Fasten with one (1) 1/4 x 1/2-in. truss-head bolt and 1/4-in. flange nut (Items 37 & 38). Keep bolt heads to outside. Repeat, moving diagonally, for remaining holes. 19. Slide cone adjust rod (Item 11) through cone adjust bracket until it contacts spool. Slide rod through spool as far as possible. Tighten all fasteners used in the previous steps until snug. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN. IF NO ADDITIONAL CYLINDER RINGS ARE USED, SKIP TO STEP 21. 20. Place plain crossbar (Item 16) on top metal cylinder parallel with the cone adjust rod. Align holes in left crossbar (Item 14) with plain crossbar and install 1/4 x 1-in. truss-head bolt (Item 39) from outside of feeder, through metal cylinder and then through crossbars. Loosely install 1/4-in. flange hex nut (Item 38). Hinge Tab on Top Install additional rings as previously described in Steps 13-15 & 18. Position each set of rings such that the seams are rotated 90 to the seams of the rings below. Use 1/4 x 1/2-in. truss-head machine screws and 1/4-in. flange nuts (Items 40 & 41). DO NOT TIGHTEN bolts until all cylinder halves are installed. Rotate the adjuster plate as needed to position the latch. Use the cone adjust handle (Item 10) to rotate the cone assembly up and down to check operation. Adjust as necessary. 21. Install remaining 1/4 x 1/2-in. truss-head bolts and 1/4-in. flange nuts (Items 37 & 38) in the vertical holes of the hopper top. 22. Plain Crossbar Left Crossbar - PAGE 6 - Install one (1) 3/8-in. flat washer (Item 52) on the end of the long rod of the hinge weldment (Item 17A) and insert the rod into the slotted hole in the hinge tab of the left crossbar installed in previous step. NOTE: If no lid is used, hinge weldment will not be available. Install only the crossbars.

23. Install one (1) 3/8-in. flat washer (Item 52) on the other end of the hinge weldment and insert the rod into the hinge tab of the right crossbar (Item 15) with hinge tab facing up. Position right crossbar between previously installed crossbars to form triangle. Fasten with two (2) 1/4 x 1-in. trusshead bolts (Item 39) and 1/4-in. flange hex nuts (Item 38). IF NO LID IS TO BE USED, SKIP TO STEP 29. 24. Bolt the hold-down bracket (Item 45), hopper lid hinge bracket (Item 46, ONE ONLY AT THIS TIME), and hopper lid stop (Item 47) to lid using 1/4 x 1/2-in bolts and 1/4-in. flange nuts (Items 43 & 44). See Figures 4, 5 & 6 on Page 5. NOTE: If no lid is used, hinge weldment will not be available. Install only the crossbars. Install 1/4 x 1/2-in. round-head bolt and 1/4-in. flange nut in the center hole of the lid. This bolt is used to simply cover hole in center of lid. Ensure heads of all bolts are installed to outside of lid. Tighten all fasteners used to install crossbars to securely capture hinge weldment until snug. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN. 25. Install 1/4 x 1 1/2-in. stud bolt (Item 51) using two (2) 1/4-in. flange nuts (Item 44) in hole of metal cylinder centered behind plain crossbar as shown. The thread-end of bolt goes to the inside of the feeder. 26. Lift the hinge weldment up. Install lid to hinge weldment with hold-down bracket (Item 45) at the top. Place one (1) 3/8-in. flat washer (Item 52) on free end of hinge weldment and then through the hopper lid hinge bracket. Install the second hinge bracket (Item 46) to the lid and insert hinge weldment. Hold-Down Bracket at Top Hopper Lid Stop While attaching lid to hinge weldment, ensure hopper lid stop catches top metal cylinder for easier installation. 27. Pull lid closed and ensure the stud bolt installed in Step 25 extends through the 1/2-in. flange hole in the lid at the rear. Adjust as necessary. 28. Insert L-bolt (Item 48) inside the hold-down bracket approximately 4 1/4in. from the top of the metal cylinder as shown. Mark the location and drill 1/4-in. hole through metal cylinder. Install L-bolt using two 1/4-in. hex-lock/nylon-insert nuts (Items 49) and 1/4 x 1 1/4-in. fender washers (Items 50). - PAGE 7 -

IF NO STEPS, HAND GRIPS OR LADDERS ARE TO BE USED, SKIP TO OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS BELOW. 29. Attach the inspection step (Item 18, if available) or ladder (Item 20, if available) to the feeder using 1/4 x 1-in. bolts and 1/4-in. nuts (Items 41 & 42). Install through any holes in metal cylinders. 30. Install the hand grip (Item 19, if available) above the step using the holes available on the metal cylinder at a seam. If holes are not available, use the bracket as a drill guide. Position the step or ladder so they can provide access to the direction the lid opens. Ensure the step or ladder does not interfere with the cone adjust assembly. Installation of ladders, steps, and hand grips are sometimes easier if feeder is laying on its side. USE CAUTION if laying feeder on its side. Fasten the hand grip using two (2) 1/4 x 1-in. bolts and 1/4-in. nuts (Items 41 & 42). OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS. READ CAREFULLY. ALWAYS POSITION FEEDER ON FLAT SURFACE. The feeder operates well on sloped floors, but the center axle must be supported by a firm, flat surface to prevent warpage of the fiberglass trough and binding of the feed wheel. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PIGS LESS THAN 50 LBS. OR FOR GESTATING SOWS. To start smaller pigs on the feeder, adjust cone to a height of approximately 3/4-in. to 1-in. above feed sweep. As pigs grow and learn to move the feed wheel, reduce cone height stepwise. DO NOT IMPACT FIBERGLASS. Do not drop the feeder or allow the fiberglass parts to impact hard objects. Fiberglass-reinforced plastic is very strong and durable, but it can shatter if impacted too hard. Move the feeder with care. Repair fiberglass parts with standard fiberglass repair kits. Osborne RTM-Glas fiberglass is not reduced by cold. CAUTION: Ensure steps, ladders and hand grips are installed securely. Always use inspection step or ladder. Beware of ice on step or ladder during winter. Do not inspect feeder from any unattached ladder, which could fall and cause serious injury. Big Wheel Feeders are designed for maximum strength and durability. Quick repair is sometimes necessary. Order replacement parts through your nearest Osborne dealer or through Osborne Customer Service. Additional accessories, such as skids, bump bars and fenceline adapters, are available from Osborne, ordered separately. P.O. Box 388 Osborne, KS 67473 U.S.A.
