Step 4 Latching the Universal Carrier With your Bumper Mounted Swing Away closed and latched to the bumper, hook the Universal Carrier latch to the top of the Vanagon rear hatch and close the latch. The rubber bumper should compress and provide a little resistance when closing the latch. This resistance and the location of the bumper can be adjusted slightly by bending the latch bracket up or down.
Step 5 Placing the Protective Film Note where the bumper contacts the top of the rear hatch. Place the adhesive backed clear protectant on the top of the rear hatch so that the rubber bumper contact surface is completely covered by the film. Step 6 Capping the Holes Place the 2 Square tubing plug in the top of the universal carrier. If the Ladder Rung Kit (sold separately) is not being used, plug the holes on the sides of the universal carrier with the 10 round plugs provided. Mounting the Accessories (Sold Separately) Step 1 Placing the Rungs Ladder Rung Kit Slide each rung through the holes on the side of the Universal Carrier and center them. Place the supplied end caps on each end of the rungs. Step 2 Securing the Rungs in Place Use the 8mm bolts, nuts and washers supplied with the Ladder Rung Kit to secure each rung as shown in the picture to the right. The bolt should be tightened against each rung and the nut should be used to lock the bolt in place by tightening the nut against the Universal Carrier using a 13mm open ended wrench.
Tire Mounting Assembly Use the U-bolts to position the backing plate vertically on the Universal Carrier so the bottom edge of the tire rests on the tower mounting plate. Use the carriage bolts to position the stud plate horizontally on the backing plate so the back edge of the tire rests on the tower upright. Secure wheel with the lug nuts. Spare Tire Carrier Rotopax Carrier Step 1 Clamping the Rotopax Carrier \ Use the 2.75 long stainless steel bolts and washers to sandwich the 2 square tubing of the universal carrier between the backing plate and the Rotopax carrier base.
